CINCINNATI Tim Raines won't be on the U.S. Olympic baseball team, leaving it to minor leaguers to try to win a medal in Sydney next month. Raines, the last former major league player still under consideration for the team, has been rejected by the selection committee. The roster will be announced later this week. Raines, who turns 41 on Sept. 16, has been playing in the independent Atlantic League as a way of getting back into shape and auditioning for the team. "We appreciate Tim's desire and effort," selection committee member Bob Watson said Monday. "He sacrificed both physically and mentally to try to make this squad. It just didn't pan out, but we do thank him for that."

Dave Nilsson will call pitches for Australia. Omar Linares will try to hit homers for Cuba. A handful of familiar names will be in Sydney next month, filling out Olympic baseball rosters previously stocked with amateurs only. Team USA decided to take a pass on retired ex-Yankee Tim Raines. (AP) It's a step forward and a small one at that. There's no Big Mac, Slammin' Sammy or Junior. They'll be finishing off the major league season back in the United States instead of representing their homelands. All-Star catcher Atsuya Furuta won't be there, either. He'll stay in Japan, playing for a Yakult Swallows team more interested in the playoffs than a gold medal.

Thompson reached the wall a split-second before Torres to win a stirring 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. trials Thursday night. But Torres was a winner, too, becoming the first American swimmer to qualify for four Olympics. "This is a pretty sweet victory," Thompson said. "There's a lot of pressure. People think this just comes to me, but it's not as easy as one might think." Thompson, a five-time gold medalist, shook off memories of a poor performance at the 1996 trials to earn her third trip to the Olympics in 57.78 seconds. Torres, swimming right beside Thompson, was virtually stroke-for-stroke over the final 25 meters, falling just short in 57.86. The 33-year-old Torres, who returned to swimming last year after a seven-year retirement spent dabbling in modeling and infomercial work, held a slight lead in the women's race at the turn. Thompson caught up on the return trip and barely touched first.

On May 28 and 29, 1851, the Ohio Woman's Rights Convention met in Akron . Mrs. Frances D. Gage, convention president, began the proceedings with a stirring call to arms: Are not the natural wants and emotions of humanity...shared equally by both sexes? Does man hunger and thirst, suffer cold and heat more than woman? Does he love and hate, hope and fear, joy and sorrow more than woman? Does his heart thrill with a deeper pleasure in doing good? Can his soul writhe in more bitter agony under the consciousness of evil or wrong? Is the sunshine more glorious, the air more quiet, the sounds of harmony more soothing, the perfume of flowers more exquisite, or forms of beauty more soul-satisfying to his senses than to hers. To all these interrogatories every one will answer, No! "Opening Address," The Proceedings of the Woman's Rights Convention, held at Akron, Ohio, May 28 and 29, 1851 , published 1851.

The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling. The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.
