82. Heritage : Bayeux
On the 14th of October 1066, the battle of hastings took place For more informationon the Bayeux tapestry The regional Council of Lower Normand'ys website

From the Middle Ages to World War II, Bayeux was greatly affected by history.
Bayeux's rich heritage undoubtedly lies in its Gothic cathedral, Notre-Dame de Bayeux and in its famous tapestry recounting the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. During the Roman era, religious draperies would often cover castle walls and were as common as paintings are nowadays. But due to their fragility they were not able to survive the centuries to be admired today. The Bayeux tapestry, a piece of wool embroidery that is said to have been woven by Queen Matilda of Flanders herself, is consequently a rare example of this type of art.
Dating back to the 6th century and 70 meters long, the tapestry depicts the epic of the Norman Conquest and is at the same time a historical piece of work as it gives an account of medieval life.
In 1064, the King of England, Edward the Confessor, decided that William, Duke of Normandy, would be his successor to the throne. He sent Harold II, chief magnate of the Kingdom to announce the news to William.

Waltham Abbey and the surrounding area provides a unique blend of heritage and countryside attractions to entertain the whole family, many of which are free. There's the Abbey Gardens and Church, Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary and Tree Park to explore. The historic market town also boasts a museum, shops, an excellent range of restaurants, cafes and pubs, and nearby there's the River Lee Country Park, farms and leisure centres; all you need for a great day out any time of the year. Historic Market Town
Waltham Abbey is a town of contrast. With its Church, much of which dates back to the 12th century, 16th century timber framed buildings, and Art Nouveau Town Hall, the town is a living example of how its history has evolved.
Visit Waltham Abbey's Market Square on either a Tuesday or Saturday and you'll experience an open market. The bustling activity should not be missed. What's more, the main street in the town centre is pedestrianised, so you can stroll around exploring the town's shops* in comfort and there are several conveniently located car parks to choose from. For more information about the market, please contact Waltham Abbey Town Council on 01992 714949.

The sense of space and stillness hits you at once. When you look up from the valley towards the hilltops there are only trees and fields in sight. You can hear little but birdsong. The occasional rumble of a train on the embankment provides the only interruption to this quiet corner of East Sussex. It is hard to imagine a more perfect image of the English countryside than here at Doleham in the Upper Brede valley. For many residents it is even harder to imagine why someone would want to rip it all up. But today's expected approval by the south-east England regional assembly (Seera) of two bypass schemes that will cut through the heart of this and other unspoilt areas near Hastings could herald the beginning of a big change. The bypasses are designed to flank Hastings, described as the most deprived district in the south-east. Supporters - including the local Labour MP, Michael Foster, anxious to hang on to his key marginal seat - say the roads will help to regenerate the seaside town. But they are set to become the most controversial road building schemes since Newbury and Twyford Down. The decision to go ahead lies ultimately with the deputy prime minister, John Prescott, but since he was a key proponent of the regional assembly he is unlikely to overturn one of Seera's first big decisions.

89. Measham History Page

http://www.btinternet.com/~simonmarchini/meashamPage.htm
Home The objective of this page is to pull together all the other pages of information about the Mease valley and Measham into a one coherent page. It also adds extra details to the other accounts and looks at things from a purely Measham perspective. The page is divided into the following sections:
Pre Roman
Pre Roman Measham was probably centred along the Mease and Gilwhiskaw. Some iron age crop makings have been found in the area of Gilwhiskaw. These is an interesting place name in the this area of Limbrow or Limborough (this depends on which map you use) which is certainly in the correct area of the crop markings. Perhaps this indicates the location of the first settlement in the parish of Measham. However, there is little archaeological evidence to support this - and probably will never be as the area was significantly disturbed when the Ashby canal was built through the area in the 18 th century. Also in this area across the Mease valley in Appleby there is an other iron age settlement. Apart from these fragments of information there is very little known human activity in the area. This, of course, does not mean that Measham was not occupied it is just there is little evidence
