Sun One bears fruit - at last
But can it really rival .NET?
Sun has finally unveiled the first product in its Sun One web services strategy, seven months after it announced plans to tackle Microsoft's .NET strategy head-on. iPlanet - the company jointly owned by Sun and AOL Time Warner - will ship three integration products in September. The three products cover enterprise application integration, B2B integration and message-oriented middleware. But Simon Holloway, product marketing manager for Sun integration services, admitted Sun has been slow off the mark. "Sun could be viewed as following rather than leading. I don't think we're playing catch-up, though - we're formalising the family of products," he said. He partly blames Sun's marketing strategy, which has been dwarfed by Microsoft's .NET effort. Mike Thompson, principal analyst at Butler Group, said Sun isn't alone in its web services quagmire. "I think Sun is being a little bit hard on itself most vendors have done a fairly bad job. They need to stop talking about web services and come up with some case studies to show what the real business benefits are," he said.

April 11, 1998 BERKELEY - The No. 28-ranked California men's tennis team rolled past No. 35 Arizona State, 5-2, in its final Pac-10 home dual match of the season Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Center. The victory gave the Golden Bears a sweep in the season series with Sun Devils as Cal also defeated ASU, 4-3, on March 27 in Tempe, Ariz. The win also broke a two-match losing streak for Cal (14-4, 7-3 Pac-10). Arizona State, which fell at Stanford on Friday, dropped to 8-10 overall, 3-8 Pac-10, with the loss. Playing without its two top players, Bobby Mahal (elbow) and Nathan Jackmon (shoulder), who were both unavailable due to nagging injuries, California head coach Peter Wright was forced to go with his "B" lineup against Arizona State. But it didn't seem to matter as a fired-up Bear squad quickly surged to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point.

The Sun Bear There are so few Sun bears left nobody really knows much about them. But it is the world's smallest bear weighing only 100 pounds. New born cubs weigh about 7 ounces. They are blind and hairless. A few weeks later they are strong enough to run and play. The cubs stay with their mother until they are almost fully grown. In Borneo the bears have been reported up to 49 thousand feet on a mountain, and in Sabah, Sarawak border region 7,500 feet on Mount Kinabus. It takes a continuous block of forest of about 24,700 acres for a Sun bear to live in a place. In parts of Asia Sun bears have a reputation of being as dangerous as an enraged elephant. Borneo seems to be the most likely place to find a Sun bear. A Sun bear can be a captive pet in Sabah, Borneo. In 1960 a lot of Sun bears were caught and put in zoos in Thailand. In Bagalore, India, Sun bears are considered extinct. The populations of Sun bears are decreasing because hunters are over hunting them. The Sun bear is on the red list of endangered species. They exist only in the forests of the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Burma, and Thailand. In Bagalore, India, Sun bears are considered extinct. Can Dayak tradition help save forest?
A recent Harvard graduate, she had spent several months in Borneo tracking orangutans. It was hot, sticky, and she was fighting boredom as she watched one of the rare orange-furred apes stuff herself with fruit in the rainforest canopy above. Then she heard heavy breathing from a dead tree trunk, and looked down in surprise. "At first, I thought the noise was bees," she says. That's when a furry black missile landed on her backpack and "knocked me to the ground as I turned to run," Ms. Johnson says. "It gashed my leg with its claws, and after I shouted and kicked, it took off. "I'm really lucky," she says, rolling back her pant leg to show a still-red scar more than 16-months after the January 2000 attack. Johnson, an assistant on a long-term orangutan study, ruefully laughs at her encounter with a sun bear, the muppetlike smallest member of the ursine family. Yet the attack, in Gunung Palung National Park, was the start of a disturbing trend: There have been four more since then, after 16 years without a single incident.

71. POLAR BEARS
1. There are five other species in the genus Ursus brown bears, Americanblack bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears.
http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/PolarBears/pbscientific.html
I. Scientific Classification. A. Order - Carnivora.
The scientific order Carnivora includes bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, otters, weasels, and their relatives. All typical carnivores have well developed claws and a pair of specialized cheek teeth for cutting hard foods. B. Family - Ursidae.
All bears belong to this family. The family is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). C. Genus, species - Ursus maritimus. 1. There are five other species in the genus Ursus: brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears. Species can be distinguished by size, build, coloration, and habitat. Ursus maritimus is Latin for "sea bear". D. Fossil record.
The oldest known polar bear fossil is less than 100,000 years old. Polar bears probably developed during the Pleistocene era from an ancestral brown bear. Polar bears and brown bears are still closely related; when cross-bred, they produce fertile offspring.

