22. Feeding Behavior In Birds
Bird control methods that work by Michael E. Trunko
http://cas.bellarmine.edu/tietjen/images/feeding_behavior_in_birds.htm
Feeding Behavior in Birds (A study in intra- and inter-species competition) Bellarmine College, Louisville, Kentucky) Aaron Glasscock G.W. Johns Keri Owen December 11, 1998 Abstract: Birds have always been of interest to the human population. Birds have served as the source of inspiration to flight, sources of myths, and as companions. Competition has also been a large part of human existence, it is not only an aspect of life it is also an interest to man. With this in mind, it was the interest of this group to study birds in a setting that would be conducive to observing the interactions and competition among birds. This group set out to determine the degree of competition found in birds, both intra- and inter-species. Purpose: To observe and record the interactions among birds, both intra- and inter-species competition, through the observation of the feeding behaviors in birds. Method: Feed was placed in both feeders and maintained for approximately one week before observations were made. After the initial week, observations were made during four different periods throughout the day for approximately one month. The four different observation periods were in the morning, noon, afternoon, and early evening. Feed was maintained in the feeders during the month. The number of birds, both in total numbers and the numbers within a specific species were observed. The different species present were observed and noted. The behavior of the birds was also noted. Result: The data collected during the month was averaged to correspond to data representing one day.

23. Welcome To Bad River Hunts - First Class Hunting In South Dakota
Hunts for pheasant, turkey, whitetail deer, mule deer, prairie dogs, and coyote. Features location, reservations, prices, and testimonials.
http://www.badriverhunts.com/
A sweeping 15,000 private acres - arguably the most pristine hunting ground in the Dakotas - beckon the consummate outdoorsman. Rolling hills, virgin prairie, sheltered woodlands, open meadows and forested creeks harbor adventure...
  • Numerous coveys of Pheasant and Wildfowl Herds of Whitetail and Mule deer Dams choked with Largemouth Bass
And one of the nation's newest and most exclusive hunting lodges: Bad River, located on a 100-year-old family-owned ranch in the rugged heart of South Dakota, is groomed for wildlife in it's natural habitat. Home to abundant wild pheasant and some of the largest whitetail deer in the state (in 2000 we recorded a 7 by 6 with 199 gross points), the ranch regularly plants both cover and feed crops to attract a variety of wildfowl and buck as well as prairie dog, coyote and other game. Acres of the land also are designated as hunting preserves, which allows for exclusive early and late-season hunting. The trophy size animals are as common as the ranch's panoramic sunsets.

Click to see current map Locations for both birds again and sadly the last time we'll include the female. The location for the female is the last good signal we had from her, on 18 Nov., on the Santa Maria River, north of Santiago, Panama (some 2,400 miles from her nest). While we continue to receive sporadic signals from her transmitter, they tell us that she is not moving, so we presume she is dead. Optimistically, but unrealistically, she may have lost the transmitter and show up on the nest "unplugged," but we do not expect this. Average annual mortality in adult Ospreys is about 15%, so we expect to lose some birds every year.
The male has finally left the delta of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, where he has been since early November and is heading north.

When Birds are Pests
Bird control methods that work
by Michael E. Trunko
Winged invaders swoop down from the sky, descend upon your ripening fruit or newly planted vegetable garden and in minutes your harvest or garden is gone. If you've ever suffered similar misfortunes, you're not alone. Although bird problems vary from year to year, region to region, and crop to crop, gardeners can expect damage to some extentfrom minor annoyances to total devastationevery season.
"It's just a fact of life," laments Mona Zemsky of Bird-X, Inc., a manufacturer of bird-control devices in Chicago, "that if you grow certain crops, you're going to have a bird problem. Irrigated gardens in the deserts of the Southwest are just as susceptible as gardens in the Midwest or New England."
An effective bird-control strategy involves more than sticking a scarecrow in your garden and forgetting about it (although in rare instances, this may work). Usually, the secret lies not only in the product or procedure but in your efforts and commitment as well. Also, the first strategy you attempt may not prove successful. But if you correctly use the appropriate products and procedures, you will enjoy damage-free harvests.
Start Early
"Failing to be ready early enough is perhaps the biggest mistake gardeners make," Zemsky points out. "You must keep the birds out before they include your garden in their daily feeding habit."
