~ Exotic Pets ~ What is an exotic pet? Well there are many species of exotics that range from reptiles such as snakes and lizards to big cats such as tigers and mountain lions. People have also been known to have hedge hogs, skunks and many other kinds of exotics. All need special care of their own. So you want to own an exotic Pet? Do you know all there is to know about owning this pet? Impulsive buying can lead to trouble. You may not have the time that it takes to own an exotic or you may not have the space because some exotics (depending on what they are) can get pretty big. My exotic story: My name is Erica and I own and have owned several exotic pets. One thing you should know about owning exotic pets is the amount of time you're going to have them. How long are they going to live? A lot of lizards and smaller exotics don't live that long and maybe this is what you want. Some snakes and turtles and birds can live to be quite old. My collection over the years has dwindled down. I've lost quite a few pets by no fault of my own. I have 4 snakes now. My first snake I bought was

We currently (apr 01) have in awesome baby bearded Dragons. These are sweet and locally bred and reared! For a limited time only Come check 'em out while they last! This CareSheet was compiled by Eileen Underwood We found her information to be almost identical to ours! The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is rapidly becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. A moderate-sized lizard, attaining a maximum length of about 22 inches (half of which is tail), it has a mellow dispostion and seems to enjoy interacting with humans. A native to south, central Australia Pogona viticeps can be found in arid, rocky, semi-desert regions and arid open woodlands. They are diurnal (active during the day) and seem to fall asleep within minutes of the light going off in the evening. With proper care bearded dragons have lived for 10 years in captivity. Because of very restrictive wildlife export laws in Australia, all individuals available in the United States are captive bred from founder animals imported from Europe. Housing: Initially a relatively bare enclosure is preferred, either glass aquarium or large plastic enclosure. A screen cover is recommended, primarily to protect the lizard from children and / or other pets. Within the first year the dragon will grow to almost its full length, so while a 10 gallon aquarium may be suitable for a new hatchling, within 6 months or less the animal will require an enclosure 24 inches long (e.g., a 20 gallon long aquarium). As adults, a 50 gal tank (or larger) is preferable, especially if two or more animals are to be housed together. As adults bearded dragons love to climb branches and bask, be sure if several animals are housed in one large enclosure to provide multiple basking sites. They also benefit from having hiding spots. Females especially appreciate having a safe place to escape from the male's attentions during breeding season.

The circus. The place where people show off their physical talents. But has anyone thought about what a lizard circus would be like? The perfect species for this would be the Australian Bearded Dragons. Although not every Bearded Dragon of the eight different species actually have beards, when they do have beards, the females have beards as well as the males. Therefore, you already have your bearded lady. Also, their bellies can be gray, brown, or brick red, so instead of a red clown nose, they have red bellies. As for fire eaters, the Dragons' body when basking heats higher than 100 degrees F! So, these wonderful lizards are amazing, and they also make great pets.
The Lovable Lizards
is included in their diet. It consists of grey crickets, giant mealworms, mealworms, waxworms, pinkie mice, and roaches. Although protien is without question the main course on the Bearded Dragons' menu, finely chopped vegetables are necessary as well. They consist of mustard greens, collard greens, beet greens, kale, bok choy, thawed mixed veggies, fancy dark lettuce, sprouts, green beans, peas, nasturtium leaves and flowers, hibiscus leaves and flowers, and dandelion leaves and flowers. Although the bugs in their diet may seem, well, unpleasant, after the owner of a Bearded Dragon has gotten used to it, the large lizard will become a friend that will last for years.

Box 1060, Columbia, SC 29202-1060; Department of Small Animal Medicine and Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA Abstract: A five-year-old, captive-bred, male bearded dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) was presented for lethargy, weight loss, and dehydration. Initial hematology and biochemistry tests revealed a severe leukocytosis (77,000 leukocytes /µl), an increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity (453 IU/L), and a hypercholesterolemia (500 mg/dl) as compared to the International Species Information System (ISIS) reference ranges. Blood cultures were positive for Clostridium sp. Monocytoid infiltrates were observed in an initial liver biopsy. Follow-up hematology showed a continued leukocytosis with a majority population of mature and immature monocytes. Based on these findings, a diagnosis of metastatic monocytic leukemia was made. After ten months of supportive care, the animal was euthanized due to declining quality of life. Post-mortem histopathology showed metastasis of monocytes to the periocular region, liver, kidney, and intestines. This is the first report of monocytic leukemia with tissue metastases in a reptile.

