Ecology - Biodiversity Return to Ecology Main Page Buy Books about Biodiversity Biodiversity is the study of the diversity of life on earth. This definition is so broad it could encompass just about any aspect of biology. Biodiversity, however, is generally recognized as having three important components: Species Diversity - The numbers and relative abundances of species in a defined region. Habitats or Ecosystems - The range, composition, and species diversity of different plant and animal communities. Genetic Diversity - The genetic variability of individual species. Different scientists view biodiversity in different ways. One may be interested in simply describing the diversity of plant and animal species. This is the domain of systematics. Other individuals may be intent on finding the causes of diversity and explaining the differences in diversity between different regions of the world. Ecologists and Evolutionary Biologists fall into this category. A third group of individuals and organizations is primarily interested in preserving the Earth's diversity; conservationists. Of course there are no clear lines between these three groups. Systematists are also interested in explaining diversity as well as describing it, and conservationists must (by definition) also have an interest in, and knowledge of, systematics, ecology, and evolution. In addition the science of biogeography is closely tangled up in biodiversity and the two cannot be easily separated. Therefore many of the subject areas of this biodiversity segment of

Ecology - Biodiversity - General Biodiversity Return to Biodiversity Main Page Buy Books about Biodiversity Biodiversity: Measuring the Variety of Nature . Natural History Museum (London). A tremendous site on biodiversity. Among the topics covered are different ways of measuring and mapping biodiversity, the concepts of rarity and endemism, conservation priority and Gap Analysis, biogeography, their mapping software called "WorldMap", references and links to related biodiversity sites. Highly recommended. Biodiversity and Conservation . Peter J. Bryant, University of California at Irvine. A wonderful resource for the study of biodiversity and conservation in the form of an online manual. The manual is divided into a number of chapters including an introduction, extinction and over-exploitation, whaling and fishing, global patterns of biodiversity, values of biodiversity, endangered species protection, deforestation, endangered habitats, pollution, and more. Highly recommended. California Biodiversity Council . This web site is deceptive. It has a short page on biodiversity and its value. However it has a tremendous set of resources for teachers on biodiversity. There is a news letter on the conservation of biodiversity in California. The gold nugget, however, is found if you click on biodiversity and bioregions. Within this segment of the site, if you keep clicking, is a wealth of maps and information on the ecoregions of California, their environment and vegatation, sometimes down to very local area. Highly recommended.

This research cluster is developed around a group of researchers who are focussed on understanding the diversity and dynamics of the native biota of Australia. Although different researchers focus on different organisms, there is a common thread in their research in developing an understanding of Australian species that live or have lived in the Australian environment Our work includes investigation of the basic ecology, behaviour and evolution of a diverse range of species in the Australian biota. We are involved in biodiversity surveys of natural and disturbed habitats, conservation ecology and ecosystem management, and the interpretation of past and present ecosystems for the development of ecotourism. This service provides networked access to the BIOSIS Previews database, which is the electronic version of Biological Abstracts, the largest printed reference publication for life sciences research information, and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews, Meetings), the companion printed reference to books, meetings, and research reviews. Thousands of life science journals, as well as international meetings and books from more than 90 countries, are monitored for inclusion in BIOSIS Previews. The database contains bibliographic information from 1985 onwards for traditional areas of biology such as botany, zoology, and microbiology, as well as related fields such as agriculture, pharmacology, biophysics, ecology, bioengineering, and experimental clinical medicine. This book is the study of microorganisms from extreme environments, and it provides a much-needed synthesis of the recent advances in the biology, biotechnology, and management of thermophilic organisms, with specific examples drawn largely from thermal springs in Yellowstone National Park. The work addresses the issues of intellectual property rights with regard to the search for novel microorganisms as sources for pharmaceuticals, and the molecular tools currently used to address microbial diversity, containing how-to sections for all professionals in ecology and conservation.
