13 Symptoms of Peace Corps Withdrawal
Produced by Jake Warga Real Audio or A Note From Jay Allison Jake Warga has made three radio pieces in his life... #1 " When Brian Took His Life Street Dogs " with Matt Perry , and this one, #3 "Home From Africa: 13 Symptoms of Peace Corps Withdrawal." We're partial to Jake's work. Not just because he's got good story sense, snappy rhythm, and rare sensibility... but also, in a fit of our own self-centeredness, because he got some of his chops from resources at Transom.org. This piece is filled with surprising heart and thought. Jake will give you the background... From Jake Warga Intro
One of the most amazing moments in my life was sitting in a small house in a mud village in West Africa. No electricity. The night incredibly hot. The crickets deafening. The only illumination coming from an oil lanternand a little red blinking light from my audio recorder as it, and I, listened to the person who lived in this house in Benin: Jenafir.
  • Photos from Jake Warga's Trip to Benin Chronology
It started with a fun idea: record my college friend before she left for the Peace Corps, ask her what she expects, then give her the tape on her return 2+ years later. It grew from there.

I teach classes in the history, archaeology, and culture of Africa, and in comparative world civilizations. My research and teaching are interdisciplinary, intersecting the traditional boundaries of history, archaeology, and anthropology. Convinced that the historical experience of Africa can be assessed from diverse sources, my pursuit of interdisciplinary approach to cultural historical analysis makes me aware of the many theatres in which history has been and is being produced, (re)enacted, and lived. Research
I have conducted research in Nigeria (West Africa), Ethiopia (East Africa), and the United States. In these regions, I have collaborated (Ethiopia and U.S.A.) and initiated (Nigeria) projects on different aspects of African cultural history stretching as far back as 100 A.D. in the case of Aksumite Civilization in Ethiopia, 1200 A.D. for Yoruba civilization in West Africa, and as recent as early 19th century in the case of urban African-American culture in Boston (USA). The cultural history of Yoruba-Edo region in Nigeria has been the main focus of my research since 1990. The major theme of my research is the articulation of local historical experience in regional and global contexts. I am interested in how historical communities, peoples, and cultural ecumenes responded to, manipulated, and became part of regional and global historical processes (e.g, the Atlantic economy). I am also interested in how the cultural institutions and daily lives of African societies have been transformed as a result of these global/regional encounters. Within the framework of globa/regional/local intersections, my archaeological-historical research has focused on topics such as migrations, inter-group relations, ethnogenesis, political formation, material culture, and origins and transformations of cultural institutions.

Voodoo Lives on in West Africa
By HOWARD W. FRENCH UIDAH, Benin There are no factory whistles to compete with the church bells or the muezzin's call to prayer in this sun-battered town that resembles so many other forgotten stops along the West African coast. So few cars move about that schoolchildren think nothing of strolling down the middle of its sandy streets. If it were not for the small whitewashed Portuguese fort that nowadays serves as a museum to a trade in humans that in the last century made this town the capital of what Europeans called the Slave Coast, at first glance little would give away Ouidah's place in history. But at the price of 1.5 million souls tallied by slavers as "pieces of ebony" and shipped from here in bondage, perhaps no place in Africa has exported so much to the culture of the United States and much of the rest of the Western Hemisphere. From Creole New Orleans to the swamplands of Florida, from Baptist church shouts to blues lyrics, talk of hoodoo and mojo references to Ouidah's ancient religion, Vodoun has sprinkled American life. Ouidah's influence extends even further, to places like Trinidad, Brazil and Cuba, where African-inspired religions like Santeria and Candomble trace many of their roots straight to here.

The youth should, as of now, manifest their role of co-authors of the Present and owners of the Future, through a resolute engagement in the fight against AIDS, a disease whose consequences on the development prospects of Africa have long been established. To that effect, the creation of a network through concrete projects is nothing short of a necessity. "No dreams can be made true outside of Action". What is the situation?
