White, Spring 1999 hen he here are a few surviving accounts of the founding of the Order, from William, Archbishop of Tyre (d. 1186), Michael the Syrian, the Patriarch of Antioch (d. 1199) and Walter Map, Archdeacon of Oxford (d 1208-10). Of the three, William is probably the most accurate with Michael the Syrian a close second, while Walter Map seemed more devoted to telling a good story rather than an accurate one. illiam wrote that in 1118, a number of noble men including Hugh took vows from the Patriarch of Jerusalem. They decided that their main duty, for the remission of their sins, was to "maintain, as far as they could, the roads and highways against the ambushes of thieves and attackers, especially in regard to the safety of pilgrims." Michael the Syrian gives the number of original Templars to be thirty, not including Hugh, and relates that it was Baldwin who convinced them to become knights instead of monks. Walter Map wrote a short story about a Burgundian knight named Paganus who took it upon himself to protect the pilgrims. When the enemy's numbers became too great, Paganus secured a hall from the canons and began to recruit more knights. (Barber, 6-7)

He was entered at King's College, Cambridge, though he seems never to have taken a degree and he was a member of Gray's Inn in the last year of King Edward VI During Queen Mary 's reign, he took refuge abroad, as did many other zealous Protestants and, during his exile, he became an accomplished linguist and student of human nature. From the accession of Elizabeth I , when he returned to England, he became a zealous member of the House of Commons and was able, through his foreign correspondents, to keep Cecil informed of many important events on the Continent. He was employed upon several diplomatic missions by Elizabeth. In particular, he negotiated the Treaty of Blois with France, in 1572, and was in Paris as ambassador at the date of the massacre of St. Bartholomew. But none of his missions were crowned with special success because his outspoken Protestant zeal led him to undervalue the results obtained by the Queen's policy of vacillation. He never ceased to remonstrate with her on this subject and one is surprised when one reads the remonstrances which she tolerated from his pen.

This page describes all my favourites my favourite royalty in history links my favourite books and my favourite royal in history: Eleanor of Aquitaine My favourite royal in history: Eleanor of Aquitaine (~1122-1204) Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine was an intelligent and emancipated woman living in the dark middle ages. Although it is a conventional rule that all ladies of high rank should be described as beautiful, all sources agree that Eleanor of Aquitaine really was beautiful. In addition, she was the richest heiress of France and became successively Queen of France and England. her daughter Aenor married to his eldest son William X (1099-1137) in 1121. They had two daughters, Eleanor and Petronilla, and a son, William Aigret. Eleanor resembled both William IX and Dangereuse; she possessed the same intelligence, gaiety, restlessness and will power. The court of William IX was the centre of western European culture: the ducal family was entertained by jongleurs, storytellers and troubadours. Unlike most of her contemporaries, male and especially female, Eleanor was carefully educated and she was an excellent student. Eleanor's happy childhood ended with the subsequent deaths of her mother, her little brother and - in 1137 - her father. The orphaned Eleanor was the richest heiress in France thus a marriage was arranged for her to its King, Louis VII (1121-1180). Louis had been brought up for an office in the church, but he had become heir to the French throne after the death of his elder brother. He was a weak, dull, grave and pious man and he and the lively Eleanor were ill matched. Louis never understood his young wife, but he appears to have adored her with a passionate admiration. It wasn't until 1145 that a daughter, Marie, was born. Meanwhile, Eleanor was eager to govern her own duchy, since she knew the troublesome Aquitainians better than anyone. However, Louis' councillor, the Abbot Sugar, resented female influence in governmental matters.

An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. Benjamin Banneker Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery. Sojourner Truth Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.
