A Manx Aviation History
While the Wallaces and Gauntlets performed their routines over Ronaldsway, the future of the airfield was being determined far away in London, in the offices of the Air Ministry and the Admiralty. The latter, short of air stations was desperately searching for accommodation for the operational training of crews to fly the new Fairey Barracudas which were now entering large scale production. Approaches had been made by the Admiralty for the use of either Jurby or Andreas, but the R.A.F. refused to give up these stations Instead, Ronaldsway was chosen because of its ideal position close to the sea which was the concern of the Fleet Air Arm.
In early 1943 the Admiralty's Land Division intimated to the Manx authorities its intention of developing the Ronaldsway area into a major Royal Naval Station and the schedule they presented covered a massive 850 acres. Acting under the U K. Defence of the Realm Act, which was extended to cover the Isle of Man for the war period, His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Earl Granville, authorised orders of requisition to be served on the landowners. The entire Ronaldsway Estate would disappear together with the two neighbouring farms of Ballagilley and The Creggans. Ronaldsway Farm was bigger than the other two together and its 430 acres stretched from Santonburn to Langness. Mr. William T. Faragher was still the tenant farmer and in 1939 the Air Ministry had taken over the lease held by Isle of Man Air Services and added the corner field at the junction of the Balthane and Derbyhaven Roads, the farmer being compensated for loss of all the grazing rights.

Description
History
It was born of a critical national need to fly over the enemy submarines ravaging shipping lanes during World War II. First designated the HK-1 for the Howard Hughes and Henry Kaiser venture that responded to the government requirement, it was later called the H-4 Hercules. The Hughes Flying Boat was to be the biggest airplane ever built and probably the most prodigious aviation project of all time. Only the courage and solitary dedication of Howard Hughes and his small development group caused this project to advance what a disgruntled U.S Senator dubbed the "flying lumberyard" resulting in its historic flight in November 1947. Now commonly tagged the "Spruce Goose" the aircraft has endured to become a popular cultural artifact telling a remarkable story of sacrifice, determination, and technological development. The HK-1, still the biggest aircraft ever built, was decades ahead of its time in the early 1940s. It revolutionized jumbo flying bodies and large lift capability, shaping modern flight. Along the way, the Flying Boat development encountered and dealt with tremendous design and engineering problems, from the testing of new concepts for large-scale hulls and flying control surfaces, to the incorporation of complex power boost systems that gave the pilot the power of 100 men in controlling this Hercules.

The 160th received its baptism by fire during Operation URGENT FURY in Grenada. Despite flying against a heavily armed Cuban and Grenadan force, the Task Force was able to complete its mission. Since 1983, the unit has responded to numerous missions at the request of the National Command Authority. This includes the eminently successful MOUNT HOPE III Operation in June 1988, performed in the most demanding environmental flight conditions imaginable, clearly demonstrating the ability of man and machine to strike deep, accomplish the mission and return safely. Night Stalkers participated in Operations PRIME CHANCE conducting sustained operations and ably supported a joint military Task Force under extraordinarily difficult and hazardous conditions. Aircrews of the 160th habitually operated 30 feet above the water, at night, using night vision goggles and forward looking infrared devices. Operation PRIME CHANCE resulted in the first successful night combat engagement which neutralized an enemy threat while using Aviator Night Vision Goggles and Forward Looking Infrared Devices.

EARLY AVIATION BOOKS
Info about author
Svensk Flyghistorisk Bibliografi 1630-1899
Early Swedish aviation has, with some notable exceptions like Swedenborgs flying saucer from the beginning of the 18th century, attracted limited interest. This is somewhat surprising given the multitude of aeronautical experiments that took place in Sweden during the 19th century and before. The earliest roots of flight by man in the country can be traced back to the 1630-ies. The bibliography covers Swedish and foreign aviation, published in Sweden, for the years 1630 to 1899. Material was collected from a variety of different sources, amongst others a great number of newspapers. All entries are presented in Swedish and in English. Special sections deal with Swedish constructors and aeronauts, balloon voyages (more than 1000), military aviation, regulation of aviation, aviation patents. The bibliography contains a comprehensive list av aeronautical classics from France, Germany, England, Russia and the United States published during the period 1600 to 1899. Moscow 2002

  • The Rotary Engine.
(the engine propeller was attached to the crankcase, and the propeller, crankcase and cylinders rotated as one, while the crankshaft was stationary and fixed, being attached indirectly to the airframe.)
  • Radial Engine
(It had an odd number of cylinders disposed around a circular crankcase facing fore and aft, so that all the engines cylinders face the airstream.)
  • In-Line Engine
(This means that cylinders were in-line one behind the other and mounted on top of the crankcase.)
  • Flat Engine
(The engine is flat and the cylinders are horizontally opposed from each other with the crankcase in the center.
  • Vee-type Engine
(When viewed from the front there are two banks of cylinders: 8 cylinder engines usually had two banks of four cylinders separated by an angle of 90 degrees, while a twelve cylinder engine had two banks of six cylinders separated by an angle of 60 degrees.

Ultralight aviation is the new way of private flying in the world, and America continues to be the source for many innovative, creative and invaluable contributions to this exciting air sport. That is why USUA has been compiling a list of those who have flown ultralights and contributed in some additional way. This ledger will be eternally changing and increasing as many more individuals will eagerly devote personal contributions to American ultralight aviation. USUA recognized the need to begin such a list in the early 1990's. At that time USUA presented the early drafts of the Ultralight Hall of Celebrities to Directors, Regional Representatives and attending members during USUA Annual Meetings held at various locations around the United States. Each year more individuals were added until today when the

"¡Arriba! The History of Flight in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean" opens Aug. 31 at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum (Sixth Street and Independence Ave., SW). The exhibition, on display in the museum’s "Hall of Air Transportation," runs through Nov. 30. It chronicles the development of aviation in a challenging environment where men and women test the products of the industry to extremes. Featuring 35 rare photographs and eight detailed models, the exhibition takes its title from the Spanish word for "higher." Material in the show is arranged chronologically and reveals the little-known stories of the colorful individuals who gave flight to Latin America. Visitors will learn how "towering mountains, vast and impenetrable jungle reaches and ferocious weather made the development of aviation in Latin America both a necessity and a daunting challenge." "¡Arriba!" covers topics such as early aviation pioneers, women aviators, military aviation and the development of commercial aviation, and celebrates Latin America's courageous aviation heroes.

Thanks to a successful partnership among the National Aviation Museum, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa-Carleton and the Canada’s Digital Collections (CDC) program, the story of Canada’s first century of aviation is now available electronically to all Canadians. The organizations collaborated on a special project to digitize a portion of the museum’s extensive collection of archival aircraft photographs and create a unique Web site, Highlights in the History of Canadian Aviation. The project was made possible by the Canada’s Digital Collections program, funded by the Youth Employment Strategy. The program provides young people aged 15 to 30 with valuable multimedia experience as they convert significant Canadian content for display on the Information Highway. After successfully completing CDC’s competitive application process, the National Aviation Museum’s New Media Officer, André Mercier, received funding to hire a youth project team. The hiring was done in collaboration with the Youth Services Bureau, which provides counseling and employment services to low-income, high-need and high-risk youth. The museum provided the four-person team with the project theme and content as well as computer equipment and technical direction, while the Youth Services Bureau provided work stations and project supervision at its Orleans office in Ottawa’s east end.
