During the period known as the Maya civilisation, c. 1000 BC to ad 1500), archaeologists estimate that at their peak, 1 to 2 million native Americans lived within the borders of present day Belize. Mighty cities such as Caracol and Lamanai dotted the landscape, with small agricultural communities farming the land between.
No one knows for certain what caused the disappearance of the Maya, although war, famine and a series of natural disasters were all possible factors. The first European settlers were English Puritans in the 16th century, who set up trading posts along the coast. Logging became the main occupation.
During the 1840's Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of British Honduras and the settlers began to marry freed Creole slaves forming the Creole majority that is still is dominant within the population. In 1973 the colony's name was changed from British Honduras to Belize and on September 21st 1981 Belizean independence was declared. back Section Menu:

History and Government
History: The region was at the heart of the Mayan empire (circa AD 300 to AD 800) which subsequently migrated to Yucatán. The country's modern history really begins when Belize, formerly British Honduras, was occupied by the British in 1638-40, with settlements spreading as woodcutting became profitable. By the end of the 18th century, Africans were brought in as slaves to cut the mahogany. Despite attacks from the Spanish, the settlers remained, although it was not until 1862 that the territory was recognised as a British colony.
The country achieved internal self-government in 1964. Elections in 1965 brought the leader of the People's United Party (PUP), George Price, to power. A bicameral legislature was then introduced. The PUP won every election held subsequently until 1984, when the United Democratic Party (UDP) took power for the first time. The new government remained committed to the mainstays of Belizean policy: growth through foreign investment, membership of CARICOM (the Caribbean Common Market) and a settlement of the long-running dispute with neighbouring Guatemala. Price was returned to office in September 1989.
Tensions have long existed between Belize and Guatemala because, even though the boundary between them was determined in 1859, Guatemala continued to claim sovereignty of Belize. Throughout the 1970s, British troops were sent over in response to Guatemalan hostility. As a result of negotiations, Britain agreed to grant Belize independence in 1981. However, the new Guatemalan President, Jorge Serrano, who took office in January 1991, declared his government's urgent desire to reach a settlement. An agreement was duly reached in September 1991 (including the establishment of diplomatic relations) under which Guatemala recognised Belizean sovereignty (although it maintains its territorial claim) in exchange for access to Belizean ports. In May 1993, the British garrison withdrew. Shortly afterwards, Premier George Price called a snap election. Despite expectations, his PUP was narrowly defeated by Manuel Esquival, the new leader of the UDP.

    History
Basic Facts Introduction. Two themes dominate the history of Belize:
  • the outward struggle to establish and maintain an English-speaking nation in an area dominated by Hispanic peoples and culture, and the inward interaction between groups of different races and cultural backgrounds.
  • Understanding contemporary social relations and the politics of Belize depends on understanding these diverse groups and their interpretations of past events. Like many nations that have recently emerged from colonialism, Belize has a population that is fragmented into many racial and cultural groups. These groups all have different interpretations of key events in Belize's history. The subjugation of the indigenous people, the rivalry between Spain and Britain, slavery and the process of emancipation, the legacy of colonization, and the position of Belize in the modern world have all been subject to reinterpretation and debate. Despite the gradual emergence of a national identity, the differences among ethnic groups and their divergent outlooks on the present and the past play an important role in Belize today. Mestizos (of mixed Maya Indian and European ancestry) are the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than two-fifths of the population. English-speaking people of largely African and African-European ancestry, who are called Creoles, account for nearly one-third of the population and predominate in the central coastal regions. Mestizos predominate in the more sparsely inhabited interior, along with the Maya, who account for one-ninth of the population. Several thousand Garifuna, formerly called Black Caribs, who are descendants of the Carib Indians and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in the 18th century, live in communities on the south coast. People of European and East Indian ancestry are also present, as are smaller numbers of Chinese, Arabs, and others.

    77. Belize Audubon Society - History
The belize Audubon Society (BAS) is a nonprofit, non-government, membership organization, dedicated to the promotion of the SHORT history OF THE SOCIETY.
    http://www.belizeaudubon.org/html/history.html
The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) is a non-profit, non-government, membership organization, dedicated to the promotion of the sustainable use and preservation of our natural resources in order to maintain a balance between people and the environment. SHORT HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY The BAS was formed in 1969 as a foreign chapter of the Florida Audubon Society. In 1973, BAS became a completely independent organization, and was registered as a limited liability company in February 1991. The approach to conservation used by BAS started out by using the appreciation for birds as the focal point for changing attitudes. Today, with a tremendously increased portfolio BAS continues its principle of promoting the protection of Belize's rich biodiversity in a very interdisciplinary approach. The BAS has been working for the past 26 years to conserve Belize's biodiversity, by gathering support for the respect of nature and people and for environmentally responsible attitudes through its complementary programs : Protected Areas, Environmental Education, and Advocacy. Apart from these three programs, BAS has been gathering support through a variety of instruments such as setting up of local Audubon chapters in the country, and through its membership scheme ( both in Belize and abroad). MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES The BAS manages 1 natural monument, 2 wildlife sanctuaries, 2 national parks, and 1 nature reserve as part of a management contract with the Government of Belize (GOB). BAS also manages a private nature reserve. The total extension of these seven areas is approximately 150,000 acres. With the exception of the nature reserves, the protected areas provide a variety of recreational and educational opportunities. In 1995, about 24,000 visitors were registered at 5 of the protected areas.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning HISTORY OF BELIZE The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites, notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich, reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Another influence that the Garifuna had in their defining lines of their culture was the obvious influence of the French during the beginning stages of colonial development in the New World. It was during this time that French missionaries were exploring the region of the Caribbean and teaching the Island Caribs many words of their native tongue, including the use of French numbers and counting systems. Certain expressions were than fused with the Arawak language that the Island Caribs were speaking. This created the Garifuna language that can still be heard counting in French today (Global Neighbors: Garifuna history, 1).
All of these things combined have provided a brief understanding of who the Garifuna are, and where they come from. Furthermore, it has become apparent through reference points to other cultures and more in-depth studies of the Garifuna that their roots were cultivated in many places around the globe. For example, the traditions of their music dance, religious rites, and rituals are all very much seeded in their link to their African ancestry. While the Garinagu forms of subsistence, on the other hand, are more associated with their Island Carib ancestors. Even the European settlers of the New World had a very profound effect on the development of the Garifuna culture. The same culture that is characterized by the blending of distant pieces of worldly influences, driven by the human intuition to survive, and fueled by the desire for freedom.