Size: Length - 250mm. Identification: Large, robust bearded dragon with well developed beard. The inside of the mouthis usually bright yellow. This dragon is usually a shade of grey, although occasionally can be yellowish brown, brown to reddish brown. On juveniles there is a prominent pattern but on adults this is obscure or absent. There is sometimes dark or pale blotches on the body. Their belly is white to pale grey with short streaks running along the length of the body. The mature males develop a grey to black 'beard' and an obscure pale green to blue tinge on the forepart of their head. Call/Song:
Eastern Australia, from Cooktown (Qld) to south-eastern South Australia. Habitat: Woodlands and dry eucalypt forests (even in urban regions).
Feeding: Feeds on insects, small lizards and snakes. Breeding/Nesting: Clutches of 15-35 eggs are laid in shallow burrows. Occasionally 2 clutches are laid per season. Movement: Some lizards (especially the dominant males) regularly engage in a variety of display movements or sequences, particularly during courtship or defense of territory. Up to 75 different sequences have been observed, including head-bobbing, head-licking, push-ups, erecting beard, expanding body and changing colour.
If approached, the bearded dragon will tend to remain still, relying on its camouflaged colouration for protection. As a last resort, the dragon will take a defense posture (as seen in photograph).

Size and Appearance: At 4 weeks old it is 5 inches long and at 9 weeks old it is 10 inches. They are generally brown in colour with various markings of red to yellow depending on species. When the male animal is frightened or defending his territory from another male, the scales of the bottom side of the neck can be raised. Relatives: Frill neck lizards. Breeding: Female Bearded Dragons lay clutches of 15-25 eggs. The hatchling are 8-10cm long. They vary in colour and size, the males having larger beards. They take four months to mature. The young feed one to two times a day. Adults feed every one to two days. About 20 percent of the diet should be vegetables. Bearded Dragons as Pets The Bearded dragon is a reptile and a good pet if you want. However, they must have hiding areas out of the light so they can properly regulate their heat. As Australia does not allow its wildlife to be exported, the animals currently available are descendents of a small number removed years ago. Bearded Dragons are mainly insect eaters. About

Bearded Dragons are fast becoming one of the most popular pet lizards in captivity. They are generally tame, easy to handle and moderate in size. Native to Australia, these lizards are easy to maintain in captivity if provided proper diet and husbandry. Housing
Bearded Dragons require large enclosures to thrive. They can be housed singly, in pairs or in groups of one male and two females. Two or more males and a group of females can be housed together if the cage is large enough and multiple basking sites and hiding places are provided. Glass or acrylic aquariums with screen tops to provide good ventilation or screened cages make good enclosures. Many types of substrates can be provided for the use in Bearded Dragon enclosures. Reptile sand (no finer than #30) or reptile bark can be used as long as the animals do not inadvertently ingest the material while feeding. Branches, driftwood, cork bark and rocks should be provided for the dragons to climb and for basking sites. Outdoor enclosures can be used as long as they are secure enough to keep the lizards in and predators out. Ample sun, shade and water drainage are important. Lighting
Natural sunlight is very important for Vitamin D3 and calcium utilization in the body. Sunlight filtered through glass is not adequate to provide the necessary UVB rays needed for this process to occur. When natural sunlight is not available, artificial UVB sources should be used daily for 12-14 hours. Repti-sun by Zoo Med is one of the better UVB sources available. The tube or fluorescent type UVB bulbs provide better UVB rays than the regular bulb type lights. It is important to change the lights every six months as the concentration of the rays diminishes with time even though the light is still working.

