North American History home James Howard "Dutch" Kindelberger
James Howard “Dutch” Kindelberger was born in Wheeling, W.V., on May 8, 1895, the son of steelworker Charles Frederick Kindelberger. Kindelberger started working in the steel industry with his father but, in 1916, when he was 21 years old, went to study at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The United States entered World War I in 1917, and Dutch Kindelberger joined the Army to serve in the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps. He was a pilot instructor based at Park Field in Memphis, Tenn. After the war, Kindelberger looked for work in aviation. In 1919, he married Thelma Knarr and, in 1920, became chief draftsman and assistant chief engineer with the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in Cleveland. Five years later, he joined Douglas Aircraft in California as chief engineer. Kindelberger remained with Douglas for nine years, leading development of the DC-1 and the DC-2. In 1934, Kindelberger became president and general manager of General Aviation, later renamed North American Aviation, Inc., and served as general manager until 1948, when he became chairman and chief executive officer. Under his guidance, North American Aviation broke technological barriers; produced propeller- and jet-powered fighters and bombers, military trainers, rocket engines, and rocket-powered aircraft; and began its role as the prime contractor for the country’s space program.

ne of France´s most famous aviators, Roland Garros was also a pioneer. Starting in 1911, just two years later, on September 23, 1913, he flew across the Mediterranean, from Saint-Raphael to Bizerte. He also set several world altitude records. From the beginning of the war he took part in aerial combat, and along with the engineer Saulnier, invented a method for firing a machine gun through the propeller. Captured by the Germans, he escaped and returned to the "Stork" squadron, later to be killed in a dogfight. Each year, the French Open is held in "Roland Garros Stadium", near the Porte d´Auteuil along the western edge of Paris. George Messier

graduate of the prestigious Arts et Manufactures engineering school, Louis Seguin was the great grand-nephew of the Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot-air balloon. He was also the grandson of Marc Seguin, a pioneer in flapping wing type aircraft, and inventor of the tubular boiler and suspension bridges. Louis Seguin and his brother Laurent were among the original aviation pioneers, adapting an industrial gas engine (the "Gnom") for use in aircraft. They developed the Gnôme Omega rotary engine, which enjoyed considerable success around the world through the middle of the first world war.

    Biographical Note
This collection consists of over 350 short biographies of early aviation's trailblazers written by Harold E. Morehouse (1894-1973). Conspicuous by its absence is a biography of the author, himself an innovator. Born in Michigan, Morehouse channelled a youthful fascination with flight into training in the field of mechanical engineering. He began work in 1915 for the Van Blerck Motor Company and assisted in their development of aircraft engines. In 1917, Morehouse was working as a layout draftsman on the Standard J-1 Training Airplane for the Dayton-Wright Aeroplane Company. However, this assignment was quickly superseded by his placement on a secret project, supervised by C.F. Kettering and Orville Wright. Its aim was the production of a self-flying aerial torpedo which has since become known as the Kettering Bug. Morehouse contributed to all phases of this project, including its design, engine development and flight testing. The armistice arrived before the actual deployment of the Bug; Morehouse was to spend the next few years in engine design and development. In 1925, Morehouse joined the Wright Aeronautical Corporation and both the Wright-Morehouse engine and the Wright-Whirlwind J-5 (a re-design of the J-4) were developed here under Morehouse. The latter engine was later to serve as the powerplant for the historic 1927 trans-Atlantic flight of the
