SPIDERS
There are more than 30,000 species of spiders. Most of the spiders are venomous and use their venom to immobilize or kill prey. The violin spiders ( Loxoceles spp and the widow spider ( Latrodectus spp .) are significant causes of local or systematic effects from envenomization in the U.S. Recently, the aggressive house spider Tegenaria agrestis ), was discovered to be the cause of numerous necrotic lesions in the Pacific Northwest BLACK WIDOW SPIDER Several species of widow spiders occur worldwide, however Latroductus mactans is the one most generally associated with the name “black widow spider”. The black widow spider injects a potent neurotoxin upon biting. Initially, the bite itself is mild; more than half of the people do not know that they have been bitten. Unlike the skin necrosis or systematic hemolysis associated with bites from the brown recluse spider, black widows produce pain in the regional lymph nodes, usually in the axilla or inguinal area, increased blood pressure and white blood cell count, and profuse sweating and nausea. The bite site may appear as a bluish-red spot with a white areola and sometimes an urticarial rash. Significant

Background: The black widow, or hourglass, spider is the most dangerous species in the US, due to its potent venom. Spiders of the genus Latrodectus are worldwide in distribution. In the US, they are found in every state except Alaska. They predominantly are seen in southern and western states. Five species of widow spiders are extant in the US. Spiders of the Latrodectus genus are not aggressive, biting only when disturbed. Black widow spiders spin webs and await their prey. They normally can be found in their webs, which usually are located near protected places, such as the undersides of stones and logs, in the angles of doors, windows, and shutters, and in littered areas such as city dumps, garages, barns, outhouses and old sheds. Often these webs are found around outdoor toilet seats, resulting in bites on or near the genitalia. Adult females are mostly jet-black and often have striking red markings on their abdomens. On the ventral surface of the globular abdomen is a characteristic marking that consists of 2 equilateral triangles arranged apex to apex in an hourglass configuration.

The brown spiders of the genus Loxosceles (Brown Recluse, Fiddle Spider) are also dangerous, although not as deadily as the Black Widow. The common wolf spider and other non-descript brown spiders are often mistaken for the brown recluse. The symptoms of bites of each of these two spiders and their treatment are given in the links below. You will also find identification tips for both species. Venomous Spiders in Florida G. B. Edwards , Taxonomic Entomologist
In Florida, only two main types of venomous spiders occur: widow spiders and recluse spiders
Three species of widow spiders are native to Florida, and a fourth species has been introduced. No species of recluse spiders are native to Florida , but three species have been intercepted, and occasionally have established populations in single buildings at scattered locations.
Both types of spiders tend to be found in similar places, which is in or under objects where their presence is not necessarily obvious. In the interest of safety, it is recommended that people engaged in activities where they cannot see where their hands are being placed (such as lifting boards or firewood, or reaching into storage boxes) should wear gloves to prevent being bitten by a hidden spider. Also, clothingespecially if unused for a considerable timeshould be checked before wearing, as a spider may have taken up residence within it.

Effective Control of
Household Spiders
Home Identification Prevention Physical Control ... Health Canada Introduction Spiders commonly found in Canadian homes include house spiders, wolf spiders, cellar spiders, fishing spiders and, much more infrequently, black widow spiders. Spiders are usually found in corners of rooms, closets, boxes, dark crevices, basements, garages, and gardens. Spiders are excellent pest controllers. Wolf spiders are especially beneficial to farmers and gardeners because they prey on common crop pests such as cottonworms, gypsy moths and pea aphids. Spiders do not transmit any diseases. Although nearly all spiders have venom glands, they rarely bite humans and only a few species, such as the black widow spider, can have a dangerously venomous bite. Important Notices This website has been published by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency to provide homeowners and consumers with a relevant and useful resource regarding household pest management. Educational Resource Guide #6 Spiders of Medical Importance
by Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator "Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey; along came a spider, and sat down beside her; and frightened Miss Muffet away." "There was an old lady who swallowed a spider that wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. I don't know why she swallowed the fly. Perhaps she'll die." "'Step into my parlor,'" said the spider to the fly." With rhymes like these, it is no wonder that many people view spiders with apprehension. And, the movie, "Arachnophobia," did not do much to dispel fears about these eight-legged creatures. There are about 2,000 kinds of spiders in the United States. Of these, only a few species are considered to have bites that are of medical importance. Spiders are very shy creatures. Most people get bitten because they are cleaning an area that has not been cleaned for a long time and they disturb a spider's web or nest. Spiders are often blamed for many more bites than they actually commit. In general, most spider bites will not harm most people except for slight discomfort for a limited time after being bitten. A few individuals may be hypersensitive to the bites of a particular species, but this allergic reaction won't be known until after the person gets bitten.