    Inland Bearded Dragons
    (Pagona vitticeps)
Color Morphs Due to their docile disposition , hardiness , and medium size , the Inland Bearded Dragon is rapidly becoming one of the most popular lizards in the pet trade. They are also one of the most successfully bred animals in herpetoculture. Hatchling size is approximately 3.75 " and adults can reach nearly two feet. Since we first began working with the red or red/gold color morph of P. Vitticeps *Please note: all dragon hatchlings are raised outdoors in natural sunlight for at least one month prior to sale unless otherwise specified. They are guaranteed to be healthy for one month after purchase and will be replaced during that period if you are not fully satisfied. We are not able to guarantee gender, nor do we guarantee any certain coloration in hatchling bearded dragons.
    Red/gold Dragons (Pogona vitticeps)
    Red/gold x Sandfire (Pogona vitticeps)
We have achieved excellent results with this combination in the past. We have kept many of these crosses back for breeding stock and have discovered that they are very hardy and often have spectacular colors and patterns. Although the colors they attain are within the spectrum of the red/gold, they are usually at the more colorful end of that spectrum. They have also produced many animals that have grown up to have the coloration of a Sandfires when kept in the sun.
    SandFire ™ Dragons (Pogona vitticeps)
*Please note: There seems to be some confusion in the marketplace about the Sandfire dragons. Many red/gold (red phased) dragons are being sold, incorrectly, as Sandfires. In some cases offspring of animals (red/golds) that have been purchased from Sandfire Dragon Ranch have been sold as being from "Sandfire stock" and therefore Sandfire dragons. In other areas Sandfire is becoming synonymous with re/gold (red phased). Please check out your source before you pay extra for a "Sandfire" dragon. The only way to be certain of what you are getting is to look at the coloration of the parents.

    75. Bearded Dragon Care Sheet
bearded dragon hatchlings should be fed two to three times daily. I would also suggestthat you soak your dragon once a week in Return to the lizards Page Home.
    http://www.bright.net/~a1rep/a1bdcare.html
A1 Reptiles Bearded Dragon Care Sheet Make sure a shallow water dish is available at all times. Adult bearded dragons may be fed once daily. Their diet should be varied and may consist of crickets, madagascan hissing roaches, king mealworms (zophobas) and newborn mice. Vegetables and fruits should be offered twice weekly. The vegetables and fruits should be chopped up and mixed together as a salad. Fruits and vegetables may include kale, collards, carrots, mustard greens, apples and bananas. Vitamin and mineral supplements should be added to the salad mixture. All prey animals should be dusted with a high calcium supplement. During the breeding season it is very important that females be given a diet rich in calcium and vitamins to maintain good health following egg laying. A basking light should be provided at one end of the cage. The temperature at the basking area should reach 90 degrees F. There should also be a cooler area in the cage around 75 degrees F. Exposure to natural sunlight, whenever possible, is important. Make sure the enclosure you provide outside for your bearded dragon allows for good ventilation so that the animal is not overheated while being exposed to sunlight. You should also provide a shade area inside the enclosure. Ideally exposure to the sun should be three times weekly with a minimum of thirty minutes each exposure. Indoor enclosures should have a high quality full spectrum light. These full spectrum lights do not however, take the place of natural sunlight.

    A Great book!
I recently bought a Bearded Dragon and bought several books about this lizard. I have to say that this book is one of the best. It is written in a very personal way (unlike many other "take care of your pet books" and I really like that. It is also very informative and has a lot of great images. The book tells you everything you have to know if you are a Bearded Dragon owner or wants to buy one - how to choose a Bearded Dragon, the terrarium, terrarium set up, breeding, the right food etc. I especially found the "food part" informative and with a lot of nice pictures. I highly recommend this book! My BD appreciated it! :-)
Best Beardie Book on the Market
As a reptile rehabber, I have all the books on lizards and this series is by far my favorite. It starts with natural history of the Beardie. It goes over anatomy and physiology, how to choose a beardie, how to house, feed, care, and breed beardies. The care portion includes all stages of the animal's life. It has details on cage design with the health of the animal in mind. It has a wonderful health care section that includes nutritional needs, genetic problems, tramatic injury, and infectious disease. If you still have questions, this book also has a list of resources all over the US so you can contact other Beardie owners or find a breeder in your area. I recommend this book to everyone who adopts a Beardie out of our facility. Note: please read this book BEFORE you get the Beardie so you know what you're in for. They are great pets, but a lot of work.
