Barns and Redundant Farm Buildings
With changes in farming practices, and in economic conditions. many traditional farm buildings have become redundant. They can be in timber-frame, stone or brick and in many forms and sizes, from single barns to complete farm layouts. Recent amateur conversions have caused the introduction of very restrictive Planning legislation. Nevertheless, it is still possible to devise practical and imaginative conversion schemes on which to negotiate approvals. Apart from legislative constraints, old buildings often have a unique personality which can be adapted to form new character. Care and ingenuity can make use of many existing features and often retain most of the existing openings. Walls and roofs can be lined to give good standards of insulation, and as many modern amenities can he introduced as may he wanted. The cost of conversion is less than building new, and there is the opportunity to create something new yet old. individual and special. Various design guides have been published, but there is no substitute for a real Architect working on an actual building, devising real and appropriate solutions in collaboration with a caring owner.

Old Barn Owner
Having just purchased an old barn, I found precious few resources to assist in gleaning a history. Visser's book was concise, informative, and a pleasure to read. It provides valuable insight to the development of agricultural styles, and valuable clues to dating the agrarian landscape. Excellent source.
Excellent as a reference work or as a handy field guide.

Help Save Historic New Hampshire Agricultural Buildings A new state law, RSA 79-D , creates a mechanism to encourage the preservation of historic New Hampshire barns and other agricultural buildings by authorizing municipalities to grant property tax relief to barn owners who (a) can demonstrate the public benefit of preserving their barns or other historic farm buildings, and (b) agree to maintain their structures throughout a minimum 10-year preservation easement. The Purpose The new law is based on the widespread recognition that many of the state's old barns and other farm outbuildings are important local scenic landmarks and help tell the story of New Hampshire's agricultural heritage. Yet many of these historic structures are being demolished or not repaired because of the adverse impact of property taxes. RSA 79-D encourages barn owners to maintain and repair their buildings by granting them specific tax relief and assuring them that assessments will not be increased as a result of new repair work. The Mechanism The program represents a uniquely New Hampshire approach; it is strictly voluntary on the part of the property owner and combines

Field Guide to New England Barns and Farm Buildings
Visser, Thomas Durant
A generously illustrated handbook for identifying and understanding structures that symbolize the region's unique cultural and historical landscape.
The quintessential New England barn photogenic, full of character, and framed by flaming autumn foliage is an endangered species. Of some 30,000 barns in Vermont alone, nearly a thousand a year are lost to fire, collapse, or bulldozers. Thomas Durant Visser's field guide to the barns, silos, sugar houses, granaries, tobacco barns, and potato houses of New England is an attempt to document not just their structure but their traditions and innovations before the surviving architectural evidence of this rich rural heritage is lost forever.
A recognized authority on historic barn preservation, Visser has combed the six-state region for representative barns and outbuildings, and 200 of his photographs are reproduced here. The text, which includes accounts from 18th- and 19th-century observers, describes key architectural characteristics, historic uses, and geographic distribution as well as specific features like timbers and frames, sheathings, doors, and cupolas. From English barns to bank barns, from ice houses to outhouses, these irreplaceable assets, Visser writes, "linger as vulnerable survivors of the past. Yet before these buildings vanish, each has a story to tell." Travelers, residents, and scholars alike will find Visser's text invaluable in uncovering, understanding, and appreciating the stories inherent in these dwindling cultural artifacts.

