Theropithecus gelada
Graminivorous Adaptations of Theropithecus gelada
by
Leigh Simmons
The challenges presented by inaccessible food sources may have played a large role in the evolution of the primate brain. Solving the problem of removing small nuts from shells or capturing tiny insects requires animals to be ingenious in their feeding methods; they may begin to mentally map the location of the food if they cannot see it, or they may use tools to access their foods (A. Jolly 1985). Theropithecus gelada of Ethiopia occupy a graminivorous niche; they feed chiefly upon the greenest blades of grasses which they must carefully pluck using their long thumbs (Krentz 1993). It has been suggested that the gelada, with their highly-developed precision grip, resemble the early hominids, who were also small-object feeders (C. Jolly, in A. Jolly 1985). Theropithecus gelada have adapted to a graminivorous niche in several ways, and this specific niche occupation has various effects on the gelada’s behavior. If their preferred grass blades are not in good supply, the gelada will eat roots, bulbs, and rhizomes; this dietary flexibility is especially needed during the dry season. Morphological characteristics specialized to the graminivorous niche include dentition, thumb opposability, robusticity, a seated feeding position, and terrestriality. The gelada’s occupation of a graminivorous niche offers much protection on the Ethiopian savanna; no other primate shares the same feeding habits and schedule as the gelada.

Gelada Baboons Are Rare!
There are only 53 gelada baboons in American zoos, and three of those 53 live here at the Folsom Children's Zoo!
What Do Geladas eat?
These baboons are the world's only grazing primates. Unlike cows, they sit while they eat and carefully pull up grasses and plants that appeal to them. At the Zoo, they eat fruit, greens, seeds, and primate biscuits. Primate biscuits are a nutritious cookie made especially for apes and moneys who live in zoos.
How are these primates like us?
Geladas are the most dexterous of primates they use their thumbs as well as humans do! It is possible for them to pluck a grape off a stem and pop it into their mouths. They can also sort through grasses and choose a single blade.
Baboon Communication Gelada baboons have a unique way of communicating. They have a chest patch that turns from light pink to red when they become agitated. They also raise their eyebrows, turn their top lip inside out, show their teeth, and yawn broadly when they are trying to intimidate another animal. Taxonomy: What's the Gelada Baboon's "official" name?

[answer below] Aggression, Perfectionism and Narcissism As Mendelian Genetic Traits in Primates
Summary

We identify three traits that are transmitted in humans in a Mendelian fashion: Aggression (A), Perfectionism (P) and Narcissism (N). We believe that the genetic loci corresponding to these traits will soon be identified. Thus, DNA analyses in the near future will allow one to trace personality traits and even personality types in ancestral hominid lineages. In addition, we show that the traits A, P and N can be identified in non-human primates. The evolutionary implications of this theory are evident. NPA Theory of Discrete Character Traits Our interpretation of the three traits in humans is as follows: Aggression (A) Narcissism (N) Perfectionism (P) The trait of perfectionism is not a basic drive of ambition and is not associated with a rage reaction. Rather it is a mediator of the unbridled drives of aggression and/or narcissism. The stereotypic acts associated with the trait of perfectionism are obsessiveness, compulsiveness, repetition, and the maintenance of neatness, order and symmetry. It is concluded that certain autistic and schizophrenic individuals are those in whom the two components of ambition, i.e., aggression and narcissism, have been suppressed by genetic or environmental factors, either congenitally, in childhood, or after maturity, thus revealing in the individual a primitive state of perfectionism.

The Great Rift Valley Ethiopia, often misunderstood as a dry, barren country devoid of flora and fauna, is in fact a land that has much to offer. Some 25 million years ago, Mother Nature decided to split Ethiopia into two diagonal halves. This continental crack, which is visible even from space, is named the Great Rift Valley. Till today, activities and movements below the earth's surface are still evident from the presence of active volcanoes, steam vents and boiling hot springs in the Great Rift Valley.

