Most people are familiar with the large, shiny black body and red "hourglass" markings on the underside of the abdomen (see picture), but it is important to note that the coloration and markings are only found on adult females. Black widows spin webs of coarse silk, usually near the ground in dark places, and usually outdoors. They do not leave their webs voluntarily and are clumsy and completely out of their element away from them. Piles of rubble, sheds, garages, crawl spaces, cellars, and basements may harbor these spiders. Although the nocturnal black widows are not aggressive, females will bite when provoked sufficiently. Males, which are rarely seen, do not bite, and they are much smaller, narrower, and generally more brightly colored than females. The insertion of the female's fangs produces a pinprick sensation, followed by a burning sensation for a few minutes. Pain usually progresses up or down the arm or leg, finally localizing more or less in the abdomen and back. The abdominal muscles become rigid and board-like with severe cramps. Other symptoms may be nausea, depression, insomnia, tremors, a speech defect and a slight rise in body temperature. The general symptoms may appear after a few hours or may be observed within a few minutes of the bite. Muscular spasms and cramps of the arms, legs, back and abdomen may be quite painful at the height of the reaction. Fatalities are rare, and the robust usually recover quickly and completely.

A most unwelcome guest that appears during this yearly indoor migration is the black widow spider. The poisonous black widow is common throughout Colorado. Reports indicate that bites result in death for only one percent or less of the cases, usually occurring in very young or very old individuals. With healthy people, recovery is usually complete in 2 to 5 days. However, this spider is considered the most venomous spider in North America. It is not aggressive, and fatalities from its bite are uncommon. However bites can cause serious illness, so precautions are especially in order at this time of year. The female black widow is poisonous and the male is not. The female is about 1.5 inches long, jet black in color and usually has a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. The male is smaller with brown markings. This spider is found in undergrowth, under stones, in garages, window wells, crawl spaces and basements. Homes in new developments will be bothered for some time from natural populations in the area. Black widows spin tangled webs of coarse silk in dark places, usually outdoors. Webs are usually built near the ground (occasionally within dwellings). The female lays eggs in silken cocoons or sacs that are globular in shape and about 1/2 inch in diameter. Sacs are white at first, later turning pale brown. About 300 to 400 eggs per sac are common with 4 to 9 egg sacs produced during a summer. Normally, only 1 to 12 young survive after the egg incubation period of 14 to 30 days due to cannibalism.

Females often eat the males after mating, thus, giving them their rather morbid name. Females produce a neurotoxin and bite if disturbed or handled roughly. Each year several deaths are attributed to the bite of black widow spiders as a result of anaphylactic reactions, however, in most cases, the bite is no worse than a wasp sting.
