    http://www.caricom.org/history.htm
THE HISTORY OF CARICOM T he establishment of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) was the result of a 15-year effort to fulfil the hope of regional integration which was born with the establishment of the British West Indies Federation in 1958. It was a Federal Government drawn from 10 member islands. Although a plan for a Customs Union was drawn up, emphasis was not placed on economic aspects of Federation during the four years of its existence. Economically the Region remained as it had been for centuries and not even Free Trade was introduced between the Member Countries during this period. The West Indies Federation came to an end in 1962 but its end, in many ways must be regarded as the real beginning of what is now the Caribbean Community. T he end of the Federation meant the beginning of more serious efforts on the part of the political leaders in the Caribbean to strengthen the ties between the islands and mainland by providing for the continuance and strengthening of the areas of cooperation that existed during the Federation. To this end in mid-1962 a Common Services Conference was called to take decisions on these services, the major ones among them being the University of the West Indies (UWI), founded in 1948 and the Regional Shipping Services set up during the Federation to control the operation of the two ships donated in 1962 by the government of Canada - the Federal Palm and the Federal Maple.

BARBADOS > HISTORY None of the original Arawaks who lived in Barbados have remained. It is believed that these Arawaks inhabited Barbados around 600BC but were driven out by Caribs who themselves did not settle in Barbados. Barbados was known to the Europeans since the sixteenth century. However, it was not until 1627 that a formal colony was established by a group of Englishmen who planted tobacco and cotton for export to England. After 1645 these crops were replaced by sugar which fostered the development of the plantation system. In the one hundred and fifty-four years since the abolition of slavery, in 1834, the descendants of the African slaves who were imported into the island to underpin the plantation system grew into a thriving and industrious population which has contributed greatly to the economic and political development of Barbados, largely from a monoculture dependency on sugar to a more diversified economy which now includes a large tourist industry, manufacturing, financial and other services. In 1966 after almost 350 years of unbroken British colonial status, Barbados became a fully independent sovereign nation. The country has continued since that time to display the same social, economic and political stability as had been a feature of its colonial past.

    PREAMBLE:
The Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) is the executive arm of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); it simultaneously serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization.
    ORIGIN:
In 1949, the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the World Health Organization agreed that the Pan American Sanitary Bureau would serve as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas. In 1950, the Pan American Sanitary Organization was recognized as a fully autonomous and specialized inter-American organization. Thus, the Organization became a component of both the United Nations and the inter-American systems. The XV Pan American Sanitary Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1958) changed the name of the Pan American Sanitary Organization to the Pan American Health Organization. The name of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau remained unchanged.
    FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSES:
The fundamental purposes of the Pan American Health Organization are to promote and coordinate the efforts of the countries of the Region of the Americas to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of their people.

History The original inhabitants of Barbados were Arawak Indians, who were driven off the island around 1200 AD by invading Carib Indians from Venezuela. The Caribs themselves abandoned Barbados around the time the first Europeans sailed into the region. Although the conditions of the Carib departure are unclear, some historians believe the Spanish might have landed on Barbados in the early 1500s and taken some of the Caribs as slaves, prompting the rest of the tribe to flee to neighboring islands. Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos stopped on Barbados in 1536 en route to Brazil. Though he had no interest in settling the island, it's thought that he introduced pigs to Barbados with the intention of using them as a food source on return voyages. It was Campos who named the island
