In the year 2000, Gao Ling and Zhang Jun, the Chinese top mixed doubles pair, rewrote history at the Sydney Olympic Games. As the seventh seeded pair, they first defeated the fourth-seeded pair from Denmark in the semi-finals, and were finally victorious over the top-seeded Indonesian pair, winning the gold medal. The victory was especially sweet for the Chinese team, because it was China’s best performance in this event since badminton was introduced into the Olympics in 1992. The victory was also a special reward for Gao Ling herself. In order to gain enough ranking points for the Olympics, Gao began to cooperate with Zhang Jun just a year and a half before the games. After playing under the shadow of world champion pair Ge Fei and Gu Jun for years, Gao Ling secured such a glorious victory for the first time at only 21 years of age.

Academy News : November 1998 New study reports asthma prevalence in 1996 U.S. Summer Olympic athletes At least one in six athletes representing the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta had a history of asthma, according to a study published today in the November issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Researchers at the University of Iowa and the U.S. Olympic Committee sought to examine how many athletes in the 1996 Olympic Games had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. To examine asthma prevalence, John Weiler, M.D., FAAAAI, University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, and his co-authors analyzed responses from an extensive, mandatory medical history questionnaire required of all U.S. athletes competing in the 1996 Olympic Games. The questionnaire was completed during team processing in Atlanta two weeks prior to participation in the Olympic Games and responses were reviewed with each athlete. The questionnaire, designed by the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division with input from Weiler and his colleagues, included specific questions regarding allergic and respiratory disorders. Although 4-7% of the general population is reported to have asthma, the number of athletes who reported asthma was considerably higher. Out of the 699 athletes who completed the questionnaire, 117 (16.7%) were found to have a history of asthma, use of asthma medications, or both. Seventy-three (10.4%) of the athletes had active asthma, based on their need for asthma medication at the time of the questionnaire or their need for medication on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.

Archer will take part in the men's and mixed doubles in Sydney and lasers will monitor the speed of his serves. The origins of the game were somewhat more sedate. Match play similar to that seen in the modern game was common in the 1870s but the game evolved from much older sports, those of Ti Jian Zi in China and its descendant, battledore and shuttlecock, which was played some 2,000 years ago by the ancient Greeks as well as in China, Japan and India. In Ti Jian Zi, players kicked the shuttlecock and there were no rackets. Around the time of Christ's birth, the battledore, an early form of the racket, appeared in China, Japan and Greece. Over the centuries, battledore and shuttlecock became a popular game, first among children and later among nobles and others in high society. In continental Europe, the game was referred to by its French name, "jeu de volant". By the mid-1800s a game known as poona had developed and would evolve into the modern game of badminton.

Brownielocks and The 3 Bears present Cartoon Fun and The Ancient History of Badminton Before Iran and Iraq were countries, the area was known as Babylonia. And this is where the game of badminton began. Although it technically wasn't a game for them. It was more like hocus-pocus fortune telling. The Babylonians were big on this sort of stuff, and would go to a priest (for a fee of course) to get their future told. The priest would do it in several ways: Dice, Cards, Tea Leaves, Bones, Dreams, and a few other gross ways I won't go into. But, another technique that the so-called future predicting priest used to foresee a person's future was a ceremony rather than a one-on-one personal reading. A crowd would form. Incense was lit. Drums were banged. Magical chants were sung. You in the mood yet? Should be. Out comes the priest, with two participants each holding a wooden paddle. Then the priest called for silence! A hush came over the crowd, and the two people with the paddles then batted a ball made of tightly wound wool yarn back and forth. The length of time they kept the ball in play was suppose to reveal how long they would live. Well, this worked for a while until the people finally caught on that they were not really discovering their future because in reality they really had control over it by keeping the ball in the air as long as they wanted and so they are the ones that really had influence over their futures, not the priests.
