Course Description This course is designed to help educators understand how technology can strengthen science learning. It is geared toward the use of the Internet and Internet delivered simulations. This program will create proficient and avid users of Internet based science simulations and provide them with the tools and techniques necessary to successfully apply new methods in teaching science.
Through this course educators will learn how to implement technology, through LOGAL simulations, into the science curriculum. Two kinds of simulations will be used:
  • Simulations based on mathematical modeling: Introductory level activities (Science Gateways) and advanced placement activities (Science Explorer) in biology, physiology, chemistry and physics will be examined. Simulations based on real-time or historical data available on the Web: The course will help educators and students visualize and analyze available "Internet" data.

Guidelines on Sponsorship
The major aim of the IUBMB Committee on Education is to enhance and improve the knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology and the technical skills essential for good research amongst biochemists and molecular biologists, and the educational skills of those whose responsibility it is to teach these subjects at university or college level. The Committee's major focus is those areas where biochemistry and molecular biology are not as yet well developed. To this end, the Committee sponsors, organizes or helps to organize, Courses, Laboratory or Educational Workshops, Symposia or other activities such as provision of books and other scientific literature deemed of value for the purpose of teaching and learning. The Committee firmly believes that it can best achieve this aim, in view of its limited resources, by a policy of cost-sharing with the local organizers of activities it sponsors or that it helps organize.
APPLICATIONS
Applications for sponsorship, for help in organizing activities, or for provision of scientific literature, should be directed to the Chair of the Executive Committee.

Biographical Information
I have been teaching at the same school for six years now. I teach 7th grade Social Studies and Science. Originally, I planned on becoming a lawyer but plans changed after leaving D.C. as an intern and going to NY for a week to visit my cousin. It was there that he inspired me to become a teacher. Each day I would read to him, take him to school and participate in his school activities, which really changed me. I have been blessed with a wonderful family. My dad (who plays golf with me), mom and my brother – Mark are close knit. In my pastime, I love to travel. I have been to countries like Japan, Malaysia, Singapore (I’m originally from here), Thailand, Nepal, Mexico, China and Canada. I even lived in Mexico for 4 months as a missionary. I can still speak a bit of Spanish if given the opportunity. So here’s a bit about me!

Biographical Information
I was born in Dothan, Alabama. I graduated in 1990 from Northview High School. I attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL, where I received my B.S. in science.
I have been teaching for (4) years. I teach Biology (10th grade). I always tell people that I believe teaching is a gift from God. My major in college was Biology/Pre-Nursing. I went through one year of Nursing school at the University of Alabama and decided that nursing was not for me. Teaching to me is very rewarding. It makes me feel so happy when my students grasp a concept or even when they come back after they have left my class and tell me that I have inspired them. I try to relate to my students and also get to know them outside of the classroom. This makes them fell as though you care about them.
My favorite pastimes are reading, spending time with my family, and surfing the Internet. I like to travel and spend time visiting friends, also.

VIGRE INTEGRATED WORKING GROUPS
Fall, 2002

As their name implies, Integrated Working Groups are comprised of faculty, postdocs, graduate students (and possibly undergrads) working together in a common area.
Several such groups are planned to run in Fall, 2002. All interested students, postdocs and senior faculty including those not supported from the VIGRE grant are most welcome to participate in these activities!
VIGRE-supported Graduate Students should note that participation in such a group can fulfill the first year Apprenticeship requirement and possibly the advanced year requirement as well.
The following paragraphs describe the plans for the working groups, as well as the pre-requisites they presume. If you are interested in taking part in one of them, please contact the organizer.
WORKING GROUP IN MATHEMATICAL FLUID DYNAMICS: BOUNDS ON FLOW QUANTITIES
Scientific scope: In depth discussion of methods for deriving mathematically rigorous estimates of physically relevant quantites for turbulent fluid flows in incompressible Newtonian fluids. Mathematical methods include techniques from functional analysis, differential equations, asymptotic analysis, and computational and numerical analysis. Structure and goals: The group meets in a well-boarded classroom 5-7pm one day (probably Wednesday) every week or two. One participant makes a (chalk) presentation of a current problem in the active research area of bounds on flow quantities, with all details and background as requested by the other participants. A participant may lead successive meetings until everyone agrees to change topics. This is not just a research seminar, but rather a more pedagogical forum to teach each other about what we can do, what we might want to do, and figure out how we might help each other perform research in this area.

INTER-GRADE or INTER-SCHOOL HUMMINGBIRD ACTIVITIES
Often, some of the best teachers of students are the students themselves. Peer mentoring is a very successful learning tool in many situations, and Inter-Grade or Inter-School Activities are ventures that capitalize on cooperative learning among and between students. Inter-Grade or Inter-School Activities typically occur between grade levels in a given school or between two nearby schools with different grade levels. Through Operation RubyThroat , we envision several kinds of scenarios, a few of which are outlined below. For help on setting up your specific hummingbird inter-grade or inter-school activities, contact projects@rubythroat.org NOTE: Teachers and their student groups, individual students, and others who are registered participants with Operation RubyThroat get priority attention to all requests for information and assistance. The heart of this module is the set of five activities that follow. These activities are the vehicles that we hope will carry important concepts related to cancer and personal and public health to your students. To review the concepts in detail, refer to Figure 11 in Implementing the Module As you scan the activities, you will find that each contains several major features. At a Glance gives you a convenient overview of the activity.
  • The Focus provides a one-to-two-sentence summary of what students do. Major Concepts states the central idea(s) the activity is designed to convey. Objectives lists three to five specific understandings or abilities students should have after completing the activity. Prerequisite Knowledge alerts you to the understandings and skills students should have before beginning the activity. The Basic Science-Public Health Connection describes how the activity illustrates the relationship between basic science and personal and public health. The mission of the NIH is to “uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone.” This mission statement recognizes that basic science and personal and public health are not separate issues; they are not even two sides of one issue (Figure 16). Rather, they are inextricably linked and form a powerful whole: Research into the basic processes of life leads inevitably to strategies for improving health, and questions about health trigger research into basic processes.
