Reproduction
A. Sexual maturity. 1. In general, smaller species begin breeding at an earlier age than larger species.
    a. Small Accipiter hawks, falcons, and harriers usually start to breed at one to two years. b. Buteo hawks, kites, and large falcons breed at two or three years. Ospreys begin breeding at three or more years. c. Large eagles usually start to breed at four to nine years, and vultures up to 12 years.
2. First-time breeding may be delayed if competition for food is high or territories are unavailable. B. Reproductive behavior. 1. Most diurnal birds of prey are monogamous. Some birds keep the same mate for several years, such as ospreys, while others have different mates each year, such as snail kites. In some groups of Harris' hawks, monogamous breeding pairs are assisted by a number of nonbreeding helpers, mostly previous offspring. 2. A few species are polygynous or polyandrous.
    a. Polygyny is when a male mates with more than one female at a time. Many harriers are polygynous. b. Polyandry is when a female mates with more than one male at a time. Polyandry has been observed in populations of Harris' hawks and Galapagos hawks

BATS
Bats are among the most successful mammals:
there are more bats than any other mammal except rodents. But bats probably outnumber even rodents if we counted each individual.
The 900 or so species of bats make up 20% or nearly one-quarter of all living mammal species! In the tropics, there are often more bats than all other kinds of mammals combined. There are about 80 bat species in Southeast Asia. Classification: Bats are from the order Chiroptera which means "hand wing" in Greek. There are two main suborders of bats:
Megachiroptera or Megabats:
Also known as Flying Foxes (only because they look fox-like; they are NOT foxes!). Found only in the Old World, Megabats eat a narrower range of food (fruits, nectar). They don't rely on echolocation as much to navigate (though some echolocate with tongue clicks). Instead, they have excellent eyesight and smell senses. There is only 1 family of Megabats
Microchiroptera or Microbats: The rest of 16 families are Microbats. Microbats eat a wide range of food: most are carnivores, mostly insects, but they include fruit eaters, and bizarre specialists like the infamous Vampire Bat. All Microbats use sophisticated echolocation rather than vision to navigate and catch their food. So a Microbat usually has small eyes, and weird fleshy growths on its nose to send out ultrasonic pulses and oversized ears to receive the echoes. Microbats are more widely distributed and have a wider range of forms than any other mammal order.

What makes a Bird a Bird? What Makes A Bird A Raptor? Types of Raptors Birds of Prey Facts ... Test Your Knowledge
DEFINITION
The word raptor is derived from "rapere", a Latin word, which means to seize or capture. More specifically, a raptor is a bird of prey. A bird of prey is a carnivore (meat eater) that kills and eats mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, and other birds. Many birds hunt, kill, and eat meat, but they may not be a raptor. There are three distinguishing traits that make raptors different from other birds:
  • hooked beaks with sharp edges feet with sharp, curved claws or talons keen eyesight
ORDERS AND GROUPS Raptors belong to two scientific orders, the Strigiformes and Falconiformes. The orders are divided into six groups with a total of about 446 species worldwide. They include:
  • secretary bird (1 specie in Africa) falcons (63 species) osprey (1 specie) hawks and eagles (226 species) vultures (7 species) owls (148 species)
HUNTERS BY DAY OR BY NIGHT
Raptors also fit into two basic groupings as hunters, they are either diurnal or nocturnal hunters.

Birds of prey have a hooked beak for
cutting and tearing meat. Many raptors
will either catch live prey or scavenge for
carrion. Some species favor only live
prey, while others prefer dead prey, and
a very few raptors will even supplement
their diet with fruit and other plant material. WING SHAPE Flight patterns are determined in part by wing shape. For example, raptors with long, broad wings can easily glide across fields or soar on updrafts. Raptors with short, broad wings are quick and maneuverable. Other wing shapes are more suited for spectacular high-speed dives or hovering just above the ground. DIGESTION All raptors, except owls, have a crop that

OWL BOOKS
Introduction
For most of us, reading about owls will be the closest we get. By nature, they are normally passive during the daytime and they are also very silent. Fortunately fur us armchair Owl lovers, there is a growing number of excellent books that we can dip into. They range from the short and sweet, through the pictorial books to the technical volumes, with plenty of detailed information of all of the owl species.

Daffodils are sign of spring and love
by Ron Freethy, Nature Watch editor WE all know the daffodil is one of the joys of spring but few realise that it has been used in medicine. At one time it was believed that the sap of the plant had healing powers. It is, however, an irritant and quite unpleasant if it gets on the skin. The word Narcissus comes from the ancient Greek word narke which means a stupor. It is from this root that we have derived the word narcotic. This is reference to the poisonous nature of the bulbs. These contain an alkaloid which can cause paralysis and even death. It does, however, taste so horrible that nobody could eat enough to cause death. Greek mythology tells us about a young chap called Narcissus, the gift of staying young forever and providing he never looked at his own face.

Birds of Prey Exhibit The Austin Nature and Science Center provides a permanent home to some amazing birds of prey. We exhibit 11 different species of raptors, including crested caracaras (which are falcons!), Swainson's hawks (which are migratory!) and barn owls (which are not typical owls!). The detailed signs in front of their enclosures tell visitors why each bird is here and provide basic information about that species. You will also find some interesting facts about raptor characteristics, adaptations, and classification on these signs, so read up, up, and away! Remember that all of these birds of prey have a disabling injury to either a foot, wing, or eye that would prevent them from hunting successfully in the wild. Listen for the calls of our red-tailed hawks and barred owls as you prowl through this enchanting exhibit!

She has a keen interest in the welfare of birds of prey, which comes across strongly in this excellent introduction to falconry. The main bird families are discussed in terms of their care and training. Anyone planning on taking up falconry should read this book first, to decide whether they are suited to caring for birds of prey, as well as for help in deciding which bird family they should start with. Publication Date: Spring 1999 Except in Kazakstan. Imperial eagles, golden eagles, steppe eagles, and white-tailed sea eagles live together on the grassy steppes of Kazakstan. Katzner wants to know how the four groups share habitat and food resources in the Central Asian country. Katzner has spent the past two summers studying the eagles on the wide open plains of the Naurzum Zapovednik, a nature reserve in Kazakstan. The ASU researcher hopes that his work will build on existing ecological theory. He also wants to provide practical information that will help land management around the zapovednik. During his summers at the zapovednik, Katzner found about 50 active nests belonging to all four eagle groups. He put high technology to work. Katzner used a Global Positioning Satellite receiver to determine the exact geographic location of each nest, then analyzed their distribution with a computer. He found that each species of eagle adapted to the space limitations in different ways.
