Patriot Basketball Scholarship Organization (PBSO) assists in subsidizing full athletic scholarships for CFCC student/basketball players, with the specific goal to construct a nationally prominent academic/basketball program for CFCC and Marion, Citrus and Levy counties.
In the last eleven years, the program has won five Mid-Florida Conference championships, one North Florida Conference championship, participated in six National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) state tournaments, participated in the 1996 National Tournament, placing 8th, secured a Top 20 national rating for the first time in the school's history, and placed players in top Division I collegiate programs throughout the country. The Meal Sponsorship Club
One arm of the PBSO is the Meal Sponsorship Club in which area merchants may choose among three promotional packages during the fall and spring academic terms, ranging from one or two meals a day to a weekend package for student-athletes. Benefits to the restaurateur include season tickets to Patriot games, advertisement in the Patriot basketball program, a corporate sign in the college gymnasium, and coupon distribution options at home games.
Other Contributory Levels
A number of other contributory levels make it possible for people to take an active part in helping student-athletes. All contributions are tax deductible; names of contributors are listed in special sections of the Patriot basketball program; and all donors receive weekly PBSO Patriot newsletter updates during the season, according to Smithson. Head Coach, Stan Cromartie, will lead the Raiders into the 2000-2001 season. After achieving an encouraging 15-15 season and a top ten state ranking last year, Cromartie is looking forward to even more success this year. Seminole Community College President, Dr. E. Ann McGee, when she announced Cromartie's appointment, said: "In Stan Cromartie, we have an individual whose athletic coaching talents are matched by a personal strength of character that makes him ideally suited to lead our men's basketball program." Cromartie's approach to coaching brings to life what President McGee said in her announcement. He is dedicated to maximizing the talents that young athletes possess. "I try to identify the special skills a young man has and find the best ways to use them," Cromartie said. "Our athletes must recognize they have a complete life ahead of them. I want them to learn lessons in the classroom and on the basketball court that they can call upon in whatever endeavor they choose. I want to attract young men to our program who understand their achievements in life will overshadow anything they will ever do on a basketball court."
