  • Spiders: An Organism for Teaching Biology (by Debora Scheidemantel)
Students explore basic ecology concepts and scientific processes using spiders as model organisms. They will capture spiders, observe and care for them, and use them to answer their own questions about spider behavior. Modeling the process of a research scientist, each team of students will design and conduct their own experiment. Simultaneously, the class will collaborate on joint projects investigating feeding rates of spiders and their importance in controlling the numbers of insects (by conducting a field study on or near school grounds). Designed for both middle and high school students
    The Behavior of Ants
    (by David Shindelman)
Middle school students will use the steps of the Scientific Method to independently develop and test their own ideas through experimentation with ants. Students will take part in a four-part study of the behavior of ants.

I definitely recommend this program to any ASU student. It has been a priceless experience for me . . . GPH 484 intern This is a great program and I wish more students at ASU would participate in it, especially if they're considering working with children in any way in the future. The service we provide to the community through this program is only surpassed by what we as interns gain in knowledge and experience . . . PLB 484 intern Service learning is a one of a kind learning experience. . . . It made me a more responsible person. . . . It’s not just good for people who want to be teachers; it’s an enriching experience for everyone participating. We learn leadership and teamwork skills through actual training in a classroom environment. . . . PHS 484 intern Service Learning Program

The Story of Science Connection
Science Connection was founded in 1991 by Robert West, then an Undergraduate Biology Research Program student at The University of Arizona. Science Connectors are primarily undergraduate students who visit classrooms, elementary through high school, to do hands-on science activities in the Tucson metropolitan area. Undergraduates join Science Connectors because they enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for science and scientific inquiry with children.
While Science Connectors love science, not all Science Connectors are science majors. The majors of undergraduates in Science Connection have included anthropology, biochemistry, chemistry, ecology and evolutionary biology, economics, education, exercise and sport sciences, general biology, interdisciplinary studies, Latin American studies, linguistics, mathematics, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, nutritional sciences, philosophy, physics, physiology, pre-education, pre-nursing, psychology, and veterinarian sciences. In addition, graduate students and faculty participate in the Science Connection volunteer program. Science Connectors are catalysts, resource persons, role models, and mentors. They share their joy of scientific discovery with young minds. Working independently and with guidance from Dr. Gail Burd, the Director of Science Connection, and with the classroom teacher, Science Connectors develop hands-on activities in a wide range of scientific disciplines. Activities performed by Science Connectors range from astronomy to zoology; many of these activities appear under

Students are bored by science, right?
"My students love science," said Gina O'Bryan, a sixth-grade teacher at Eagle Rock Elementary School. "They see how excited I get, and by the end of the year, several of them want to be marine biologists."
"Science is my favorite subject to teach; the kids respond so well and love all the hands-on experiments," said Mary Sigala, a fifth-grade teacher at Evergreen Avenue Elementary School.
"The kids like coming to class, and when students are motivated, teachers have fewer discipline problems," said Stacy Sinclair, a teacher who just left the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies for a research associate position with UCLA's Marine Science Center.
How did these teachers learned to make science so compelling to their students?
O'Bryan and Sigala are among more than 50 teachers from Los Angeles County schools participating in a nine-month marine science training program at UCLA designed to increase students' interest in the sciences.
The program - called "Science Standards with Integrative Marine Science" (SSWIMS), which was awarded a four-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation - is motivating the teachers, who then motivate their students.

lab program Biology: Exploring Life In the Teacher's Edition the authors lay out a suggested order for working through a Biology: Exploring Life chapter: engage the students' interest in the chapter's topic with the WebQuest, then have students read each key concept in the text, go online to complete the activities, and end by assigning the Online Chapter Assessment. Another way to describe this is that we expect students will READ about a concept in the book and then go online to DO an activity to reinforce that understanding. We know that teachers will need to adapt Biology: Exploring Life Each chapter begins with a WebQuest. These are short (20-25 minute) activities that can be used to jumpstart the chapter and motivate the students' interest in the material to come. WebQuests are really online scavenger hunts. Students are given the necessary background on a topic and are then sent to four or five reputable, external Web sites to gather information to help them complete a brief activity. Following the WebQuest, students can begin working through the chapter's core activities. There is one Online Activity for every concept in the program. On average, there are five to six concepts per chapter. With 36

Project AstroBio
A STELLAR OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHERS
What is Project AstroBio? In this innovative program twenty-five 3rd - 12th grade teachers from the Puget Sound region are paired each year with volunteer astronomers and other scientists who have an interest in working with local schools and organizations. Together, teachers and partner scientists participate in a hands-on training workshop, receive high quality resource materials, and develop a strategy for working together in and out of the classroom. There are a total of 68 Project AstroBio partnerships, from Everett to Olympia! "Classic" Project Astro, which began in Seattle in 1997, has become Project AstroBio as of 2002, to reflect a new and growing involvement in the sciences of astrobiology, which is the study of the origin, history, and extremes of life on Earth, as well as the possibility of life on other planets. Whereas in past years Project Astro teachers were paired solely with amateur, student, and professional astronomers, Project AstroBio teachers now may be paired with either astronomers or with scientists with more of a biology background. The range of science that can be done by hands-on activities now includes not only astronomy and related sciences, but also aspects of life in the universe. Partnerships involve more than just one-time visits:
Scientists and teachers commit to at least five school year visits. These may include hands-on activities, evening star parties, creating or assisting with a science club, going on field trips, doing science fair projects, and more.

Biology
Goal Nature of Science
This strand is designed to help students understand the human dimensions of science, the nature of scientific thought, and the role of science in society. Biology is particularly rich in examples of science as a human endeavor, its historical perspectives, and the development of scientific understanding. Science as a Human Endeavor - Intellectual honesty and an ethical tradition are hallmarks of the practice of science. The practice is rooted in accurate data reporting, peer review, and making findings public. This aspect of the nature of science can be implemented by designing instruction that encourages students to work collaboratively in groups, to design investigations, formulate hypothesis, collect data, reach conclusions, and present their findings to their classmates. The content studied in biology provides an opportunity to present science as the basis for medicine, ecology, forensics, biotechnology, and environmental studies. The diverse biology content allows for looking at science as a vocation. Scientist, artist, and technician are just a few of the many careers in which a biology background is necessary.

There are a lot of different ways to approach teaching nursery rhymes to children. Many of the children probably know most of the rhymes, but some will not. As an introduction, you can first read (or sing) a rhyme to the children, while showing them the pictures. The children could then sing along with you. Word Families Many of the nursery rhymes contain common word families. You can use these rhymes to teach these letter combinations (and how they are spelled and spoken), having the students sound them out after memorizing the rhyme. For a list of some common word families and a list of the word families contained in some nursery rhymes, click here . You can study one word family a week. Students can use the Little Explorers Picture Dictionary to look for more words that belong to word families.
