or for any other use other than as a family pet. a bird book for information on longevityof birds. Environment and care birds are intelligent and social pets
http://www.arl-iowa.org/PetCare/Birds.asp
Birds as Pets
The Animal Rescue League adopts birds to be family pets. Under no circumstances should birds be used for food for other animals; for experimentation or laboratory work; or for any other use other than as a family pet. The ARL strictly enforces this policy under the terms of the adoption contract.
There are so many types of birds that life spans are not listed here. Please consult a bird book for information on longevity of birds.
Environment and Care
Birds are intelligent and social pets that require love and attention. Although the amount of attention varies by species, a bird that is ignored or bored can go insane, pluck his feathers or even mutilate himself. Keep your bird in an area where there is family activity, but be sure he/she has a quiet area to sleep in at night. Talk to your bird during the day. If you work, leave a radio, CD or TV on when you are gone. Take your bird out for play and cuddling every day.
Birds need to live in steady temperatures. Sudden changes in temperature can be harmful. In excessively hot temperatures, birds may pant or hold their wings partially open; lightly misting the bird with water may help.
Birds of tropical origin may enjoy daily misting, but should be kept warm until their feathers have dried.

http://www.healthypet.com/Library/petcare-28.html
Pet Care Tips:
Polly in Paradise
Polly sits on your friend's shoulder, quiet and content, pulling his feathers slowly through his beak. As he preens his bright plumage without a care in the world, you think to yourself that having such a neat pet would be cool. Then Polly looks up at you and says with a slight parrot twang, "I love you, sweetheart!" That did it! Your heart melts, and you start to think seriously about getting a Polly of your very own. There are many things you need to bear in mind when considering a bird as a pet. Birds can be wonderfully rewarding pets, but they can also try your patience, much like a child who is forever in that stage known as the terrible twos. They feel no guilt about kissing you with the same beak they used to chew through your antique coffee table. And the sweetest, softest noises will be alternated with screaming so shrill you'll fear for the crystal. Understanding your bird, providing your bird what he needs to be happy and healthy, and making sure that he sees a veterinarian once a year will go a long way in keeping both you and Polly happy and living in harmony. Picking Polly
There are many different types of birds people keep for pets; parrots are among the most common. The term "parrot" refers to any bird with a hook bill, ranging from a little parakeet to the hyacinth macaw, which measures approximately four feet from head to tail. Research the breeds you're interested in before making your decision. Keep in mind when you're looking at a bird's attributes that there may be a downside to the very trait you're attracted to. Different parrots, for example, are good at different things. Cockatoos are considered the most affectionate of the parrots; they like to be held and snuggled. But they can also become severely depressed if they're not given enough attention, and they're prone to self-destructive behavior for this very reason. Macaws, on the other hand, are big and bright, making them an exotic eye-catcher, but their large size requires extra space so that they can adequately exercise.

http://www.healthypet.com/Library/prevent-18.html
Preventive Care:
Caring For Your Pet Bird
Advances in the domestic breeding and rearing of birds has led to an improved availability of healthy, tame, young birds. This increased availability has dramatically increased the popularity of birds as pets. For many people, the company of beautiful, unique, and possible talking pets can make keeping birds an attractive alternative to other pets. Selection
The personalities, housing, and dietary needs of the different types of birds must be considered by the prospective bird owner. To select a healthy bird, look for these characteristics:
  • Bright, smooth feathers
  • Full breast muscles
  • Clear, alert eyes
  • Playful activity
Shivering, ruffled feathers, shut eyes, and inactivity often mean a health problem. All new pet birds should be checked by your veterinarian, if possible, before the sale is final. Cages
The type and size of the cage should be carefully matched for each bird. If a cage is too small or the bars too widely spaced, the bird's wings may be injured or the pet may escape. The cage must be made of nontoxic materials that can withstand the abuse of heavy chewing. It also must be secured so that it is not easily knocked over. Food dishes
Within the cage, food and water cups must be anchored. Dishes also should be kept clean and free of any droppings.
