Geography of the Bermuda Triangle The Bermuda Triangle lies vaguely east of Florida. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Miami are said to be the "points" of this legendary triangle. However, the U.S. government denies the existence of these borders. Many "phenomena" enthusiasts claim that the triangle is not truly a triangle but a general area of water found east and southeast of North America. In any event, the geography of the area is awe-inspiring and deeply misunderstood. The humid subtropical climate of the region brings with it heavy rainfall and high temperatures. An annual rainfall in excess of 60 inches (152 cm) can be expected. Though much this rainfall is mostly spread evenly through the year, hurricanes and harsh thunderstorms occasionally drop 10 inches of rain within hours. This area is well known by geographers for the sudden nature of its storms. There have been many reports of complete whiteouts being formed in seconds. Waterspouts and extremely strong winds are dangerous elements that often accompany these storms The topography of the ocean floor bottom is surprising to many that sail the area. It is commonly believed that this whole area is very shallow. This is true near to the Florida coastline, but as the North Atlantic Continental Shelf breaks off only miles away, depths quickly reach as low as 12,000 feet. About 100 miles north of Puerto Rico is the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Puerto Rico Trench, estimated at 30,000 feet deep! The Florida Straits within this area are approximately 5000 feet deep. While people snorkel in the water only a few hundred feet deep near the coasts of the islands and Florida and ships can be seen sunk in the clear blue waters, this area is incredibly deceptive. To this day, the ocean floor of this area

Introduction
This unit was developed at San Diego State University in EDTEC 596 , Interdisciplinary Teaching with Technology, Bernie Dodge , Instructor. Radio tower operators knew something was terribly wrong when Flight 19, pilot Lt.C.C. Taylor frantically radioed on a clear day, "We seem to be lost..." The Bermuda Triangle has served as a source of mystery, intrigue, and debate since Christopher Columbus passed through the area in the late 15th century. This unit uncovers the history and mystery surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. You and your students are about to embark on your own journey through this area known as the "Devil's Triangle." Upon completion of your journey, your class should have developed their own ideas and will have the opportunity to debate the truth about these mysterious waters.
Content Areas and Grades
This interdisciplinary unit covers the contents: math, science, language arts, and social science. The material is suitable for seventh and eighth grade levels. The unit touches upon many learning styles with particular emphasis on hands-on discovery.
Curriculum Standards
Students will uncover the history and myths surrounding the legendary Bermuda Triangle. Students will develop their writing skills based on the information they obtain from the unit. Tourism to the island to escape North American winters first developed in Victorian times. Tourism continues to be important to the island's economy, although international business has overtaken it in recent years. Bermuda has developed into a highly successful offshore financial center. I wanted to get off this extra log before leaving tomorrow morning. The weather has settled down and the heavy weather predicted did not really materialize. Oh well, we should have a good crossing. We plan to go the northern route (ie. up to 40 north then across) as the winds are supposed to be better at this time with a marginally better chance, though, of gales and icebergs. We could actually leave today, but there is a "potluck supper" planned for tonight across on Hen Island. So we will stay for it. We plan to clear customs tonight, and when we get back from the potluck we will bring the dinghy on board, lash everything down, and be prepared for sea so we can leave first thing in the morning. There will be several boats leaving around the same time, though some are leaving today.
Yesterday we went up to the " Bermuda Harbour Radio " station high up on a hill overlooking St. George's. It is a modern communications and rescue centre facility built on old Fort George, complete with two large 11 inch Rifled Muzzle Loader cannon, outside a 50-foot deep dry, rectangular moat. The station was atop the "keep" overlooking St George's, with only a narrow walkway crossing the moat for access. We enjoyed the visit. The station had sophisticated radars, radios, satellite communications and other modern technology. The radars could track vessels approaching Bermuda and when noted would automatically calculate range, bearing, course, speed, and latitude and longitude. Any radio transmissions could also be triangulated from two other receivers and the latitude and longitude immediately determined as well.

History, Political Structure and Law
The Islands were discovered by the Spanish seafarer Bermudes in 1522. Bermuda today remains the oldest British colony. An appointed Governor represents the power of the Crown. However, Bermuda has been self-governing with respect to its own affairs for over 300 years, while defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of Britain. At the same time because of its strategic location in the North Atlantic (being much further north than is commonly believed and considerably closer to New York and Boston than the Caribbean) Bermuda benefits from being under the US defence umbrella. A locally elected House of Assembly governs Bermuda. The legal system is based on English Common law, modified and supplemented by Acts passed under the Bermuda Constitutional Order, 1968.
