The Ancient Olympic Games
The Olympic Games were celebrated 320 times every four years in the sacred stadium at Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 B.C. Though boxing and wrestling were added later, the first Olympic event was a sprint. The prize was an olive leaf and deification by poets, as well as recognition as a hero forever.

Sparks Celebrate African-American History Month: Penny Toler
From her playing days to the front office, Penny Toler is a WNBA pioneer. Sparks General Manager Virginia “Penny” Toler is known for a string of WNBA firsts. First to score a basket in the WNBA’s inaugural game, first to transition from the “court” to the “executive suite” as General Manager, and first to dethrone the four-time Houston Comets. Yet, she still believes that unless young African-American athletes realize the value of education and excellence ‘off the court’ those “firsts” will be just another line in history books. Widely recognized as the first player to score a basket in WNBA history, Virginia “Penny” Toler began her career with the Los Angeles Sparks as the starting point guard in the League’s inaugural game on June 21, 2997 at the Great Western Forum. Originally allocated along with Lisa Leslie, as one of two Los Angeles franchise players, Toler retired from professional basketball in November 1999 with a combined 12 years overseas and WNBA playing experience to become the second the second general manager in team history. Primarily responsible for player personnel and strategy, Toler accomplished in just two years what no other general manager in WNBA history had been able to do. Assembling a championship caliber team that would eventually dethrone the four-time WNBA champion Houston Comets, Toler and the Sparks delivered the first-ever WNBA Championship to the city of Los Angeles.

The History of Basketball The History of basketball, a game that started with 18 men in a YMCA gymnasium in Springfield, Mass., has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide. The man who created this instantly successful sport was Dr. James Naismith. Under orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, head of Physical Education at the School for Christian Workers. Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. Remarkable Authentic Vintage Art Posters The original poster has sold at auction for $3,600. Vintage Art Posters-Large Collection of Authentic Art, Movie and Memorabilia Posters, Including Circus Posters, Movie Posters, Wild West Posters, European Posters, Animal Posters, Sports Posters and Fashion Posters. His first intention was to bring outdoor games indoors, i.e., soccer and lacrosse. These games proved too physical and cumbersome. At his wits' end, Naismith recalled a childhood game that required players to use finesse and accuracy to become successful. After brainstorming this new idea, Naismith developed basketball's original 13 rules and consequently, the game of basketball.

In fact, Purdue Olympians have accounted for 12 gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals with hopes of more at the 1996 Games. The following is an overview, chronologically, of the performances of Purdue Olympians in past Olympiads. 1900 - Paris, France - Purdue's Ray Ewry came away with three gold medals. The Lafayette, Ind., native captured the standing long jump with a distance of 3.21 meters (10 feet, 6.25 inches). Ewry also won the standing triple jump with a jump of 10.58 meters (34-8.5). Finally, he set a world record with his gold medal-winning standing high jump of 1.65 meters (5-5). 1904 - St. Louis, United States - Ewry again stole the show in Olympic athletics competition. Tabbed the "Human Frog," Ewry again won gold medals in the standing high jump (1.60 meters/5 feet, 3 inches), standing triple jump (10.54 meters/34-7.25) and standing long jump. His long jump mark of 3.476 meters (11-4.875) bested his previous Olympic distance, as well as the world record at that time. 1906 - Athens, Greece -

    Basketball
Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal.

The drills are great tools for improving every practice and workout.
Unlike most basketball books for women, this unique resource goes beyond the basics to address topics for the serious-minded player, including: an overview of the history of women's basketball; identifying priorities, establishing goals, and seizing opportunities; 10 steps for handling success; getting the most out of practice and games; dealing with special game situations and matchups; where to play during the off-season; teamwork, coachability, and attitude; and recruitment.
Filled with proven principles, innovative drills, and conditioning guidelines designed especially for women

The Olympic Games as we know them have been around for over 100 years. But did you know that the Games go back to a tradition that began in the eighth century B.C.? This article picks up where Part I left off. Read on to find out about the end of the original Olympic Games, and how they came back, better than ever, after 1,500 years!
    This week:
    The Games Are Banned
After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.
