Senior guard Brooke Stewart has been a key contributor during her four years as a Panther, hitting the 1,000 point plateau in December 2002. Stewart leaves mark on Pitt basketball history by RYAN FALOON
For The Pitt News January 29, 2003
Since her days as a dominating shooting guard in high school, Brooke Stewart has become a media magnet in the Pittsburgh area, where she receives recognition for her various achievements. Stewart, Pitt's 5-foot, 8-inch senior shooting guard from East Allegheny High School, was recruited after a four-year high school career in which she was a standout on the basketball court. Finishing her career at East Allegheny with more than 3,000 points and averaging 29 points per game, Stewart has since had her No. 5 jersey retired from their women's basketball program. With such a remarkable career under her belt, involving broken records and numerous honors, Stewart's decision to commit to a previously unsuccessful Pitt basketball program was questionable. However, she admitted that her choice to come to Pitt was a good one and recalled several reasons for her decision. "I chose Pitt because it's close to home," Stewart said. "I'm really close with my family."

  • The first basketball regional and national championship tournaments were held in 1997. Eight regional tournaments were held around the country, followed by the national tournament in Louisville, in April 1997.
Basketball is different from football, because the national tournament is not open to any number of teams. To qualify for the national finals, teams were required to participate in the various regional tournaments. Thus, only eight teams qualified for the national tournament.
In 1998 and 1999, the national tournament was moved to Los Angeles, and played in the LA Forum. In 2000 and 2001, the tournament was played in the Walt Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, FL.

Welcome to the BIG EAST Conference
For the past 13 seasons, the Pitt basketball program has made more NCAA Tournament appearances and made more network television appearances than it did in its entire history prior to 1982. Is it merely good fortune? Not quite. There can be no denying that Pitt's move from the Eastern 8 to The BIG EAST in 1982 is the single-most important event in the history of Pitt basketball. Before 1982, Pitt would play to full houses at Fitzgerald Field House for its games with Duquesne and West Virginia, and a oncle-only visit by North Carolina (1971) and Duke (1980), but it wasn't too difficult to stretch out and relax at Pitt home games during parts of the 1960s and 1970s. in 1981-82, Pitt's last season in the Eastern 8, Pitt sold approximately 500 basketball season tickets. Ironically, the Eastern 8, formed in 1976-77, was actually the original idea for a major basketball conference in the East. Coaches and administrators from Pitt, Duquesne, George Washington, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Rutgers, Villanova and Penn State pooled their interests and started the conference from scratch. Unfortunately, the conference suffered from low visibility and instability. Penn State was the first to jump overboard, deciding to go the independent route after the 1978-79 season. Villanova then accepted an offer from the newly formed BIG EAST in 1980.

They play for real without any audience (see March Madness) to see who's any good and then re-open in April with a finely polished product called the NBA Playoffs. Welcome to the WCBCH site. This site tracks the history of the women's college basketball national championships year by year, starting with the first CIAW and NWIT championships in 1969. Sites, seedings, scores...you'll find it all here. (Well, eventually....) As you can see, this page is always under some construction... please be patient! The brackets for each year's tournament are complete, including the final results and standings from the 2000 tournament. The year-by-year summaries are going to be a more long-term project, including interviews and reflections from some notables. I have added information on the National Women's Invitational Tournament from its inception in 1969 through 1981. I am still trying to dig up information on the more recent NWIT tournaments, so if anyone has any relevant information, I would of course be more than happy to accept it and add it to the site! As you look through the site, if you find any discrepancies, please bring them to my attention. This information is all based on NCAA public records and newspaper coverage, but there may have been mistakes in transcriptions. Also, any suggestions/recommendation/game scores or results will be most welcome, especially information concerning the CIAW/AIAW years.

FIBA NBA NCAA WNBA ... MWBA Below is a brief history of the rules of basketball, with the year and detail of each major change in the way the game is played. I have adapted this from the Nothing But News email from Basketball Australia Year Changes Made First publicly played game using the 13 rules (see here Field goals changed to 2 points, free throws to 1. Teams to consist of 5 players Glass backboards introduced, 5 fouls and a player is disqualified. Designated free throw shooter rule eliminated - i.e. the person fouled has to shoot the free throw FIBA founded. Each team to have 5 players plus 2 substitutes who could enter the game twice each. After every score the game is restarted with a jump ball. FIBA introduces rules to limit the advantages of taller players. Three timeouts allowed, ball inbounded from baseline after baskets. Court divided into 2 halves and ten second rule introduced. Substitutes increased to 5 and players were disqualified after 4 fouls. 3 second rule implemented, to prevent tall players "camping" under the basket and to promote faster play. Time outs increased from 3 to four, and substitutes now number 7. The right to opt for possession rather than free throws in the final 3 minutes is brought in. Pivoting, and the right to lift the pivot foot before shooting, passing or dribbling is allowed. Asian players introduce the jump shot.
