Jack Be Nimble
Can a small Barbadian business leave home and succeed in a liberalised and competitive global economy?
According to Dereck Foster, chief executive officer and co-founder of Automotive Art, the answer is "Yes".
"You can if you believe you can, and if you have a very clear vision," he says. "But you must do your homework and have a business plan too, otherwise someone will eat your lunch. You also need to build a culture based on customer service and employee growth, and be prepared to change quickly when a new model for growth reveals itself."
Foster should know. He has followed his own advice, and his company has prospered.
In 12 years, this privately owned business has metamorphosed from a local automotive paint company into a highly successful retailer-through-franchise of automotive after-market products in 14 countries across the Caribbean.
From Guyana and Surinam in the South to Antigua in the North, from Barbados in the east to Grand Cayman in the west, Automotive Art franchises are offering to customers paint, tyres, rims, car batteries, tools, and other accessories and ancillary automotive products - over 10,000 items in all.
Last August, the company moved out of the Caribbean region for the first time. In a gutsy step it expanded into the United States of America by opening a distribution centre in Miami, Florida. The intention is to also open a store soon. In effect, Automotive Art will be testing itself in the most competitive consumer market in the world.

Air Jamaica Reports Recovery from September 11 and Begins a Tobago and Guyana Campaign
In the wake of the terrible attacks on America and the resulting fallout in world travel, a Caribbean airline says business has been better than originally anticipated. Air Jamaica marketing executive Allen Chastanet said he believes the carrier will exceed budget for both January and February this year, while advance bookings for March, April, May and June look extremely promising. "The critical question is when do we stop the level of discounting that we are having to do in order to resuscitate this business." Chairman of Air Jamaica, Dr. Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, speaking to travel agents and industry partners in New Jersey last week, said: "Mr. Bin Laden messed up Air Jamaica much less than most people were affected and we never did fall below a 50 percent load factor (after the terrorist attacks)." Chastanet, who is the airline’s senior vice president of marketing and sales, noted that several routes were recovering nicely due to a release of "pent up demand" and people were resuming their travel plans despite the recent warm weather in the United States. In particular, loads to the Dutch island of Curaçao from Montego Bay have been steady while business to Barbados is on the increase. Air Jamaica serves Barbados with non-stop flights from New York and via the Montego Bay hub in Jamaica.

Cactus pereskia L.

A climbing, leafy cactus, the Barbados gooseberry, Pereskia aculeata Mill., (syn. P. pereskia Karst.; Cactus pereskia grosellero or ramo de novia in Cuba; buganvilla blanca in Chiapas, Mexico; guamacho in Venezuela; ora-pro-nobis (pray for us) in Brazil; bladappel in Surinam. The generic name is sometimes spelled Peireskia, especially in Europe, for it was adopted in honor of Nicholas Peiresk, a senator of Aix in Provence, France, and a patron of botany. Fig. 97: A leafy, spiny, climbing shrub, the Barbados gooseberry (Pereskia aculeata) is an atypical cactus. Fig. 98: The pecular yellow or reddish fruits of the Barbados gooseberry bear recurved, leafy sepals until fully ripe. Description Origin and Distribution Varieties There are 2 cultivars in the ornamental-plant trade: 'Godseffiana' 'Rubescens' Climate Propagation The plant is easily grown from seeds or cuttings of half-ripe wood. Culture Flourishing with little or no care, the plant is drought-tolerant and suffers from over-watering. In greenhouse experiments, it has been found highly responsive to light. Under high light intensity, it can be kept erect and compact; under low light, it grows higher, with ascending stems and the leaves are larger and thinner.

The Bahamas are a collection of almost 700 islands and 2,000 islets. As one of the premier tourist destinations in the world, the Bahamas have fabulous beaches, casino gambling and hundreds of secluded vacation hideaways . The capital city is Nassau, the currency is the Bahamian Dollar and the official language is English. Population exceeds 284,000. August (2002) was a pivotal month for Bahamians who celebrated their emancipation from slavery on two different dates, in two different locations. You’ll learn why August is a special time of the year that reverberates throughout this little island. Politically speaking, The Commonwealth of The Bahamas may have only been independent for 27 years, but downtown Nassau is steeped in a cultural, as well as a political, history that goes back hundreds of years. See things to do in the Bahamas. First, take a peek at the entrance to the British Colonial Hilton. The dramatic statue guarding its location on Number One Bay Street is that of Woodes Rogers, the first Governor of The Bahamas. He was brought to The Bahamas for one reason: to get rid of the pirates and smugglers on the high seas around the island, to make it safe for the 17th century version of international investors. His mantra became the Bahamas first motto: “Pirates Expelled, Commerce Restored.” In this 21st century, the location now serves as the site of the Bahamas‚ International Stock Exchange. And Woodes Rogers Wharf has become the gateway to the largest cruise ships in the world.
