(www.TheSunDevils.com) Bolstered by the play of outside hitter Mia Jerkov, the University of California women's volleyball team (16-9, 6-9) upset No. 23 Arizona State (10-9, 6-8) Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. Game scores were 30-20, 30-26, 30-22 in favor of Cal. It was also the third time this season the Bears have upset a team ranked in the Top 20 - topping then No. 20 ranked Arizona, 3-0, Oct. 12 in Tucson, then No. 17 ranked Washington State, 3-2, Oct. 18 in Haas Pavilion and now No. 23 ranked Arizona State. ASU had won nine straight matches against the Golden Bears in Berkeley. ASU has now lost five straight matches. Jerkov, who had been nursing a sore left ankle that kept her out of four matches, was finally able to play a whole match and proceeded to lead the Bears with 20 kills and had an impressive .472 hitting percentage (20 kills, three errors, 36 attempts). Sophomore Camille Leffall added 10 kills, while junior setter Caity Noonan finished with 43 assists and a team-high 11 digs.

Sun Bears: The Worlds Smallest Bear Poaching Problem of Sun Bear Vital Statistics of Sun Bear ... Distribution of Spectacled Bear
"Tropical" Bears Sun, Sloth, and Spectacled Bears are usually thought of as creatures of the Northern Hemisphere but three species range quite close to the equator. In fact, two species, the spectacled bear and the sun bear, actually occur south of the equator. Very little is known about the lives and habits of tropical bears, perhaps wildlife research is not a high priority for the relatively poor countries in which these bears occur. No one doubts the importance of conservation and wildlife study, but the government of many Third World Nations often simply have no mercy for along range resource planning let alone for wildlife research. For this reason, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its associate, the World Wildlife Fund, have been a major financiers for conservation in the Third World, underwriting recovery programs for such critically endangered species as orangutans, pandas, tigers, elephants, and rhinos.
Sun Bears: The Word Smallest Bears In the rush to save other animal superstars, the little 100 pound (45 kg) bear ha been sadly overlooked. It seldom rates even a footnote in most wildlife studies, and all the information published on it would hardly fill two written pages. Yet what little data there is disturbing: In 1978 the IUCN included the Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) on its red list of endangered species.

PHOENIXLike most Americans with family or friends directly involved in the war in Iraq, Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis turns on his television set for updates with a mix of pride, concern and dread. McGinnis and the rest of the Cardinals organization have one of their own, former safety Pat Tillman, deployed overseas, and he is believed to be on the front lines. TEMPE, Ariz. There is a tattoo on the left biceps of Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs that reads "The Chosen One'' above a large letter S. The only conclusions after watching Suggs' results in an NFL testing day on Wednesday are that the Chosen One might be chosen a bit later than expected in the draft, and the "S'' refers more to his surname than his status as a football Superman. Sunday, March 23, 2003 NFL voting on OT 'going to be close'
PHOENIXChange tends to come slowly in the NFL. That's why Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, doubts a proposed change to overtime will be passed at the league's annual meetings, which begin Monday in Phoenix. But McKay said he thinks there soon will come a day when success in overtime has less to do with flipping a coin, and he said the vote on a proposal to ensure both teams have the ball in overtime is "going to be close.''

    The World's Smallest Bear
The Sun Bear is also called the Malay bear or honey bear. It is the smallest of the eight bear species.
There is very little known about the biology and habits of the sun bear. We do know, however that it is a high priority for immediate conservation efforts as it on the red-list of endangered species.
There is a fear that the sun bear may disappear from the wild before anything is known about it.
Population and Distribution The exact number of sun bears still in existence is not known. We do know, however, that the number of sun bears is steadily declining due to habitat loss and poaching.
Originally, sun bears inhabitated the lowland forests of southeast Asia from Malaysia and Indonesia as far west as India. They are now believed to be extinct in India and possibly Bangladesh. The state of the sun bear population in Burma, Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea and Vietnam is also in dire difficulty.
A number of bears are thought to exist on the island of Borneo but even there, deforestation is occurring at an accelerated rate and the long-term prospects are unclear.

