History
Baseball was an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games seven times between 1912 and 1988. It became a medal sport in 1992 in Barcelona, and to date both gold medals have been won by the Cubans. Of course, the United States is baseball’s major power. The US has given the game its biggest, most colourful and most successful figures. Babe Ruth, Joe Di Maggio, Jackie Robinson, Pete Rose — champions, all of them. In the United States baseball is more than a game — it is part of the culture, collective psyche and inextricably tied up with American pie. From little league to Yankee Stadium, America is obsessed with baseball. But its chances at Olympic level have been hamstrung by a ban on professional players.

he first international Baseball event took place at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, USA, which included some exhibition games. The experience was a success and was repeated at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, SWE.
L eslie Mann, a popular ex-professional player from the USA, led the promotion of Baseball in his country with the founding of the National Baseball Congress (NBC) in 1931. The NBC took the first steps towards recognizing Baseball as an Olympic sport.
I n 1935 Takiso Matsumoto, professor at Meji University in Japan, invited an American team selected by a committee composed of Leslie Mann, Avery Brundage, Lyman Bingham and Judge Mederick Horfman. This was an historic event because for the first time, a Baseball game was broadcasted by radio from one continent to another.

O ctober 13, 1986 witnessed a defining moment in the development of international Baseball. At the International Olympic Committee Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, Baseball was included in the official program of the Olympic Games. Four days later, the city of Barcelona, ESP, was designated the 1992 host city for the 25th Olympiad, where the first official Olympic Baseball Gold Medal would be played. This was the culmination of a long, hard road and the reward for the tremendous, generous efforts of many people from different origins and nationalities all with one common goal: to make Baseball an Olympic sport.
I n 1988, the Baseball World Cup was held once again in Italy and the IBA Congress re-elected Robert E. Smith as President. Cuba won the Cup and in September of that same year, the United States won the last Olympic demonstration tournament at the Seoul Games.

History of Australian Baseball AUSTRALIA'S FIRST TASTE OF BASEBALL Australians first saw the game in 1856 when American goldminers at Ballarat, Victoria, played on their rest days. There was little local interest until around 1885, when a few matches were played in Melbourne. Enthusiasm strengthened in 1888 when American sports-equipment manufacturer A.G Spalding Esq. decided to upstage hockey and attempt to establish baseball throughout Australia. FIRST OVERSEAS TEAMS IN AUSTRALIA Between the 15 December 1888 and 5 January 1889, A.G, Spalding brought two teams, an All American and his side from Chicago. The Australian public viewed the matches in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and then Ballarat before heading of to India. The first game was played in Sydney on the ground of the Sydney Cricket Association. The game was in front of 4,000 people and the Australians lead the the 1-0 until the All American side tied the game in the 5th inning. It wasn't until the 9th inning where the All American side took out the game 2-1. The Americans were compelled to admit that whatever other respects the colonies might be inferior to the United States, they (Aussies) certainly possessed playing grounds so far superior in point of equipment and condition than they had in the US at the time. And there was no reason what so ever for comparison.

    http://www.decathlonusa.org/history.html
Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.
