History
B adminton probably originated in India as a grownup's version of a very old children's game known in England as battledore and shuttlecock, the battledore being a paddle and the shuttlecock a small feathered cork, now usually balled a "bird." Played for centuries by children in India, Siam, and Japan, this was a cooperative game in which the players worked together to keep the "bird" in the air for as long as possible. A net was added and the game had become a competitive sport called "poona" by the 1860s, when British Army officers were playing it in India. Some of them brought equipment back to England and introduced the new sport there during the early 1870s. It was played at a lawn party held by Duke of Beaufort at his country place, Badminton, in 1873, and it became known as "the Badminton game" among various guests who introduced it to other friends. The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules, which have remained essentially the same. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Badminton A guide to the Olympic sport of Badminton Courts have dimensions of 6.1m x 13.4m. The net is 1.55m high at the centre. Courts have a clearance on all sides of 2m and a ceiling height of 12m. Scoring matches are played to the best of three sets and sets are won by the first player (or pair) to reach 15 points. For women's singles it is 11 points. An exception arises when the score reaches 13-all or 14-all (or 9-all or 10-all in women's events), where the first player or players to reach the relevant score can choose to "set" or not "set" the game. If the game is "set", the score is called to love-all and the first player or players to reach the "set" score wins the game. At 9-all, the "set" score is 3 points; at 10-all the "set" score is 2 points; at 13-all the "set" score is 5 points; at 14-all the "set" score is 3 points. Only the serving side can score a point, so winning and keeping the right to serve is of fundamental importance in badminton. History Badminton was a demonstration sport for the Olympic Games in 1972, making its Olympic debut in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympic Games.

    A Brief History of Badminton
Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. A surprisingly long history for one of the Olympics newest sports! Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation.
The IBF was founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. The USA joined four years later. Membership grew steadily over the following years with a surge in new members after badminton's Olympic debut at Barcelona. As the sport's development program grows, the current 130 members is expected to increase further.
The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup (world men's team championships) in 1948. Since then, the number of world events has increased to seven, with the addition of the Uber Cup (ladies' team), World Championships, Sudirman Cup (mixed team), World Juniors, World Grand Prix Finals and the World Cup. The World Cup invitational event started in 1981 and is organized by the International Management Group (IMG). The World Cup series is due to end in 1997 and the IBF is considering organizing exhibition matches featuring the world's top players to replace the World Cup.

About the 6 Olympic Sports BADMINTON
USA Badminton is the National Governing Body for the sport of badminton in the United States. The National Office is located at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Badminton’s history goes back thousands of years and the sport appeared in the United States in the 1870’s. Badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992 at the Barcelona Summer Olympic Games and has been included in the Pan American Games since 1995. The mission of USA Badminton is: “to foster the growth of badminton in the United States of America and competitive excellence by US athletes in international and Olympic competition”.
USA Badminton’s long-term goal is clear. It must increase the number of Americans introduced to the sport and develop players through the highest levels competing in the international arena, which will allow it to draw from a larger pool of athletes for the Olympics, Pan American and World Championships. Badminton is one of the most played sports in the world, but it is currently not a large tournament sport in the US.

During world-class matches, the shuttlecock is belted back and forth over the net at speeds that would make even a touring car champion go weak at the knees. Speeds of up to 260 kilometres an hour have been recorded, making agility and super-quick reflexes essential. Badminton became an Olympic sport in Barcelona in 1992, and had an immediate impact, returning some of the highest global television ratings of any sport. The reason for this is simple - it is huge in Asia. This popularity is reflected in results. Asian nations took home 14 of the 15 badminton medals at the Atlanta Games.