Maine Preservation's 2002 Annual Conference Maine's first-time ever barn preservation conference was held on September 28th at the Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta. It brought together a wide variety of interests and answers to help preserve one of our state's most threatened historic resources. Featured speakers from across Maine and northern New England included keynote presenter Thomas Visser, Director, Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, University of Vermont and recent author of Field Guide to New England Barns and Farm Buildings. Conference attendees learned how to maintain and restore timber and common frame barns; discovered tax incentives, easements and funding opportunities through the Barn Preservation Grant Program; heard case studies about barn rescues and adaptive use successes; and also learned to appreciate the cultural, scenic and economic values of historic barns and their immeasurable contribution to our rural heritage. On Sunday, September 28th, many attendees took advantage of our self-guided driving tour, and explored

http://fabe.osu.edu/Background.htm
Background
Ohio's agricultural heritage has left us with great abundance and a wonderful diversity in farmsteads, barns and outbuildings. From the modest hill farms of southeastern Ohio, to the massive row crop farms of western and northwestern Ohio, the Buckeye State ranks among the top agricultural producers in the nation. Indeed, agriculture remains the state's number one industry. However, farm consolidations, changing technologies and shifts in agricultural practices have resulted in the abandonment or underutilization of barns and other farm related structures.
A growing number of Ohioans, including farmers and rural property owners, are increasingly concerned about the loss of our farm heritage, especially the disappearance of barns and older farm buildings. Interests in rehabilitating, converting, and preserving existing farm buildings to meet today's farm demands is growing across the state. In 1997 a traveling Smithsonian exhibit on the BARN AGAIN! Program will be coming to several locations in Ohio. Still, despite this growing interest, farmers and concerned citizens have found it difficult to obtain guidance and the technical information needed to rehabilitate and reutilize older farm buildings and rural structures. PROGRAM PROPOSAL FORMAT Since 1979, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office has sponsored their popular Building Doctor Clinics. Each year a series of lectures and site visits are held in communities where there is an expressed interest in and need for preserving historic buildings. These clinics are frequently held in larger communities and, as a result, typically do not reach agricultural and rural audiences. These clinics will serve as models for the Barn Rehabilitation and Revitalization Workshops

The Basics of Safety
FARM AND COUNTRY SAFETY Agriculture ranks third among all major industries in accidental deaths. The restricted availability of rural emergency medical service creates an acute need for rural residents to understand the hazards they face and the first-aid measures to deal with them. On farms, ever-present fire hazards and delays in the arrival of firefighting equipment give fire prevention special importance. Follow the fire safety rules at the beginning of this section and comply with these precautions.
  • Store all flammable liquids, including sprays and fuel, in adequately ventilated areas away from direct heat and inaccessible to children.
  • Don't leave nearly empty gasoline or other fuel containers lying about.
  • Don't store fuel, oil-soaked rags, and other highly flammable items in hay barns or other buildings that burn easily.
  • Enforce "No Smoking" rules in all potentially dangerous areas, including barns, grain sheds, silos, and fuel-storage areas.
  • Keep fire extinguishers in all potentially hazardous areas, including barns and storage areas.
  • Drill all family members and farm workers in escaping fires and in locating and operating fire extinguishers.

The landscape was as important in defining the physical character of the Amana Colonies as the distinctive and simple building style. The dominant character of the landscape has always been agriculture. Dependent on agriculture for their existence, the Amana Colony Inspirationists chose their Iowa site for its fertile soil as well as its sources of water and building supplies. The seven Amana villages were organized as agricultural villages. Indeed, Article III of the Amana Society, written soon after they arrived in Iowa, stated "Agriculture and the raising of cattle and other domestic animals, in connection with some manufacturing and trades, shall under the blessing of God form the means of sustenance for this Society." High Amana Farm Complex
Photograph by Shannon Bell Dominating the landscape of the Amana Colonies, the farm complex sat clustered at the edge of each village. High Amana, like the other Amana villages, was equipped with a complete farm complex, allowing the village to be nearly self-sufficient. Each farm complex consisted of several barns. Essential to each village were an Ochsenstall (ox barn), Gaustall (horse barn), Füllerstall (colt barn), Kuhstall (cow barn), and a Saustall (hog barn). A variety of shapes and massing exist among the Amana Colony barns due to the addition of lean-tos and other structures which were added to the original barns to accommodate the growing needs of the community. Completing the farm complex were machine sheds, corn cribs, buggy sheds, granaries, and other farm buildings.
