The Belgian Culture... from Art to Pop
and from Magritte to the Smurfs
WEBORGERS: the fast way to learn the Belgian way Belgium, this small country squeezed between France and Germany, is really striking by its diversity: in languages, in people, in landscapes. This led to a social culture of its own and a cultural life full of events and strong individuals.

BELGIUM
History of the country is of course rich and complex. But this is nothing particular for a European country. We will try our best to convey a flavor of the uniqueness of Belgium WELCOME TO ALL... EXPERIENCE THE BELGIAN WAY... Sit back, relax... and enjoy. Be ready to surf the land of Tintin, good food, beer and chocolates. This is the country that invented the French (yesss!) fries and gave the Smurfs to the world. So, you will agree with me: it cannot be that bad!

GAIUS JULIUS CAESAR (Rome 12 Jul 100 b.c. - Rome 15 Mar 44 b.c.): Commentarii de bello gallico Caveat emptor: the history of the Kingdom of Belgium starts in 1830 only. Before that, its territory belonged to ten different entities, each with their own history. Belgium is part of the Low Countries, or the Netherlands, which name has been applied to the present kingdoms of the Netherlands and Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg. "Low" or "nether" refers to the geographical position of this area, which is situated largely in the western estension of the great north European plain. At the end of the Middle Ages, most of Belgium's territory belonged to the Hapsburg Empire. From 1555 to 1700 it was mostly governed from Madrid, as the Spanish Netherlands and from 1700 to 1795 from Vienna, as the Austrian Netherlands.

Belgian Culture Belgium is rich in art and culture. Its history books read like an encyclopedia of famous names: Van Eyck, Brueghel, Rubens, van Dyck, Magritte and Delvaux. Every town has its galleries and museums, its share of medieval splendour and 20th century architecture Festivals and folklore abound. The people are open and friendly, the food and drink a gourmet's delight. Come along and discover through words and pictures what makes the Belgians tick and what differentiates Belgium from its European neighbours. A Bourgeois Paradise?
Supremely boring and bourgeois - or subversive, surreal and salacious? The everyday life of the Belgians confounds the cliches. Where else will you find a Mercedes showroom in someone's living room? The Cultural Scene
Belgian cultural celebrities do not trip off the tongue: they wait to trip you up, to trick and amuse you. Tintin, Magritte, and Jaques Brel make bizarre wayward traveling companions as do Inspector Maigret, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Toots Thielemans. These are not so much icons as quirky traveling companions who know their cultural limitations.

The Cultural Scene Belgium draws in the full gamut of international performers to its festivals and venues, but home-grown talent of international standing is still a rarity. Belgian cultural celebrities do not trip off the tongue: they wait to trip you up, to trick, tease and amuse. Tintin, Magritte and Jacques Brel make bizarre, wayward companions, as do Inspector Maigret, Jean-Claude van Damme and Toots Thielemans. These are not so much icons as quirky travelling companions who know their cultural limitations. The relative isolation of such talents reflects the fragmentation of the Belgian arts scene, in turn a result of the linguistic and political splintering of the country. The rival communities are beset by cultural differences which exacerbate artistic tensions. However, in the year 2000, Brussels will take on the mantle European Capital of Culture, and there are optimistic plans to bring the different communities together under one cultural umbrella. The city plans a series of exhibitions, street carnivals and film festivals to celebrate this year in the cultural limelight. The written word
Literary Belgium has made few waves beyond its borders. Certainly, the country has suffered from the proximity and cultural dominance of the rich French and Dutch literary traditions. Strictly speaking, Belgian literature has no individual identity of its own; in the north, the Flemish-speaking writers look towards the Netherlands while the French speakers in the south look to France. As a result, even famous Belgian writers are often mistaken for French, a misapprehension which wounds national pride. In the past, Walloon writers have tended to be slow in correcting this impression since many considered themselves to be French writers of Belgian origin.

THE CULTURE OF BEER. THE BEER OF CULTURE.
In Belgium proper, the inhabitants have embraced beer to the cultural degree their French neighbors hug wine. We at New Belgium wonder why the Belgians should have all the beer bliss and want to assist bringing a little of this fermented malt beverage enlightenment to our neighborhood. The culture of beer manifests itself through glassware, culinary attributes and beer presentation.
Glassware : Beers benefit from being served in worthy glasses designed to retain foam, release aromas, show off coloring, and enhance visual presentation.
Culinary Attributes : Have you ever reveled in a dinner that served a different beer with each course? Why not? It's a blast. Check out our website for upcoming New Belgium beer dinners near you. Some beers were born for chocolate desserts, while others are the perfect compliment to shellfish. And many beers can be crucial ingredients in marinades and vinaigrettes. Belgian style beers have a rich and tasty history in culinary art.
Presentation : Fine hand-crafted Belgian style ales deserve star treatment: a Worthy Glass, the ideal pour and amount of foam (the width of two fingers), served at a flavor-enhancing temperature, and presented on a quality coaster. For recommended serving temperatures refer to the beer label.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Belgium's neighbours France, Germany and England. Conquered by German tribes, Christianised by the 7th century and carved up during the Frankish Empire in 1100, much of Belgium enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and artistry under the French Duke of Burgundy during the 14th century. With the demise of Bruges due to British competition and a silted river, Antwerp soon became the greatest port in Europe. The golden age began to tarnish in the mid-15th century when the Low Countries (present-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) were inherited by Spain, igniting a long battle against Catholic Spanish rule. The fanatically Catholic Philip II of Spain sent in the Inquisition to enforce Catholicism.

Samba all the way! - 19 June 2002
Monday 17 june 2002: Brazil-Belgium

This is the game Belgian fans have been waiting for ever since the first world cup kicked off in Uruguay in 1930. Finally we take on the samba boys for the first time in an official match. For us the world cup already is a success. The day of the game the conditions in Belgium are very brazilian: it's 34° C! I decide to watch the match on the old market square of Leuven. The square is very crowded, it seems the times haven't changed too much in 5 centuries. Only back then the entire city came to watch the decapitation of some criminal for entertainment and now we watch 22 people chasing a ball on a giant screen.
Proud to be Belgian
Finally the game starts. Many supporters are singing famous football songs. As the match unfolds Belgium starts playing better and better. The atmosphere among the supporters is becoming better and better too. Even when Brazil scores their first goal with a lucky counter-attack our supporters keep cheering for our team (which is very un-Belgian). In the end Belgium loses 2-0 after a very entertaining match. Still most supporters are proud and a little bit disappointed. Proud because we played very well and showed the world that the belgians can play beautiful football. Disappointed because we were the better team and with a little luck we could have won. This match will be a hot topic in our cafes for years to come, that much is for sure.
