Key to bird calls, songs and sounds This represents the initial page in a guide that allows you to identify sounds made by birds. The guide will ask to respond to whether the sound was simple or complex, musical or harsh, etc. At each point, the choices include descriptions of the attributes of sounds found further along that path, and a list of the bird sounds that will be found further on. For each of these choices, a list of bird sounds that conform to this description is given. If you select one of these from the list, and click on the button labelled "Select bird" you will be presented with a page with a URL pointer to a sound file of that bird, and a text description of the sound you will hear. At each point in the key, select the choice that most nearly characterizes the sound or song you heard. If you change your mind, navigational choices at the top of the page allow you to backtrack to particular choices you made.

This page relates to the number of different notes or sounds contained in the song you heard. (1) Sound or song consists of a single note.

British Bird Sounds on CD
The definitive audio guide to birds in Britain
Compiled and edited by Ron Kettle and Richard Ranft
Birdbooksdirect.com The total of 175 species on these compact discs includes all the British birds whose sounds are likely to be encountered by the average bird-watcher. Some scarce species like Dotterel and Garganey do not feature, nor do wintering waders like Bar-tailed Godwit and Knot, which are comparatively silent in Britain. The aim has been to include the most commonly heard sounds - songs and/or calls - of each species. Some filtering has been applied to many of the recordings to reduce intrusive background noise or other sounds, but without affecting the subject bird sounds. Otherwise only the occasional editing out of a blemish alters the original recording. In the few instances where separate parts of the same recording have been used there is a fade-out between them. For each recording, background species (when obvious), locality, year, month, and recordist are all meticulously given in the booklet. With voice announcements. 2 CDs and 20-page booklet. Price £24.99 order ref CD009

Bird sounds from our Bolivia birding trip September/October 2000
See trip report at johnbirding.wolweb.nl
Here are 50 recordings from this trip to highlands and lowlands, with wetter and drier sites. This is a selection of what we recorded there on minidisc, and typically it contains several species that may puzzle the birder visiting these sites: often heard but not often seen. Included is a recording of a spluttering river dolphin. The sounds are in mp3 format, which greatly reduces file size, and which can be played easily now (just try by clicking on the file name). In case you cannot yet play mp3, download e.g. the free WinAmp player program at e.g. www.download.com The species are given below in the sequence of the trip. I checked this selection on Sjoerd Mayer’s CD-ROM Birds of Bolivia version 2 (see info on www.birdsongs.com ). Compared to the wealth of sounds on that CD-ROM (with an enormous photo collection as well), the selection below is just meant to appetize, but still representative of what you will hear on such a trip in that season. Sjoerd himself has helped me identify some of the species of the early part of the trip. Sjoerd Mayer himself checked this page later also, and made several corrections and found several extra species at the background. His identifications are indicated with "SjM".

LEARNING BIRD SOUNDS IN THE EASTERN U.S.
Bird sounds (vocalizations) can be divided into two main groups: songs and calls. Songs help establish territory and attract mates. Calls help birds communicate both on the ground and in the air. An interesting fact is that, while we can learn to recognize the type of species and possibly the sex of the bird we are listening to, birds actually can recognize distinct individuals within a group by their sounds. Songbirds have better developed voice structures than we humans do and some actually can sing two notes at the same time. The tonal qualities of bird songs may vary by the habitat in which birds live. Some tones may carry better in heavy woods than in open fields. COMMON BIRD VOCALIZATIONS THAT YOU CAN LEARN
Baltimore oriole
flutelike, rich whistles, lots of variety Barred owl who cooks for you, who cooks for you all... Black-capped chickadee chickadee-dee-deee Cardinal what, what, what, cheer, cheer, cheer Cedar waxwing a high-pitched, buzzy eee, eee... Chipping sparrow a rapid dry trill Downy woodpecker pik or chik, also a descending whinny

If the sound of a bird your looking for is not in our library, we recommend you try any of the following bird audio and/or mnemonics sites.
It's interesting to note, that the best way to understand the entire repertoire of a particular bird is by comparing various audio recordings and written mnemonics. "Steve's Sounds" page is much more than just a collection of sounds. It is a collection of educational tools that spans the internet eNature.com bird Audio section

Ornithological Society Homepage. Tony Phillips' bird sounds links TonyPhillips has put together a list of sites containing bird calls.
http://www.10x50.com/sounds.htm
The addition of a counter to this page revealed quite a few visitors to this part of the Knutsford Ornithological Society website! Initially (1995) it was an exercise in the production of .wav and .ra sound files for inclusion on a website so others could download them to their own computer. Encouraged by the number of visitors I'll perhaps try and add a few other examples of the songs and sounds of British birds in the months to come.
Please send me an e-mail if you want any particular species and I'll see if we have it on file.
For most of these sounds two types of file are available
. wav file - slightly better quality than Real Audio, but larger and will therefore take longer to download. No special player required, your system will have one installed.
.rm file - this is a Real Audio file, smaller and quicker to load. Requires RealPlayer a simple (relatively) FREE download and not only will you be able to listen to these recordings but also explore the cutting edge of technology, with real- time video and 100's of radio stations broadcasting live in RealAudio. ** download the FREE player - top right (or search around for it - no need to pay!)**

Hopefully this page will help rehabilitators identify the species they have so they can give the bird proper care and feeding. A note on the recordings: We don't have high quality equipment - so some recordings may have lost the higher frequencies - some birds - like nestling Eastern Phoebes - we just couldn't record at all! If anyone has high-end audio recording equipment that they would like to lend / donate for this project - please contact us ! We'd also like to add any other young bird recordings you might have. All un-credited files are recorded from birds at The CROW Files are MP3 audio for fast download. We have WAV format recordings for you who don't have MP3 player software. The WAV files are much larger! Help support The CROW 's wildlife rehabilitation
