Gurus tell stressed-out urban professionals to visualise places like this to relax. The upper Brede valley in East Sussex is as pleasant an area of countryside as you could find. Even after flooding it looks lovely, a mosaic of meadows, traditionally managed fields and ancient woodland. Not for nothing is this an "area of outstanding natural beauty". It's precious for wildlife too, sheltering dormice, water voles, bats, and innumerable birds including barn owls. Running through the valley is a rare "ripple" stream where sea trout travel upstream to spawn. Soon, the imagination will be the only way to see it if, as seems probable, the South East England Regional Assembly (Seera) today agrees it as the route for Hastings' controversial bypass. In spite of a highly equivocal report, the councillors remain convinced the bypass will remove traffic from Hastings' most congested roads and bring about "economic regeneration". The river valley won't be the only area destroyed. Three sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) will also be vandalised, including Combe Haven right beside Hastings. SSSIs are nationally important nature sites, sustaining rare species and vital to the country's ecology.

A Regional Discovery in the Garden of England
May 29, 2003 - June 7, 2003
L iterature and history, undulating green landscapes and seaside resorts, castles and cathedrals: while the mellow English spring blooms into summer, join us for gentle days of exploration in the heartland known as "The Garden of England."
Here is a bright and diverse regional discovery, showcasing the area's varied roles in England's history and culture. The murder of Thomas Becket, the Rochester of Charles Dickens, the Battle of Hastings and the Battle of Britain, cottage gardens and shingle beaches: this corner of England is a microcosm of the English heritage of commoner and king.
Our road trip first takes us the route of Chaucer's pilgrims, through Dickens' beloved Rochester, to the medieval cathedral city of Canterbury. We'll explore the fabled city, and visit historic Dover Castle and the legendary white chalk cliffs. Visits as well to picturesque Bodiam Castle and the interesting home of Rudyard Kipling. Then, it's on to "1066 Country." From a stay in the Sussex countryside, we visit the site of the Battle of Hastings, and the seaside resort of Brighton with its majestic (if surpassingly gaudy) Royal Pavilion. Victorian Eastbourne, Lewes, the quaint village of Alfriston, Royal Tunbridge Wells, hop fields and orchards and unexpected adventures lie along the way.

History The first-known inhabitants of England were small bands of hunters, but Stone Age immigrants arrived around 4000 BC and farmed the chalk hills of Salisbury Plain, constructing the mysterious stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury. They were followed by the Bronze Age Celts from Central Europe who began arriving in 800 BC, bringing the Gaelic and Brythonic languages (the former is still spoken in Scotland, the latter in Wales). The Romans invaded in 43 AD and took only seven years to quell resistance and control most of England. The Scottish and Welsh tribes were more of a problem, resulting in the building of Hadrian's Wall across northern England to keep out the marauding Scots. The Romans brought stability, nice and straight paved roads and Christianity; in return, the Brits gave the Romans a headache and a dent in the empire's expense account. The Romans were never defeated, they just sort of faded away around 410 AD as their empire declined.

Study in the United Kingdom:
An International Experience
"The U.K. is the #1 destination for students who want to study overseas." – Source: Britain on a Budget
One of the most sought-after study abroad destinations in the world, the United Kingdom is an area of enormous regional diversity - in geography, history, tradition, outlook, and dialect.
Located in the UK county of East Sussex, in south-eastern England, the International Study Centre provides students with a personal window on the world around them. The area is rich in history and culture, boasting some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.
Wealden is full of market towns and pretty villages. All over the district visitors delight in discovering mediaeval churches, thatched cottages, ancient priories and moated castles. The green, rolling hills are complemented by patches of wooded countryside, vineyards and windmills, as well as the picturesque Cuckoo Trail, a popular venue for walkers and cyclists. Eastbourne, one of the largest cities in the area, with a population of 80,000, is situated close to the ISC on the Sunshine Coast. The hills surrounding the city protect it from the clouds, creating a seaside resort with an exceptional amount of sunshine and low rainfall. Eastbourne offers many activities for locals and visitors, including the International Folk Festival held in April and the Contemporary Arts and Theatre Festival in October. Nearby sites include the magnificent chalk cliffs at Beachy Head and The Seven Sisters Country Park, with more than 700 acres of open access for walking, cycling and canoeing.

