New Teacher SOS
We turned the tables and asked new middle grades teachers to describe their biggest problems after a few weeks on the job. Veteran teachers at our MiddleWeb Listserv offered suggestions. First-Year Teaching / Part One: A MiddleWeb Listserv conversation If anyone doubts the power of listserv conversation to support teachers and good teaching practice, they only need to read this string. This chat began when Phyllis wrote about her struggles as a first-year teacher. As the conversation progressed, the discussion turned to talk of self-videotaping as a method of improving one's practice. And a spinoff conversation took up the topic of teacher induction and mentoring programs. New teachers are always welcome at the listserv to ask for advice and share experiences.

Welcome to your one stop site for Back To School! Here you will find free printables, lessons, lists of great Back to School books, resources, and ideas galore! My goal for this Back to School Page is to create a resource that is extremely helpful to new teachers and first year teachers. I also would like this to be a place where veteran or somewhat experienced teachers (that's me - 4 years) can come to find fresh new ideas. Teachers are very generous people, they enjoy sharing their ideas and that is why you will find so much wonderful information here. Some of the things are my ideas, but the vast majority of the ideas come from teachers of various grades and places. I just stuck them on a pretty page and organized them so that we could refer back to them each year. Thank you to the wonderful teachers that have an idea or comment on one of these pages. Please send your ideas to smilecdg@mailexcite.com

On the board I write down the following items that I want the student to place on the card: Name, Address, Parents/Guardians first and last name(s), phone number, and book numbers. • I collect the cards, place them in my podium, and use them to randomly call on students. • When I send notices home or make contacts with parents or students, I place the date I sent it on the index card. • At the end of the year, I pull the cards out when students call off their book numbers. • Finally, I turned in a monthly report to my principal that listed student/parent contacts and the dates listed on the index cards made that report easy to compile.

KidsHealth Kids Growing Up School Stuff
Oh no - it's school time again! Lots of kids feel nervous or even scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. You can beat the back-to-school blues by knowing what to expect. The First Day
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the cool stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. And of course, lots of teachers go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention to this part to find out whether you'll have to raise your hand to ask a question or if it's not OK to chew gum in class! Kids in older grades probably will know more people in their classes on the first day. But even if you've already met the kids sitting next to you, remember that it's a new year and that first impressions can last. Try to say hello to both kids you know and kids who are new in your class, and be friendly. Everyone's a little nervous or excited, so make the first move - you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friend! Fifth or sixth grade can signal a move to middle school or junior high, where you'll find lockers, homeroom (this is just what it sounds like - a classroom you'll go to each morning, kind of like your "home" in the school), and moving from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you adjust.

20. ATS, March 2, 2001, Teachers Go Back To School In Search Of Better Way To Impart
teachers Go back to school in Search of Better Way to Impart Science. This justlooked like more fun than should be allowed at an academic institution.
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/ats/Mar2/mar2_02.html
Teachers Go Back to School in Search of Better Way to Impart Science This just looked like more fun than should be allowed at an academic institution. Gathered in a room in Building 1 on February 15 were seven adults spinning black-and-white tops on a long tabletop. Made of pencils inserted through patterned disks, the tops spun so quickly the patterns blurred, seemingly creating new images. The speed exceeded the brain's ability to register what the eyes were seeing, a basic lesson about human eyesight. The adults, all local grade-school teachers, already knew the lesson. But what they were learning was how to teach fundamental physiological concepts with a flair that kids would remember. The workshop was the third in a series of four offered at the school for science teachers. Organized by Marshall Katler, research specialist in the Department of Environmental Health, with assistance from faculty and staff, the workshops each focus on one topic and provide examples of how it can be demonstrated to kids. The first two workshops covered microorganisms and animals and plants respectively. The February workshop tackled the senses. The final workshop will be on the environment. In addition to the demonstrations, the teachers are given large packets of information about the topics, sample lesson plans, and websites from which more resources can be downloaded.
