Bermuda private dwelling homes are basically English cottages, built by the original settlers and adapted to the specific and unique conditions existing in Bermuda. The architecture, British, not island Bermudian, has been perfected for local conditions by Bermudians. Architects in Bermuda must be registered under the Architects Registration Act 1969. On January 19, 2001, 65 architects were registered in the Official Gazette. Legislation protects 800 historically important buildings built of Bermuda stone from 1619. There are many handsome examples of stately 17th and 18th century homes. They must be white roofed and painted in pastel hues, with paint and sealer approved by the Chief Medical Officer of the Bermuda Government. Once - but no longer - most buildings in Bermuda were made inside and out of native coral limestone sawn from the ground, from a quarry. No other building material was available for over 350 years. It was also used for internal walls because local cedar and palmetto roofs could not withstand mid Atlantic storms. The roofs were made of inch thick local shingle limestone slates and laid on over cedar beams. They were - and still are - in terraced layers to make rain water fall into a water tank built underground but as part of the house and its foundations.

In honour of African American artist Elizabeth Catlett winning the International Sculpture Centre's 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award on April 24. ELIZABETH CATLETT: Sculpting the Truth
Award winning African-American Artists Series film hosted by Faith Ringgold, created and produced by Linda Freeman. 28 minutes. Elizabeth Catlett sculpts the truth from wood, stone, terra cotta, and the people she knows... mothers, workers, children. Her inspiration comes from women, because, as she says, "women have to try a little harder." Her work is technically flawless, and artistically brilliant. Against all odds, Elizabeth Catlett has found a place of prominence in the pantheon of African-American artists. This film provides an intimate and personal look at both the artist's life and work and shows Catlett working in her own studio.

BERMUDA UNLIKELY TO FOLLOW UK'S LEAD ON CANNABIS LAW
BRITAIN moved closer to ease rules on cannabis yesterday but a drug abuse treatment expert said the same thing would not be acceptable in Bermuda, though the island's top police officer and a Government MP said there was scope for debate. And the woman in charge of the National Drug Commission warned that if laws on cannabis were softened here, many young people would misread it as legalisation. A report published in Britain yesterday, which drew on input from politicians, medical experts and police, urged the UK Government to relax rules on cannabis and ecstasy and to follow Dutch and Swiss models by offering heroin addicts safe fixes in "injecting rooms". Government backbencher Dale Butler opposed any softening of drug laws, but conceded that the current approach was not winning the war against drugs and the public should decide if they wanted changes through a referendum.

A t first glance it might appear the art world here is so small that the entire picture could be set in a modest frame. But several Bermudian artists have established reputations abroad, and their push for excellence and recognition serves as an inspiration to our dancers and musicians. Almost quietly, many are carving local niches as a springboard for jumping "the pond" local vernacular for the surrounding ocean. The rivalry within the Bermuda art community is strong, creating both an upside and downside. Competition is keen, but, says one dance school head, the student community is often deprived of the kind of exchange that allows them to learn from each other. Art galleries and studios are generally owned and run by artists who use them to promote their own works. Often the gallery or studio is a room or two in the artist's home. Three artists who have carved solid reputations with their art are Bruce Stuart, president of the Bermuda Society of Arts; Elizabeth Mulderig whose "onion" paintings of famous Bermudians are on exhibit at the Masterworks Gallery in Somerset; and Graham Foster whose interpretation of the ubiquitous Bermudian home is refreshingly unique. Each year most arts organizations have a major exhibition or performance, allowing established and new talent a showcase opportunity. In this chapter we have organized local art and artists under the following categories: Music and Dance, Theater, Arts Centers and Museums, Galleries and Studios, Literary Arts and Arts Organizations. We'll bring you up to date with recent performances or exhibitions. Please note that several theater groups and organizations do not have a formal location, and telephone numbers may sometimes be a home or office number for a contact person. There may be some difficulty in getting through to someone who may be able to immediately provide information. But don't despair.

Astwood Hall, Church Street, Hamilton
Entering its 6th year, the academy offers instruction in conducting, composition, voice, and a wide range of instruments. Principal Graham Garton, GRSM, LRAM, ARCO, ARAM, also conducts the Bermuda Philharmonic Society and the Bermuda Chamber Choir. Bermuda Conservatory of Music
Colony Club, Trott Rd., Hamilton
Formed by the 1997 merger of two leading music schools, the Bermuda Conservatory of Music is now the largest such school on the island. The union brought together a 12-member faculty that offers instruction in piano, violin, organ, viola and guitar. Accredited by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music of London, and the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, the school offers students access to further development in either the United Kingdom or North America. Of several programs offered, one is directed at students as young as 9 months through a Mommy and Me program that owes much to the Suzuki method of immersion. This approach, developed by Japanese music educator Suzuki Shin'ichi, is based on his observations of young children's natural acquisition of language skills. Early musical training, without the use of written music, is supported by parental participation. This approach has achieved tremendous popularity and success and has been adopted in many locales worldwide. The school's Kindermusik program for ages 4 to 8 allows a group experience to branch into individual preferences, as youngsters develop a leaning toward a favored instrument. However, the 800-strong student body is composed not only of youngsters, but also adults, a few of whom are at the so-called retirement age.

By Patricia Horn, Knight Ridder Newspapers
(Business from 2000-04-28 Edition)
WITH A cell phone glued to her ear, Deirdre — as she announced herself to a succession of people she was calling — sat in the crowded airport, conversing, loudly, about her day-care troubles, her family and the removal of her mother’s right ovary.
For those sitting near her, there was no way to ignore this modern-day scourge: the public cell-phone yapper who reveals private matters to an audience of unwilling listeners.
When someone nearby finally asked her to take her next private conversation elsewhere, it was Deirdre who was offended: “That’s the rudest thing I’ve ever heard.’’
The matter of who is being rude as cell-phone users yak away in public has opened a national discourse over cell-phone etiquette — or lack thereof. In a continuing Web poll, restaurant reviewer Zagat Survey L.L.C. has received passionate responses on the issue of diners’ cell-phone use.
“I would like to start smoking again so I could blow smoke at people talking on cell phones,’’ one respondent wrote.

Class reduction should have been `phased in'
By Matthew Taylor, GazetteNET News, 29 March 2000. Opposition leader Pamela Gordon has accused the Government of rushing into reducing class sizes to 15. The problem of parents fiddling forms to maximise their chances of finding a good school could be eliminated if Government identified schools which needed to be brought up to scratch.

Scottish Opera's most travelled ambassador, SOFA has visited Barbados, Singapore, Ireland, Finland and Portugal and currently leads a coalition of opera house educators, national arts organisations and local government education departments from five European countries, developing the relationship between the arts and education. From Turandot to tourism
Built around this concert of opera highlights and Gala Night in Bermuda will be a specially packaged 'Weekend of Opera' which it's hoped will attract many visitors to the island.