Articles published or prepared for a biweekly op-ed column in the 1590 Broadcaster , Nashua, NH History— Dr. Bob Tyson History is who, what, where, why and when. History is current events that are no longer current. A recent "Open letter to Litchfield Residents," from Judith Burke, published in the Hudson Litchfield News, mentions complaints from Manchester residents about "the use and referencing of twelve year old text books, such as History! (this large world has changed many times over since then." Exclamation and parentheses are Ms. Burke's. Litchfield can't bother to pick nits with Manchester schools or anyone else for that matter over something so miserably minor as twelve year old text books, such as History! (Exclamation mine). History, like math, should not be rewritten every twelve years. Current events can be covered by referencing magazines and newspapers that have not even yet turned yellow. 99.8% of civilized human history occurred before 1986. Let's just teach the students that first. The rest will come with time. A History-before-1986 syllabus (that's Latin for what-is-gonna-be-on-the-test), would cover everything you need to know that has happened so that you repeat the good stuff and don't do the bad stuff.

SCHOOL GETS ITS CASH THANKS TO TV STUNT!
WE TEAM UP WITH MARK THOMAS TO WIN DAY FOR WORTHING
VICTORY! Our campaign about the insurance firm trying to cash in on a shortage of funds at a Worthing primary school has proved an astonishing success! We teamed up with Channel 4’s Mark Thomas Product to really put Allied Dunbar on the spot over their involvement with Thomas A Becket First School in Tarring . And, in the face of an unwelcome publicity spotlight on their schemes, the insurance giant agreed on the spot to cough up the £500 they had offered the school as a bribe to make parents listen to their sales pitch. With another £500 also on its way from Channel 4 itself, if the Government performs its part of the deal under its Sports Match scheme, the school should end up with Or so they thought. But they had not reckoned with Mark Thomas, the TV comedian/investigator who last month broke the scandal of Labour minister Michael Meacher’s secret property empire. He agreed with us that there was injustice in the air and set off to Allied Dunbar HQ in Swindon - together with a Welsh Male Voice Choir ! In a priceless scene which has yet to be broadcast, but is scheduled for the show on Wednesday February 14, the 24 singers went through their repertoire while Mark argued that they made up the total of 40 people that Allied Dunbar had demanded in the first place before they would give the school its money. After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, the insurance giants backed down. A shock away win in Swindon for Worthing, thanks to the vocal travelling support! *

"A bypass in our democracy
Plans for a south coast motorway must be destroyed, not just hidden." Extract from an article by George Monbiot
Guardian Newspaper, Thursday March 8 2001. "The primary purpose of all new development is to provide contracts for developers. When they obtain permission to proceed, the value of the land they own can rise a thousandfold. Credit lines open, the Treasury unlocks its gates, and public funds are turned into private income." "In the 1980s, the Conservative government, assiduously lobbied by the road-building firms, set out to persuade the public that new roads relieve traffic and generate wealth." "The road builders wanted a motorway along the south coast, from Folkestone in Kent to Honiton in Devon. The contracts would be worth more than £5bn. But the new road would pass through several marginal constituencies, destroying some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes and best protected ancient monuments. The Tories backed down. But developers never give up

British Politics as a Continuation of the Battle of Hastings - by Other Means
Those
who report on British politics - especially those visiting from abroad - often bemoan the hide-bound class warfare inherent in British politics, often accusing us of "tribal" allegiances. Little do they know it, but they're a lot closer to the truth than they realise. In 1066, England was just another run-of-the-mill pre-feudal society. Some households were rich and powerful, some were poor and powerless, but allegiances largely depended on family ties, stretching to include servants, slaves, cattle and even wives. Similar social structures could be found all across Europe. The lowest serf would be expected to fight in his master's cause, but would expect his master's protection in return. But when William of Normandy landed at Hastings to claim the English throne, his victory was more than just one in the eye for the Anglo-Saxon royals. William landed with a band of eager followers, who expected reward for their support. So, as soon as he had the crown on his head, he set about consolidating his position and rewarding his supporters with grants of land and titles across his new realm. In one fell swoop, the entire English ruling class was supplanted - by a French ruling class. In that one action, a tribal element was introduced into the relationship between rulers and ruled.
