FATAL AVALANCHES fascinate us in some peculiar, primordial way. And, from the first winter after the gold rush of 1858 to as recently as this past winter, Colorado's mountains have often responded to this maniacal morbidity. John W. Jenkins caters to this curiosity with a book intended for easy reading. From the mining camps to the ski mountains, he scans 120 years and a cemetery full of white death. He had a good idea, and his prose is adequate. Ample footnotes suggest exhaustive research that would make this as carefully documented as a bank loan. However, I wouldn't bet my house on his history. Several of his stories are too good to be true. His Homestake Mine story is almost certainly bogus, and his story about Buck Rogers and a lost gold treasure from Red Cliff is highly unlikely. And there are more canards yet. These stories are almost certainly tall tales rather than fact. This was "taking" research, rather than "painstaking," and as the saying goes, "no pain, no gain." For better primary documentation and perhaps better writing, I'd suggest "Historic Avalanches in the Northern Front Range and the Central and Northern Mountains of Colorado," by M. Martinelli Jr. and Charles F. Leaf.

Tips for Ski Tours Peter Veider is the chief instructor of the Tyrolean Alpine Rescue Service and a certified skiing instructor and tour guide. He summarized the most important points to keep in mind for backcountry skiing.
In order to avoid dangerous mistakes, ask yourself the following questions before every backcountry tour:
  • Did you pack emergency supplies such as a first-aid kit?
  • Did you pack sun screen and lip balm with the appropriate
    UV-protection factor?
  • Did you pack sun glasses with a UV-A-B-C filter?
  • Did you check whether the avalanche beeper is sending and
    receiving correctly?
One more thing to keep in mind: Put band-aids on sensitive areas on your feet before every ski tour! You will avoid painful blisters that might be harmful to you on your ascents and descents. Avalanche Prevention If you plan your tour sensibly, you will protect yourself against avalanches. Familiarize yourself with the weather conditions, the avalanche situation, and the size of your group before every tour. Statistical data have shown that factors such as the incline and the position of the slope and not least the skiers themselves play key roles in triggering avalanche disasters. Don't needlessly risk your life! In case of doubt, avoid steep and shady slopes!

Search and Rescue Teams
There are search and rescue teams at almost all large ski resorts with potential avalanche hazards as well as larger organizations that are called upon in very large avalanche disasters or to remote areas. Although the people trained to do search and rescue are well qualified it should be stressed that the chance for survival of an avalanche victim is dependent on time, therefore avoiding disaster and/or knowing personal saftey tips to aid in the victims location will greatly reduce the risk of death. The victim has only a 50% chance of survival if uncovered within a half hour. With small, very mobile rescue teams this time constraint is not impossible to work under. If the victim has taken the neccessary precautions to aid rescuers in locating them they stand a much greater chance of survival. An organized rescue effort that takes the least amount of time must be prepared prior to the search. This is called an avalanche rescue plan and is required reading for all employees of ski resorts. These plans are updated every season and within the season if weather conditions change drastically. The rescue plan includes information on equipment, alarm sounding, and personnel in charge. There is a rescue leader who's responsibility it is to contact medical support, air support, law enforcment groups, and government officials for handling public-relations problems. Throughout the search and rescue the leader is usually stationed to a particular post, while others members of the team are actively looking for the victim within the avalanche area.

KATHMANDU, Nepal (Reuter) - A teenage boy given up for dead in an avalanche survived a 24-hour ordeal and was pulled from deep snow Sunday, safe except for frostbite, Nepali rescue officials said.
The rescue of 17-year-old Deepak Nepali against all the odds made the death toll in weekend avalanches in the Himalayan kingdom 42, down from an earlier announced 43.
A total of 17 foreigners are known to have died 13 Japanese trekkers killed by Saturday's avalanche and an Irish woman, two Canadians and a German buried in a landslide.
Rescuers Sunday helped some 115 foreign trekkers from a snow-ravaged valley near Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain.
``Some of the rescued were in shoulder-deep snow,'' said Bikash J.B. Rana, a Nepal Airways helicopter pilot who took part.
``Most are suffering from snow blindness, frostbite and hunger,'' Rana said. ``Many of them would have died had rescuers not reached them today.''
The avalanche in which the 13 Japanese died Saturday was also believed to have killed 13 Nepalis. But Deepak managed to survive by perching between two rocks in four-foot deep snow, rescue officials said.

The 1999 avalanche disasters in the villages of Galtür in Austria and near Chamonix in France were the result of truly exceptional snowfalls and weather conditions. Never in living memory have there been such tragic accidents and hopefully there never will be again. But these events should heighten awareness of the dangers of the mountains.
In normal circumstances, you should be safe in villages and on marked and open pistes in Europe and open areas within the ski area boundary in North America. But as soon as you venture outside these avalanche-controlled areas, the risks escalate.
The vast majority of avalanche victims are holiday skiers or riders who have gone off-piste. And, according to the Swiss Federal Institute of Snow and Avalanche Research, almost all fatal avalanches are set off by the victims themselves. Of the 600 cases it studied in a recent report, 80 per cent were set off by off-piste or cross-country skiers. Snowboarders and hikers accounted for the other 20 per cent.

When you here the word Landslide ! what do you think of? You say you think of a mass of snow, rocks, or wet mud sliding down from a high altitude triggered by a catalyst event? By golly, you're right!
Landslides occur along something called (are you ready?) a plane of structural weakness ! So what, you say? Well, that means that all this muck coming down the side of the mountain, heading straight for you and your dog and your little log shack, is following the path of least resistance. The plane of structural weakness ! is the term for a path, in the mountain, that is relatively free of debris and usually is between the two highest points of the mountain.
Some landslides are called mudflows , and, man, you would never saturation ). Mudflows are so strong sometimes that they carry enourmous boulders down the mountain. If the mudflow is really big, it can destroy nearby towns. I'm not kidding.
Some mudflows are active for years ! Isn't that amazing? It's all part of the really super cool way that Geology works: Volcanoes and converging plates push mountains up, and mudflows and rain tear them back down, bit by tiny bit, over thousands of years, until they are flat. Avalanche
An avalanche occurs when a mass of snow falls down a mountainside. That is because new snow (which is not wet) accumulates on a more heavy snow layer. Since the new snow layer is not compact, it could slide down toward the base of the mountain. Avalanches could be triggered by loud noise (yells, firearm shots, etc.). Skiers, snowboarders and climbers could also cause an avalanche. There are two ways to reduce avalanche risks: by installing snowsheds or by triggering controlled avalanches. These protection fences are made of rocks, soil and other materials. They prevent avalanches to fill trails used by humans. Controlled avalanches cause the accumulated snow to fall down before it could trigger avalanches by itself. When nobody is in danger, explosives are used to produce a loud noise that causes an avalanche.

    Avalanche, Rock Slide and Landslide
However, landslides can take other forms, namely rock slides and avalanches.
    Avalanche
Avalanches could be made of snow and rock debris. In both situations, avalanches usually cause a lot of damages. During a snowfall, the hard snow layer is covered with a new snow layer, less compact and heavy. This new layer is less stable than the first, and any loud sound or movement is enough to cause this layer to fall down the mountainside. That is why wilderness skiers sometimes trigger avalanches. To reduce avalanche risks, snowsheds are constructed where snow accumulates in mountains. Small avalanches are also triggered by firing shots in hazard areas. The sound produced by these shots triggers small avalanches, which prevent snow accumulation that could lead to bigger and more dangerous ones. For your own safety, you must never venture alone in the mountain during winter. It is better to look up the avalanche risks for the region. Finally, always stay in marked ski runs and, if possible, near the sides of these runs.