Sun bear
SUBFAMILY URSINAE
Ursus malayanus Raffles, 1821
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sun bear has a short, sleek, black coat. The muzzle is short, and gray to faint orange in color. The crescent-shaped chest patch is yellowish or white. The muzzle is shorter and lighter colored than that of a black bear and in most cases the white area extends above the eyes. The ears are small and round. The paws are large and the soles are naked, which is thought to be an adaptation for climbing trees. The claws are large, curved, and pointed.
SIZE This is the smallest of the bears. Adults are about 120 to 150 centimeters (48 to 60 inches) long and weigh 27 to 65 kilograms (60 to 145 pounds). Males are 10 to 20 percent larger than females.
HABITAT Sun bears live in lowland tropical rainforests. They are excellent climbers and are thought to sleep in trees.
DISTRIBUTION The range of this species is not well documented but it is known throughout Southeast Asia from northern Burma and Bangladesh, south and east across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and south to peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Because of large-scale habitat destruction and poaching, it is likely that its range has recently been reduced in northern and western regions.
REPRODUCTION There is little information about reproductive behavior in the wild but cubs are apparently born throughout the year. The gestation period for six births at the East Berlin Zoo was reported to be 95 to 96 days, suggesting t here was no delayed implantation. Conversely, three pregnancies at the zoo in Fort Worth, Texas, lasted 174 to 240 days, suggesting delayed implantation. Litters consisted of either one or two cubs, weighing about 325 grams (10 ounces) each. Cubs are reported to remain with their mothers until they are fully grown.

This is going to get bigger every year.' The Polar Bear Club of Myrtle Beach is my kind of club. Since it only meets once a year, it hardly ever cuts into golf and other fun stuff. Better yet, the meeting only lasts about three minutes - the time it takes to run into the Atlantic Ocean, get wet, laugh a little, scream a bit, then walk back out. After that, it's all fun and games, starting with a little homemade sambuca on the beach and ending with a special lunch at Callie Baker's Roadhouse on Lake Arrowhead Road. The sun isn't really good for humans, but it is even more damaging to teddy bears and their fur color. So keep your teddy bear out of the sun and away from windows.

State News Staff Writer Lorie Milz has been tanning for about three weeks in preparation for her spring break vacation to California. Unlike hundreds of other MSU students, the finance junior isn't tanning to avoid future sunburn, she's doing it to look good. "I'm not doing it so I won't get burned. I'm doing it so I'll look tan and can wear shorts," Milz said. But what many students aren't aware of is the future risks associated with artificial tanning. James Herman, medical director at Sparrow Health System's Regional Cancer Center, said 400,000 cases of cancer are reported every year in the United States "Farmers, sailors and sun-worshipers are more prone to having skin cancer. (But) the bottom line is that you should not be tanning for the purposes of tanning," Herman said. As an alternative to tanning, he said students should look into cosmetics. Self-tanners will bronze skin and these products - along with sun block - do the same thing as tanning booths without the risk of cancer. In the meantime, local tanning parlors are witnessing a rise in bookings as students rush to achieve a golden sheen before spring break.

Clever hunters, polar bears have been known to slink along the arctic snow and ice, covering their black nose with a paw in order to sneak up on unsuspecting seals. The Malayan sun bear is named for the sunburst-shaped marking on its chest. It uses its sickle-like talons to dig for termites and other insects, lapping them up with its 10-inch-long tongue. The spectacled bear of South America gets its name from the distinctive markings around its eyes, which resemble a pair of eyeglasses.

Sun Bear The smallest of the bears, the sun bear only weighs 60 to 145 pounds. It is found in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its coat is made of short, sleek, black hairs. It bears a golden- or white-colored crescent shape on its chest and the same coloring also around its eyes. Sun bears are omnivorous: They eat everything from the tips of palm trees to birds, termites, and bees' nests. Because sun bears are rare in the wild, little information is available about their behavior or their current numbers in the wild. Sun bears originally inhabited Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India. They are now believed extinct in India and possibly in Bangladesh. Habitat loss is the primary threat to the sun bear. A burgeoning human population in southeast China, for example, results in the destruction and fragmentation of previously wild areas. No population estimate has been determined for the sun bear, but scientists are certain that its numbers are steadily declining due to habitat loss and poaching. Sun bears are also threatened by a growing trade in bears and bear parts. Sun bears are killed for food and fur and trapped for sale as pets. They are also increasingly killed for their gall bladders, an important ingredient in traditional Asian medicines. The species is protected under Appendix I of CITES.
