Bears Halt Red, Record
By MATT JANIGA

The Red went to Providence looking for a record setting 10th win but came home empty-handed. Saturday's 2-1 loss to Brown drops Cornell to 3-2 in the Ivy League and 9-6 overall.
Cornell was taken out of its element from the very beginning of the game. Brown's defense, however, was not the determining factor. Pouring rain forced Cornell to abandon its gameplan and avoid the waterlogged sidelines.
Warner Field's drainage was so slow that event staff had to squeegee the turf at several points throughout the game.
"It's your worst nightmare as a coach," said head coach Michelle Tambroni. Brown seemed to adjust more quickly to the soaked field and set up a penalty corner in the closing minutes of the first half. While Cornell stopped the initial shot, it failed to clear the ball from the defensive zone. The result was an unassisted goal by Brown's Laurel Pierpont. The Bears scored again just five minutes into the second half. The goal was forward Meaghan Harwood's fifth of the season. Cornell would not recover, but it would pick up its offensive pace.

But the Malayan sun bears are also one of the most enjoyable animals to observe, especially in the natural setting of Sun Bear Forest. Here, amid the cascading waterfalls and lush forest vegetation, the sun bears, named for the golden crescents on their chests, display their frolicsome nature. Extremely agile and often comical, the sun bears are great tree-climbers and make great use of the enclosure's Asian rain forest habitat.

The signing of Stewart promises the most significant changes in the Chicago offense since it became a run-first attack in '99. The plan is to go to Stewart's strengths rather than force-fit him into a rigid scheme that is based on a controlled passing game and pounding rushing philosophy. The understanding is that Stewart's best 15 plays will be different from, for example, Chris Chandler or Jim Miller, so the focus will be on Stewart where possible. The offensive core will remain the same, that of avoiding mistakes and taking the percentage play first. But coach Dick Jauron especially likes Stewart's ability to keep a play alive longer than when something misfires, so moving pockets and plays on the move will become more a part of the offense than before. SEATTLE_Discovery Channel Canada has joined forces with Woodland Park Zoo to document the transfer of 10 confiscated endangered Malayan sun bears to U.S. zoos. Beginning May 11, Discovery Channel Canada will accompany staff from Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo on a 70+ hour journey to the Sepilok Forest Reserve in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, to document the transfer of the sun bears to zoo officials. The bears come from the Sepilok Rehabilitation Center and will be relocated to eight accredited U.S zoos. The documentary about the project is set to air in Canada in January 2001. This is only the second time that the Malaysian government has allowed these highly endangered bears to legally leave the country under a long-term loan granted by the Sabah Wildlife Department. The bears will be placed in the eight accredited U.S. zoos under the sun bear Species Survival Plan (SSP) that seeks to enhance the genetic diversity among the bears at zoos in North America. Cheryl Frederick, the North American coordinator of the sun bear SSP says sun bears are a "number one candidate" for extinction because of their rapidly shrinking numbers in the wild, habitat depletion, and the increasing popularity of all bear parts for use in traditional Asian medicines and as gourmet food products. Sun bears cubs have endearing personalities and are often exploited as part of the wildlife pet trade in Southeast Asia; an adult bear is usually dangerous and expensive to keep. Such bears are turned over to the Wildlife Department and become permanent captives since re-released bears often become nuisance animals and are killed by villagers. Because of their secretive nature in the wild, study of sun bears has been difficult.

In the wild: Sun bears eat predominantly fruit, honey, insects and their larvae, small rodents, lizards, birds, earthworms, green vegetation and roots. Sun bears also relish the growing tips of coconut palms grown on plantations. This kills the palms and leads to sun bears being shot by plantation owners. At the zoo: Omnivore biscuits, a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects and honey (ocassionally fish).

The Sun Bear: (Helarctos malayanus) The Sun bear has not been studied very well, there is little known about it.
Adults are two-and-a-half feet tall from the ground to the shoulder on all fours. They can weigh up to 160 pounds.
It is the smallest of the bears, sometimes known as the "dog bear" or the "Honey Bear".
This bear is the only one known to live in the tropics.
It lives in trees in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar (formerly Burma), south China, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Because the tropical forests where these bears live are being destroyed daily, they are seriously in danger of being endangered.
How sad it will be to lose such a beautiful bear.

The partnership between storage specialist Dot Hill and Sun Microsystems moved another step forward this week with the release of two new storage systems from Sun. Sun released its StorEdge 3510 FC and 3310 NAS storage systems during a massive product launch Monday. The systems sport the Sun logo but were actually designed by Dot Hill as part of an agreement that began in 2002. The first fruit of the partnership was the StorEdge 3310 SCSI, a product that lacks the Ethernet network connection abilities of the 3310 NAS. The 3510 is the same size as the 3310a 3.5-inch-thick rack-mountable systembut can connect to special-purpose storage networks using the Fibre Channel technology. The system has eight Fibre Channel ports.

California called on its heralded freshman class in the fourth quarter and they delivered in an exciting 24-23 come-from-behind victory over Arizona State in both teams' Pac-10 opener. Freshman quarterback Kyle Boller, who was making his starting debut, led Cal on two fourth quarter scoring drives as the Bears rallied from a 23-14 deficit. Redshirt freshman wideout Michael Ainsworth had a career day, catching 11 passes for 141 and a touchdown, freshman tailback Joe Igber keyed the first fourth period scoring drive with a 34-yard run, and first-year placekicker Jeremy Hershey nailed the game-winning field goal from 25 yards out with 7:11 left in the game to provide the final margin of victory. The Golden Bears got off to a promising start when Deltha O'Neal returned the opening kickoff 53 yards to Arizona State's 43-yard line, followed by a solid drive, including 18 yards rushing from Marcus Fields. But after getting to the 20-yard line, the Bears were pushed back, and Hershey's field goal attempt hit the right upright (the fourth time this year Cal missed a field goal off an upright).

Jan. 8, 2000 Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Eddie House wasn't about to stop or slow down. Arizona State needed points in a big way, and he supplied them at a record-setting pace. House scored 61 points to tie Lew Alcindor's Pac-10 record and the Sun Devils put each one of them to use in their 111-108 victory over California in double overtime Saturday night. House had the most points by a major college player since Kansas State's Askia Jones scored 62 against Fresno State on March 24, 1994.

Originally published in the Chicago Sun-Times , January 21, 2002 For all you Bears fans who were pacing yourselves, figuring to squeeze at least one more week of excitement out of this season, I may have just the ticket for your unexpended goodwill and enthusiasm. Meet Zak Mucha, author of The Beggars' Shore , a novel set in Uptown about runaways and street thieves. Mucha's book wasn't a best seller, but it's one more book than I've written, so I'm impressed. Mucha also happens to be the grandson of Rudy Mucha, who played guard and linebacker on the 1946 Bears team that won the NFL championship behind Sid Luckman. The younger Mucha's tenuous connection to the Bears has practically nothing to do with the story I want to tell you today, but if you're patient, I'll try to tie it all together anyway. Just remember. It's a matter of karma. Until recently, Mucha worked at the Columbus-Maryville Children's Reception Center, 810 W. Montrose, an emergency shelter for abused and neglected kids from throughout the Chicago area. Now, he's writing while working part time for a moving company. That's the way serious writers do it when they're getting started.
