81. Your Child's Health/Family Life/Erasing The Back-to-School Blues
Plan a special backto-school dinner with your child’s help. Rise earlyand prepare a favorite breakfast on the first day of school.
http://www.yourchildshealth.com/family/blues.html
When the school year starts, your teen-ager might be worried about everything from math class to the latest fashions. Your fledgling first-grader, meanwhile, may be anxious about making friends and just finding the restroom. “There are several things parents can do to ease those first-day-of-school blues,” says Cherie Hughes, a clinical and consulting psychologist at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Whatever your child’s age, you can ease those first-day jitters by helping the student plan for a new school year. “You’ll reinforce the importance of school and make the worries of a new school year less traumatic,” Hughes says. But remember: The amount of help a student wants differs by age. An elementary-schooler needs plenty of help, while a middle-schooler expects a bit more freedom. An older student might not want Mom and Dad to make any fuss — but parents should find ways to stay involved because high school presents more choices. Here’s how you can prepare your child for a new year in the classroom: Two weeks before the school year begins, get your child back in the habit of going to bed, rising and eating meals at set times. All youngsters need time to adjust to school schedules after summer activities.

Back pain
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
January, 2003 Download this factsheet Back pain is an extremely common complaint –an estimated 60 to 80% of people in the UK are affected at some time in their lives. It’s also one of the main reasons for sickness absence. Each year, close to 120 million working days are lost due to back pain.
Acute and chronic back pain
Back pain can strike anyone at any age, although studies show people are most vulnerable between the ages of 45 and 59. If the pain lasts for less than three months, it is called acute back pain, where acute refers to the duration rather than the severity of the symptoms. If the problem goes on for longer, this is known as chronic back pain.
How the back works
The spine is made up of many small bones called vertebrae. These are separated by discs, which allow the spine to bend (see illustration below). This structure of vertebrae and discs is supported along its length by muscles and ligaments. The spinal cord threads through the centre of each vertebra, carrying nerves from the brain to the rest of the body.
The spine
Simple back pain
In 95% of cases of back pain, the cause is linked to the way the bones, ligaments and muscles of the back work together. It can come on suddenly but can also be due to strain over time rather than the result of overdoing it just once. Usually nothing abnormal shows up in tests such as X-rays, and generally nothing within the back is permanently damaged.

Exercise
Active therapies (exercises) are typically necessary to rehabilitate the spine and help alleviate pain. Importantly, a regular exercise routine provides patients with the means to help avoid recurrences of low back pain, and helps reduce severity and duration of potential future episodes of low back pain. Stretching
A hamstring stretching routine should include applying pressure to lengthen the hamstring muscle for 30-45 seconds at a time, one to two times each day. The pressure on the muscle should be applied evenly and bouncing should be avoided, since a bouncing motion will trigger a spasm response in the muscle being stretched. The hamstring muscle may be stretched in a number of different ways. Options for hamstring stretching, listed from most difficult to least difficult, include:

KidsHealth Kids Growing Up School Stuff
Oh no - it's school time again! Lots of kids feel nervous or even scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. You can beat the back-to-school blues by knowing what to expect. The First Day
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the cool stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. And of course, lots of teachers go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention to this part to find out whether you'll have to raise your hand to ask a question or if it's not OK to chew gum in class! Kids in older grades probably will know more people in their classes on the first day. But even if you've already met the kids sitting next to you, remember that it's a new year and that first impressions can last. Try to say hello to both kids you know and kids who are new in your class, and be friendly. Everyone's a little nervous or excited, so make the first move - you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friend! Fifth or sixth grade can signal a move to middle school or junior high, where you'll find lockers, homeroom (this is just what it sounds like - a classroom you'll go to each morning, kind of like your "home" in the school), and moving from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust.

88. Back & Neck Care Guide: Section 1
Detailed analysis of posture and the anatomy of the spine.
http://www.uiuc.edu/departments/mckinley/health-info/fitness/back/section1.html
SECTION 1 PREV: Introduction NEXT: Prevention of Problems with Proper Posture THE ANATOMY OF THE SPINE Vertebral Sections and Numbers The spinal column is made up of 33 segments, or vertebrae, held together by tough bands of tissue called ligaments. The nerve roots pass through the openings between the vertebrae. Thus, a failure of muscular support or injury may result in pressure or "pinching" upon a nerve, causing pain. There are five sections of the back. Seven cervical vertebrae (C-1 to C-7) comprise the bony axis of the neck. Although these are the smallest of the vertebrae, their bone tissue is denser than those in any other region of the vertebral column. The twelve thoracic vertebrae (T-1 to T-12) are larger than those in the cervical region. There are five lumbar vertebrae (L-1 to L-5) in the lower back area. Since the lumbar vertebrae must support more weight than the vertebrae above them, it is not surprising that these bones are larger and stronger than the thoracic and cervical vertebrae. The sacrum is a triangular structure, composed of five attached vertebrae, that forms the base of the vertebral column. The coccyx (tailbone) is the lowest part of the vertebral column and is composed of four attached vertebrae.

Ergonomics and back pain in the workplace
The goal of an ergonomics program in industry is to adapt the workplace to a specific worker, dependent on the job description, required tasks and physical make up of the employee performing those tasks. Two types of situations typically cause people to begin having back pain or to be injured on the job.
  • Non-accidental injury, where pain arises as a result of normal activities and requirements of the task. Poor body mechanics, prolonged activity and fatigue are major contributors to these injuries.

People who suffer from lower back pain are often encouraged to participate in their own recovery, but they are seldom given the knowledge and tools needed to accomplish this. This discussion will help you acquire a basic understanding of the reasons for lower back pain, and take charge of your own health by taking the appropriate steps to rehabilitate your back. Of course, getting better is only the beginning, since further episodes of back pain are quite common as time passes. Fortunately, you can improve your chances of avoiding recurrences by rehabilitating your back, whether you are experiencing your first bout with low back pain or have had extensive treatments or even surgery.

Input from rural practitioners suggested more research be conducted to identify health needs. Another point was establishment of a single, consistent office to work with for all of waiver requests, grant applications, and technical assistance. Several other recommendations also apply to rural communities:
