History
It is perhaps not surprising that the Asian nations are so fanatical about their badminton, given that at least one thread leading to the game’s origin began in China. The very earliest versions of the game involved kicking rather than hitting the shuttlecock. By the mid 19th century a game more closely resembling badminton — using rackets — had evolved in India. The English army took to the game in India, registering its rules in the late 1800s. The sport was brought to England by its colonial forces in India, and it was here that the sport was given the name it carries today. The Duke of Beauford introduced the game to English society at his estate — Badminton House — better known these days for annually hosting one of the most famous equestrian three-day events.

This document, produced by the IBF Marketing Department, gives a summary of the major broadcast details from the event.
Published November 2002 Guidelines on the use of "Marketing Rights" at IBF events
A Guide for bidders, Member Associations and Organising Committees
The handling of marketing rights to badminton events has become an increasingly complex area as the staging costs and financial commitments connected to these events have grown, and the sports rights management world has become more sophisticated as a result of changing technology within the TV broadcast, Internet and advertising world.
The document divides marketing rights into the four main areas of television, sponsorship and advertising, merchandising and the Internet. It takes the potential event organiser through the stages of identifying what rights and benefits are associated with an event, determining ownership, showing factors which affect value and giving advice on how to work with partners such as the "host TV production" company through sample contracts, etc.

"A Sport For Everyone"
Badminton is one of the few sports where men and women play together. It is a game for all ages and abilities, and although fitness is a key aspect for professional players, it is not a prerequisite for taking up the sport. It is a game that spans both the generation gap and gender issues, making it the ideal sport for families to play together. It can also be a wonderful way to meet new friends through local clubs and sports centres. It's a fantastic sport, why not give it a try - one billion people can't be wrong! For information on where you can play locally you should contact your national association. They can also help with information on coaching and physical training queries. Archer aiming for glory
Olympic gold is definitely on the agenda for British badminton star Simon Archer. The 27-year-old is not short of confidence as Sydney approaches, with hopes high in two events. His men's doubles pairing with Nathan Robertson - ranked sixth in the world - will be bidding to emulate their bronze medal success in the World Championship. But his best chance would appear to be in the mixed doubles, where he teams up with Jo Goode, a match that is ranked eight despite them winning the world silver medal. Simon Archer

"I'll be going into the men's doubles and the mixed doubles in the top eight seedings," said the right-hander. "Recently, I've just come back from a mixed doubles event in Indonesia, which we won. "The previous week, I was a finalist in Thailand and we beat all bar the Korean pair, who are the world number ones."

Badminton, game that somewhat resembles tennis and involves use of a net, lightweight rackets, and a shuttlecock, a cork ball fitted with stabilizing feathers. It is played by two or four players, either indoors or outdoors, on a marked-out area 44 ft (13.41 m) long by 17 ft (5.18 m) wide for the two-player game and 20 ft (6.10 m) wide for the four-player game. A net is fixed across the middle of the court, with the top edge of the net set to a height of 5 ft (1.52 m) from the ground at the center and 5 ft 1 in (1.55 m) at the posts. The players hit the shuttlecock back and forth over the net with the rackets. A point can be won only by the serving side. If the serving side fails to return the shuttlecock, it loses the serve; if the receiving side fails to return the shuttlecock, it loses the point and must receive again. A game is played to 15 points, except in women's singles, in which a game is played to 11 points. If the score is tied near the end of a game, the game may be decided through a tiebreaking procedure called setting, which involves different rules for men's and women's competition and depending on the point at which the score is tied. A badminton match consists of winning two out of three games. The governing body of the sport in the United States is the U.S. Badminton Association (USBA), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The international governing body is the International Badminton Federation (IBF), located in Cheltenham, England. Badminton world championships in men's and women's singles and doubles, and in mixed doubles (doubles teams composed of one man and one woman), were first held in 1977 in Malmö, Sweden. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, badminton was first contested as an official Olympic sport.

Badminton Brief
The Badminton Association of Western Australia Incorporated (BAWA Inc.) is the peak body for the sport of badminton in Western Australia. The BAWA Incorporated is affiliated with:
  • Badminton Australia
  • Western Australian Olympic Council
  • Australian Commonwealth Games Association (WA Division)
  • Western Australian Sport Federation
and his Excellency, the Governor of Western Australia is the chief patron.
Introduction
Badminton has a very proud history in Western Australia. The first club in Australia was established in 1900 at an Army Drill Hall in Fremantle and the sport quickly spread its influence to surrounding centres. In 1964 BAWA Headquarters was opened in Wembley. Western Australia is proud of its standing in Australian badminton. Many WA players have represented their State and their country with distinction over the decades. Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that in excess of 150,000 people regularly play badminton in Australia and of these, at least 18,000 play in WA. The sport caters for players of all ages and backgrounds and being an individual, pair, or team sport it does not put any barriers in the way to full participation by either sex. In Australia's polyglot society, badminton as a sport caters to a greater cross section of the community than many other sports, and both WA and national records of administration and competition demonstrate very clearly the equal participation of both sexes.

China's Long March Up the Olympic Medal Table
China's sporting dragon roared through the Sydney Olympics with a glut of gold medals, world records - and not the merest whiff of a drug scandal.
A glittering record haul of 28 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals swept the Chinese into third place in the overall medal table, their best finish in Olympic history.
"Our athletes showed China is a sports-loving country at the Sydney Olympics. We had hoped for 15 or 16 medals but we never dreamed of this," said China official Li Furong. "It is a great achievement and all our athletes should feel proud," he added. Importantly for Beijing's 2008 Olympic bid, China's athletes also left Sydney untainted by any of the drug scandals which dogged the 16-day sports extravaganza. China's gold medal rush was due in part by the introduction of women's weightlifting in the Olympics for the first time. All four of China's women lifters struck gold, Ding Meiyuan earning the accolade of "strongest woman in the world" with her victory in the super-heavyweight class.