Sun Bear at Jackson Zoological Park :: Photo credited to ZooNet Common Name : Sun Bear Scientific Name: Helarctos malayanus Physical Description: The Sun Bear, also known as the Malayan Sun Bear or Honey Bear, is the smallest of all bears. They are about half the size of an American Black Bear . When standing they are only about 2.5 feet tall (70 cm). The fur is black with a large yellow or white U-shaped crescent on the chest. They are about 4 feet in length. Male sun bears weigh about 145 pounds (65 kg), and females weigh about 60 pounds (30 kg).
The Sun Bear is the only bear other than the Spectacled Bear that lives south of the equator. They sparsely populate tropical rain forests in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Their habitat is declining rapidly because of human encroachment, and they could become extinct in the wild within the next few decades. Behavior : These bears are excellent climbers and spend considerable time in trees. They are primarily nocturnal, and there is no record of Sun Bears hibernating due to the year-round warm weather and availability of food. Though it is a small bear, they can be dangerous in close encounters

The Sun bear is the smallest of all the bears. When we first saw the Sun bears, because of their small size, we thought they were bear cubs. Later we found out that these bears were full sized adult bears.
As you can see by the photo on the right, their claws are very long, thick and sharp. Their claws are used for digging and tearing into the nests of bees and termites. The Sun bear also eats fruit and small animals.
The Sun bear can be found in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They enjoy climbing trees and often times will sleep on the branches of the trees.

Welcome to Free The Bears Fund Inc The Free The Bears Fund Inc mission is “To protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears throughout the world”.
We do this by raising money through donations, charity auctions, merchandising, and bear sponsorship. It is worth noting that the ABSOLUTE majority of all funds raised goes directly to fund our projects.
    OUR VISION:
TO UNLOCK THE CAGE OF DARKNESS
There is a bear in a small cage. Feel his confusion, sadness and despair.

There are people who live in a country with no welfare system, the only food, shelter and income that which they provide for themselves. These people too are in a cage: a cage constructed from poverty. Share their misery and hopelessness.
Mrs Mary Hutton, Founder of the Fund with Serey - an infant Sun Bear
There are people thousands of miles away who feel anger and despair when they think of captive bears, and the countries that exploit their wildlife. Counter productive feelings that slowly form into the bars of a cage, which holds both heart, and mind prisoner.
In a small area in Asia people work to save bears. Once poachers, they have been given the opportunity to protect the very animals they once sought to capture. Such projects radiate hope for the future: hope for sustainability of both wildlife and community alike. Hope, which allows us to escape that first cage: that of mental despair.

How small are the smallest adult bears? Malayan sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. They grows to be only four feet (1.2 m) long and 140 pounds (65 kg). Also known as "honey bears," these bears live in southeast Asian tropical rain forests and eat fruit, honey, insects, and small vertebrates. Sun bears are named for the crescent-shaped marking of orange-yellow fur on their chests, which according to legend represents the rising sun. Although smaller than other bears, sun bears are among the most dangerous animals in the Asian jungles. However, due to poaching and hunting, they are also the most endangered of all bear species. MALAYAN
SUN BEAR Southeast Asia Unknown The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous.
    Species Description and Natural History
Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.

    17. Welcome To The Great Bear Foundation

The sun bear, also known as the honey bear, is also the world's smallest and least studied bear. They also have a reputation as one of the most ferocious animals in the rainforest. Because they are so rare, very little research has been done on sun bears.
    Habitat
    • The sun bear thrives in the hot and humid lowland tropical rainforests where it rains more than 100 inches (254 cm) a year and temperatures stay constant around 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. They spend most of their life in trees where thay can forage for a huge variety of fruits and nuts year-round.
    Distribution
    • Today the sun bear exists in the forests throughout southeast Asia from northern Burma and Bangladesh, south and east across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand and south to Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because of large scale habitat destruction, it is likely that their range has been reduced in northern and western regions.

The partnership between storage specialist Dot Hill and Sun Microsystems moved another step forward this week with the release of two new storage systems from Sun. Sun released its StorEdge 3510 FC and 3310 NAS storage systems during a massive product launch Monday. The systems sport the Sun logo but were actually designed by Dot Hill as part of an agreement that began in 2002. The first fruit of the partnership was the StorEdge 3310 SCSI, a product that lacks the Ethernet network connection abilities of the 3310 NAS. The 3510 is the same size as the 3310a 3.5-inch-thick rack-mountable systembut can connect to special-purpose storage networks using the Fibre Channel technology.
