21. Keeping Food Away From Bears - Front Country
Truly wild bears shy away from humans, but these intelligent animalslearn quickly. Keep park bears wild store food properly!
http://www.nps.gov/seki/bear_fc.htm
Bears are at home in these parks. Their natural habitat is the forests and shrublands below 8000' (2438 meters) in elevation. They eat a wide variety of food grasses, insects, acorns, carrion and, all too often, human food. Truly wild bears shy away from humans, but these intelligent animals learn quickly. Just one experience with human food can change their natural behavior. Yet the bears are not to blame. Keep park bears wild store food properly! Each year black bears must be killed in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks as a direct result of human carelessness and improper food storage. Driven by their powerful sense of smell, black bears are drawn by the odors of human food. Once bears get this food, they continue to seek it out from backpacks, picnic tables, ice chests, and cars. They cause thousands of dollars in property damage searching for human food and garbage. When their instinctive fear of people fades, these unnaturally aggressive, destructive bears must be killed. Zoos do not want these bears, and moving them to another area is not a solution. Bears can only be relocated within the parks, where good bear habitat has bears already in it. The relocated bears must therefore move on to find new territory. They usually return to where they were trapped or die trying. Eventually, many of these bears must be killed.
What must be stored?

News Release: For Immediate Release
June 10, 2002 Keep Black Bears Wild and Free; Don't Let Them Eat People Food Contacts: Doug Updike, Senior Wildlife Biologist, (916) 445-3652
Steve Martarano, DFG Conservation Education Office, (916) 654-5866
Lorna Bernard, DFG Conservation Education Office, (916) 653-0991
Already, officials with DFG have begun receiving calls regarding bears scavenging in garbage cans, and wandering through residential neighborhoods or campsites. Although seeing a wild bear can be a unique and exciting experience, it can be unnerving when viewed under those circumstances. And more often than not, people mistakes are the biggest contributors to developing a nuisance bear. "Problems begin when bears that learn to associate an easy food supply with humans and developed areas," said Doug Updike, DFG senior wildlife biologist. "Once this happens the bear becomes habituated or conditioned to going after human food because it's easy. In the end, if people haven't changed their ways, the bear won't either." The bears who feast on human food often gain too much weight, have more cubs than normal, and become urban residents. As they get comfortable around people, their natural fear of humans can subside, resulting in breaking into homes and cars. The unfortunate result of a bear becoming habituated to human food can be death. Bears can become repeat offenders after they have lost their wildness, often causing property damage or resulting in humans fearing their close presence in their urban areas. By law, if requested, the DFG must issue a permit to have a problem bear killed.

MALAYAN
SUN BEAR Southeast Asia Unknown The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous.
Species Description and Natural History
Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.

Bears and People Can Share The Same Land!

Naturalists, Charlie Russell and Maureen Enns are undertaking this very important challenge through their project the Kamchatka Grizzlies of the Far East. This study is about testing theories that could allow for people to share habitat with this animal in ways that are safe and sustainable and also suggests ways to enjoy these large predators.
The study area for this project is situated at Kambalnoe Lake at the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. This is one of the last great wilderness areas left in the world and provides an ideal environment for this study because the bears in that area have little or no contact with human beings other than those who are studying them.
This project began by locating the ideal site and constructing a cabin at the foot of the Kambalnoe Volcano which became their base camp. In 1997, Charlie and Maureen raised 3 orphaned grizzly cubs (Chico, Biscuit and Rosie) and reintroduced them to the wild. They have returned each summer since then to continue their relationships with these cubs who have become the central participants to their study of human coexistence with bears. They are now 5 years old and about 450 pounds.
The study in Kamchatka, Russia will enter its 7th year in 2002. Many of our research goals are now being achieved. We have proven it is possible to peacefully co-exist with grizzly bears as close neighbors. Now our efforts to consider the legacy for our work, by conserving in perpetuity the Southern tip of Kamchatka begins. As we focus more on the educational focus, we are excited to announce that our first book

Safety Guide to Bears
in the Wild Printed February, 1996
Seeing a bear can be one of the most memorable experiences of a wilderness vacation, but it is our responsibility to respect the bear in its home. This means we must not force bears to leave their habitat, teach them to eat human foods, or place bears in situations where people or bears could get hurt. Preparation and education are essential to ensure our encounters with bears in the wild are positive and free from conflict. Bears are everywhere. We see them on the side of the highway, on logging roads, on the way to a campsite, near towns, or in the bush when hiking or working. Bears will usually hide from people, but remember: just because you don't see a bear, it doesn't mean they aren't around. British Columbia has about one-quarter of all black bears in Canada, and half of all grizzly bears. Both species are found throughout the province, with very few exceptions. There are no grizzly bears on Vancouver Island or on the Queen Charlottes, for instance, and there are few or no grizzlies in the heavily-settled Lower Mainland or the dry, southern areas of the province.

Wild Ideas Bearikade: animal resistant food canister for backpacking, camping and hiking
Bearikade Intro: What is a Bearikade ?
The Bearikade is a bear resistant container made of a lightweight composite sandwich. The Bearikade is easily opened by a human using the edge of a coin or other flat object such as a screwdriver blade. Animals, on the other hand, find it virtually impossible to open. The Bearikade is available in two sizes; the Weekender MKII , which will hold about 6 person days of food (2 people for 3 days) and weighs 1 pound 15 ounces or the Expedition MKII which holds about 9 person days of food and weighs 2 pounds 5 ounces. For some common questions you might have, please check out our Bearikade FAQs Overview:
Enjoying and sharing the wilderness with permanent lodgers such as Black Bears requires the diligent backpacker to plan how to keep food, toiletries and other items with odors safely secured from these intelligent, inquisitive and strong neighbors. The Bearikade food canister was introduced in the 1999 season and is currently used by Rangers in Gates of the Arctic, ANWR, Olympic, Mt. Rainier, North Cascades, Yosemite, Kings Canyon/Sequoia and Inyo. It is the lightest weight food canister approved for use in the Sierra Nevada mountains and National Park. New Features:
The Bearikade food canister introduced the use of the highest strength-to-weight ratio materials developed to meet aerospace requirements. The design geometry was chosen after reviewing thousands of questionnaires submitted to Park Officials by backpackers. The large opening answered the number one complaint that existing products had too small an opening. The external diameter is dictated by the design goal to keep Grizzly Bears from getting a jaw lock on the canister. O-ring seals make the unit moisture resistant and limit the broadcast of odor to a much smaller area. A lanyard is included in order to keep the hatch from being under foot or lost. The use of automotive/aircraft/watercraft quarter turn fasteners simplifies hatch removal without special tools (coin or washer is all it takes).
