The Poor Misunderstood Black Widow Spider
by
Felice Prager
I imagined she would be a lot larger than she actually was. It's funny how fear can make things grow out of proportion. With this instance, I had her the size of my fist...or larger.
I'd seen some pictures. I knew about the hourglass marking on her body, but I never read the details about her size. She was a picture in a book to me. I also knew about the places she might hide. And I tried to stay away from those places. I would never want to start a confrontation.
When I lifted the cover from the skimmer in my pool, I didn't know she had been there. But she was. She had left a sac of eggs in a small web she had constructed on the underside of the skimmer's cover, and she remained an inch from it, waiting patiently, as mothers often do, for nature to perform.
When I slid my fingers in the cover to pull it up and off in order to check if there was enough chlorine, my fingers missed her construction by a few inches. They also missed her by a few inches.
I dropped the cover and did my usual Southwestern "There's a Spider in My Pool" dance. When the Rescue Squad of Prager, Prager, and Prager arrived, they found me up on a pool chair pointing helplessly to the pool cover which was now floating in the pool. Mr. Prager reached in to get it. The spiders would live to see many more days as they landed upside without a drop of water touching them. The widow watched her nest as Mr. Prager placed the cover in a safer place, away from the crazy lady who wanted them crushed to death.

Black Widow Spiders
SPIDER ELIMINATION SPIDER BIOLOGY Araneae: Theridiidae, Latrodectus mactans black widow spider control program. The female black widow spider rarely leaves her web. The web she constructs is an irregular, tangled, cris Egg sacs are pear shaped (or oval), brown, papery and about ½ inch long. They hold from 25 to 900 or more eggs, which have an incubation period of 20 days. The spiderlings disperse shortly after emerging, tearing an opening in the egg sac and stay near the sac. After several hours, these second instar spiderlings balloon to the ground and scatter. Growth requires two to three months, with older females dying in autumn after egg laying. Of all spiders, the Black Widow is the most feared. The female’s venom is especially poisonous to people. Despite its reputation, this spider often attempts to escape rather than bite, unless it is guarding an egg mass or if it is cornered and pressed. The male black widow will not bite you. After mating, the female sometimes eats the male (remember, she only has to mate once in her life), earning the name "widow." During the period shortly following mating and laying of eggs, the female black widow can be a little cranky and hungry. After this period (if he lives through it!) the male lives quite comfortably, eating prey captured by the female. The development of his venom sacs stop and become inactive as the male matures, thus making him less of a potential problem than his female counterpart.

Black Widow Spiders
A mature female black widow spider has a large, black, shiny body and measures approximately 3/8 inch long, with 1inch legs. An hourglass shape in bright red or orange-red color can be found on the abdomen. Black widow spider webs are very irregular, not in lively concentric rings; they are white and very strong. They are most often found in areas where water and insects are readily available. Around the home they can be found under or in outdoor furniture, barbecue grills, pool pumps and in storage areas, garages, wood piles, block fences and the corners of porches and patios. The black widow is shy. She hides near the web by day and is most active at night where she waits in her web for prey to enter. She produces hundreds of babies hatched from egg sacs that look like little moth balls. The young black widows are white in color and spread quickly after hatching. The male black widow is much smaller and is brown and white in color. Because of its size, its bite cannot pierce skin and is, therefore, not dangerous to humans. Black Widow Spider Control A "live and let live" attitude is the best approach for living in harmony with all nature. But if you have a problem of close contact with the black widow or you have young children who play outside, you may have to take steps to control the black widow population around your house. To control the black widow populations, locate the black widow spider, using a flashlight at night to find her in her web; then vacuum her and her web and her eggs up and safely dispose of the bag.

black widow spiders. black widow spiders are not usually deadly, especiallyto adults, because they inject only a small amount of venom.
http://www.steinservices.com/CommonPests/spiders.htm
BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS Black Widow is considered the most venomous spider in North America. Of all spiders, the Black Widow is the most feared. The venom of the black widow spider is 15 times as toxic as the venom of the prairie rattlesnake. Black Widow spiders are not usually deadly, especially to adults, because they inject only a small amount of venom. Despite its reputation, this spider often attempts to escape rather than bite, unless it is guarding an egg mass or if it is cornered and pressed.
After mating, the female sometimes eats the male, earning the name "widow." The female is the most easily recognized, her shiny black body giving great contrast to the red hourglass marking on her round abdomen. Adult males are harmless, about half the female's size, and usually have yellow and red bands with spots on their backs. This spider is most common in the Southern locales of the United States.
Black widow spiders can be found around wood piles, and are frequently encountered when homeowners carry firewood into the house.

BLACK WIDOW SPIDER REPORT Latrodectus mactans The Black Widow spider is a member of the arachnid family. The Black Widow is known for its poisonous venom but also for its red hourglass marking which is found on the abdomen of the spider. The male spiders are smaller than the females and a cream color with white markings instead of red. The Black Widow spider delivers its venom the same way every other arachnid does. Through fang-like appendages which are hollow in the middle. The poison of the spider acts upon a persons nervous system. The sympotoms are very serious and painful. The person could experience extreme pain in the abdomen area, legs, high cerebrospinal fluid pressure, nausea, muscular spasms, and even respiratory paralysis. Fatal bites are very rare. In El Paso Black Widow spider webs aren't an odd thing to see even though they usually prey on insects. Even lizards are caught and ate by the deadly Black Widow. Black Widows are more deadly and poisonous than the Tarantula spiders of the desert. http://www.utep.edu/epbionet/cheklist/arthropo/a104blwi.htm

What a Black Widow Spider Is
The black widow spider is one of six poisonous kinds of spiders in the United States. It is part of the arachnid family, which includes not just spiders, but ticks , mites, and scorpions , too. Its body is about one-half inch long (smaller than a dime), and it has long legs. The black widow spider is shiny and black with a red-orange or yellow mark in the shape of an hourglass on its stomach. Black widow spiders and their relatives can be found almost anywhere in the Western hemisphere of the world in damp and dark places. Their favorite places are wood piles, tree stumps, trash piles, storage sheds, fruit and vegetable gardens, in stone walls, and under rocks. If they come inside, they will go to dark places like corners of closets, garages, or behind furniture. They are shy by nature and bite only when trapped, sat on, or accidentally touched.

Black Widow Spider Scientific name: Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius)
(Araneae: Theridiidae) Facts: Black widow spiders are shy and secretive and found in seldom-disturbed areas. The mature female has a characteristic hourglass-shaped, reddish orange marking on the underside of the abdomen. Black widow spiders are predaceous, devouring small arthropods trapped in their webs. Their bite is relatively painless at first, but may be followed in about an hour by intense pain and swelling. The venom causes nausea, cramps, lack of coordination, and difficulty breathing by interference in nervous functions. Death has occurred in individuals hypersensitive to the venom.