Baboons The Baboon, Papio cyanocephalus , is a large terrestrial monkey with a somewhat dog-like head. There are 2 subspecies found in Kenya; the Yellow Baboon found in Eastern Kenya and the Olive Baboon found throughout the rest of the country. The 2 species can be told apart by build, the Yellow Baboon is slimmer and longer limbed, and by the presence of a mane (present in the Olive Baboon but absent in the Yellow). Transportation of primates I. Espie The transportation requirements of simian primates are sufficiently similar for them to be discussed as a group. The group includes the vervet monkey Cercopithecus aethiops , the samango monkey Cercopithecus mitis , the chacma baboon Papio ursinus , and the yellow baboon Papio cynocephalus . These are the simian primates occurring in the southern parts of Africa. The principles discussed can be applied to all small to medium-sized primates. Baboons and monkeys... •Are aggressive and strong, and are potentially dangerous. •Are intelligent and good at escaping. •When stressed, can inflict serious wounds on each other even if they appear to be compatible or belong in the same troop. Accommodation of primates I. Espie
Usually only institutions such as medical research facilities and recognized zoological gardens are legally allowed to house primates on a permanent basis. These institutions are subject to a very strict code of ethics. In the research situation the housing of primates is highly specialized and costly, and the design of the facilities is often determined by the protocol of the experimental work. Zoological gardens have other priorities, such as the visual attractiveness of the accommodation facilities and the provision of adequate space for normal behaviour and reproduction. People outside of the above institutions are occasionally obliged to accommodate wild primates for a short period. The following account assumes that this is done within the legal constraints of the country concerned, and attempts to indicate the parameters that should be considered in such an event. The decisions to be made regarding the design of accommodation facilities for primates must take the following criteria into account.

Questions on A105 Primate Lectures
Here are (partial) answers to some of the questions you had about lectures this week. Let me know by email what other questions you might have that would be of general interest, and I can add them to the list. Questions about sexual dimorphism: Q : How can monkeys be big if they have to be? Is diet the only influence? A : You inherit the potential to grow a certain body stature from your parents. You can achieve that potential only if you have good nutritional health when you are growing/maturing. When I talked about male baboons having larger stature than females, this is a trait that is inherited. That is, it is an example of an ADAPTATION... a physical trait, in this case, that had a selective advantage for individuals, allowing them to achieve greater reproductive success and pass that on to their offspring. What is different in this case is that male and female stature can DIFFER in some species if the selection pressures on males and females differ... some alternative explanations for sexual dimorphism are described in Lewin Chapter 13. Q : Why is it harder for males to mate with females if the species is dimorphic?

Your cards, letters and emails to officials in Kenya are helping end the exploitation and export of baboons in this country known for its majestic wildlife. In a related event, the Tanzanian government, prompted by the vigilance of animal rights activists from around the world, is launching an investigation into the primate trade in its country. Please write the Tanzania Embassy in the U.S. and the Tanzania Wildlife Division and ask for an immediate and permanent ban on the capture and export of primates - including baboons, vervets and patas monkeys - in Tanzania. These intelligent and social beings do not deserve the cruel fate of being torn from their families and sold to "research" facilities in the U.S. and abroad for inhumane, unsound, senseless experimentation.

Anthropologist Finds Another Link Between Humans And Other Primates
To learn how to eat, human infants rely on their parents to show them. Peeling a banana, for instance, is a skill usually acquired after parents demonstrate the technique. Most anthropologists have long thought only humans can donate information in this manner. Now, a new book written by Barbara King , assistant professor of anthropology, suggests human's primate cousins also have the capability. Titled The Information Continuum, King's study is based in part on more than 1,000 hours of data gathered during a 14- month field study of baboons in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. The anthropologist originally began her research to observe baboons' foraging habits. However, she soon became intrigued by the way the infants seemed to extract information from their mothers and other female relatives about how and what to eat. Closely observing two groups of 110 baboons which included 19 infants, King noticed the primates attentively observed what plants their mothers ate and also how they ate them. Often, the infants simultaneously ate the same food their mothers consumed. King recalled one rare, but dramatic instance, when an infant didn't follow an adult's lead and chose to eat a piece a bark, a substance that no baboon had ever consumed in King's presence. After eating it, the baboon soon became sick and vomited. Its mother, meanwhile, did nothing to help the child.

In their decades watching
the baboons of Kenya,
Jeanne and Stuart Altmann have discovered a rich social world where behavior and biology meet.
By Andrew Campbell STUART ALTMANN DIDN'T SEE what started the fight. But there it was, the male baboon, fearsome with his daggerlike canines, menacing a female half his size. The male chased the female around the savanna and up a nearby acacia tree, until she hung high up on branches barely able to support her weight. The attacker kept up his threats from a nearby limb while the other baboons in the group ignored the sceneall but one adult female, who ran to the tree's base and started screaming at the male. Why did this one animal come to the rescue? To Altmann, who with his wife and fellow researcher, Jeanne, PhD'79, has been studying the baboons of Kenya's Amboseli National Park since 1963, the answer was obvious: The female under attack was her daughter. He tells the story to show how even the baboons' most basic behaviors would be mystifying without being able to recognize individual animals and knowing which is related to which. Those methods, rare when the Altmanns first came to Kenya but now standard procedure in studies of wild primates, are typical of the many advances they've helped bring about. While the average primate study lasts, by one estimate, just 18 months, the Altmanns, through intense, long-term observation, have untangled the meaning of behaviors more complexand more variable among individualsthan brief studies could ever reveal.
