History Today August, 1999 THE SHOCK OF THE NEW.(innovative lance charge leads to Norman victories)
Author/s: Rupert Willoughby Rupert Willoughby describes the battle of Durazzo (1081), arguing that the Norman cavalry's new `shock charge', first seen at Hastings, decisively altered medieval warfare. THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS, decisive in itself and one of the best documented in medieval history, was also a conflict between opposing methods of warfare. Since antiquity, the main cavalry weapon, the lance, had either been used for stabbing or thrusting at an enemy, or had been hurled like a javelin. These traditional techniques, and their limitations, had been clearly demonstrated at Hastings, where repeated cavalry charges by the Normans against the `shield-wall', or `war-hedge', of the English infantry on Senlac Hill had proved ineffective through most of the day. According to the evidence of the Bayeux Tapestry, the Normans had a preference at Hastings for hurling their lances. However, there are also depictions in a couple of panels of an entirely new technique: a minority of knights are seen to charge with a heavier type of lance which is gripped under the armpit and aimed across the horse's head. Associated technical advances, such as the raising of the saddle fore and aft so that the knight was not unseated on impact, are also illustrated in the Tapestry, which provides the earliest iconographic evidence of these innovations.

The sense of space and stillness hits you at once. When you look up from the valley towards the hilltops there are only trees and fields in sight. You can hear little but birdsong. The occasional rumble of a train on the embankment provides the only interruption to this quiet corner of East Sussex. It is hard to imagine a more perfect image of the English countryside than here at Doleham in the Upper Brede valley. For many residents it is even harder to imagine why someone would want to rip it all up.

Originally part of the old county of Sussex , from the Old English “Suo Saxe” or South Saxons, East Sussex is a south coastal county running from Brighton eastwards to the ancient port of Rye. It has a rich history of both Saxon and Norman times. William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey, beat King Harold at the battle of Hastings and the town of Battle and its abbey commemorate his victory. The chalk hills of the South Downs crosses the county, reaching the sea in an imposing line of cliffs, of which Beachy Head is the most famous. There are a number of popular seaside resorts including Brighton , Eastbourne, Bexhill and Hastings, all easily reached from London by train of car.

July is usually the warmest month, and the southwest is the warmest region. Coastal areas tend to be less cold than inland in winter, except in the east and northeast when winds are onshore from the east (less than 10% of the time).

With the arrival of the Normans, art and architecture produced in England reflects French influence . The Norman and Plantagenet kings hold French territory during the period, and artists and objects travel between the two countries. Majestic cathedrals are erected from the end of the eleventh century; those at Durham (Fig. 1) , Canterbury, Ely, Wells (Fig. 4) , and Lincoln (Fig. 3) are among the most famous. By the end of the period, English embroideries are so renowned for their refinement that they are known throughout Europe as opus anglicanun
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, prince of Powys, gradually brings the rest of Wales under his control. By 1055 he rules it as a unified kingdom, but it will dissolve after his death. Despite sharing a common language, culture, and artistic tradition, the kingdoms of Wales remain fragmented until finally conquered by England. The Danish prince Canute (or Knut) conquers England in stages, expelling the Anglo-Saxon house of Wessex. In 1018, he claims the Danish throne when his brother dies and, through conquest, also gains control of Norway and Scotland. Despite a bloody beginning, Canute becomes a successful Christian monarch, enforcing old English laws and creating new ones. His military power protects the island from attack, and peace ensues. However, his sons are weaker men; after his death in 1035, the Danish empire rapidly disintegrates. Upon the death of Canute's last son in 1042, Edward ("the Confessor"), son of the Saxon king defeated by Canute, returns from Normandy and claims the throne.

h istory Background to the Central Region Structure The principle behind the representative teams was to put in place a structure that would support long term financially the selection of representative teams from players playing in the area, complimented by pick ups to strengthen the team. For next season the team squad will be selected at the Regional Tournament in late February 2002.

William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066 was not the only attack on England that year. On September 25, 1066, less than three weeks before William defeated King Harold II Godwinson at the battle of Hastings, that same Harold had been victorious over his other opponent of 1066, King Haraldr Hardrádi of Norway at the battle of Stamford Bridge. It was an impressive victory, driving an invading army of Norwegians from the earldom of Northumbria; but it was to cost Harold dear. In telling the story of this neglected battle, Kelly DeVries traces the rise and fall of a family of English warlords, the Godwins, as well as that of the equally impressive Norwegian warlord Hardrádi. KELLY DEVRIES is Associate Professor, Department of History, Loyola College in Maryland. Reviews This very accessible narrative...tells the story of 'the first two important battles of 1066', Fulford Gate and Stamford Bridge, and of the leaders of the opposing English and Norwegian factions.