Only the female Black Widow is venomous; she eats the male after mating then hangs belly upward and rarely leaves the web. Maybe you know someone like this.
The female Black Widow is shiny black, usually with a reddish hourglass shape on the underside of her spherical abdomen. Her body is about 1 inch long. Adult males are about half the female's size, with smaller bodies, longer legs and usually have yellow and red bands and spots over the back as do the immature stages.
Newly hatched spiderlings are predominately white or yellowish-white, gradually acquiring more black and varying amounts of red and white with each molt.
The venom of the black widow spider is 15 times as toxic as the venom of the Prairie Rattlesnake. The bite itself is often not painful and may go unnoticed. But the poison injected by the the Black Widow bite can cause abdominal pain similar to appendicitis as well as pain to muscles or the soles of the feet. Other symptoms include alternating salivation and dry-mouth, paralysis of the diaphragm, profuse sweating and swollen eyelids. Sounds like being in love. Give this gift to someone you are not sure about, describe the symptoms and see if they feel the same way about you!

The widow spiders, genus Latrodectus , are among the most recognized spiders on earth; they are the largest of the cobweb weavers, family Theridiidae , and all species are poisonous. The term widow The term black widow refers to those species in the United States, Europe, and some other areas, which are shiny black in appearance. The most well known of the U.S. black widows is the southern widow, Latrodectus mactans , whose latin name translates "murderous biting robber". The southern widow is found in the southeastern U.S., west to central Texas and Oklahoma, and north to southern New York; it is also found in the West Indies. Like most widow spiders, it prefers dark, cool places to build its web, such as outhouses, window wells, under well covers, and beneath trash. The red "hourglass" of the southern widow is actually shaped more like an anvil than a perfect hourglass in most specimens. The southern widow causes many envenomations in humans, particularly in the southern part of its range, where it is most common. The western black widow

Poisonous Spiders
Introduction
The spiders listed on this page commonly are found within nurseries. While they can be listed as predators of insects, the insects they prey upon are more likely to be beneficial insects rather than insect pests. Their source of food aside, they are included here because they are also poisonous and may cause problems with nursery employees. Most spider bites are not likely to be dangerous, but medical care and advice should be sought in each case and it is important to save any biting spider so it can be identified.
Widow Spiders
The black widow spider is found throughout the western hemisphere, and is extremely common in the southern United States. In fact, four species of widow spiders occur in Florida: the southern black widow, the northern black widow, the red widow and the brown widow. All these species are rather large spiders, about 1 1/2 inches long with the legs extended. The southern black widow and the northern black widow are a shiny, jet-black color. The southern black widow has a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen and another red spot at the tip end of the abdomen. The northern black widow has a row of red spots located in the middle of its back and two reddish triangles resembling an hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. The

Brown Widow Spiders
By Fred Santana , Ph.D., Sarasota County IPM Coordinator When the subject of dangerous spiders comes up, the average person usually thinks about the black widow spider. Their shiny black body with a prominent red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen is an image that readily comes to mind.
DISTRIBUTION
In Florida, however, there are three other venomous widow spiders (Southern black widow, northern black widow, and, the red widow) in addition to the brown widow. The most commonly encountered species of the group that people are finding around their homes and work place in Sarasota County is the brown widow spider Latrodectus geometricus . In the mid to late nineties there seems to have been an outbreak of brown widow spiders. Sightings have been reported from the barrier islands to I-75. At one time the brown widow, which was introduced into Florida, was most abundant in coastal cities of southeastern Florida. It now seems to have spread throughout the state and reports of sightings have been received from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Why are they so common? Perhaps, the milder winters of the last few years have contributed to their expanding range and increased presence. It could be there are more insects for them to feed on as a result of the milder winters. Along with the weather, however, another important factor is transportation by vehicles. The Extension Office has received increasing email and phone calls asking how to control brow widow spiders in and under cars and recreation vehicles.

    Common Name: Black widow spider
    Scientific Name: Latrodectus mactans Fabricius
Order: Araneae Description: There are more than 25 Latrodectus species world wide. Contrary to common belief, the female does not consume the male in most situations, except when held together in cages from which the male cannot escape. Examination of the genitalia is the proper way to identify species in this group. The species in Texas can be separated to some degree by the shape of the red markings on the abdomen and the location. The western black widow, Latrodectus hesperus L. hesperus have been found in which the adults retain their brilliant immature colors. Further west, the coloration of the species appears to grade back to black. The northern black widow Latrodectus variolus Walckenaer, usually has the hourglass divided, typically with red spots on the dorsum and white lines on the sides. This species occurs throughout much of the eastern half of the U.S.

However, there are very few species of spiders in the United States and South Carolina that produce harmful bites. The U.S. Public Health Service reports that poisonous bites are a very minor cause of death in the United States. Annually, venomous animals produce death as follows: bees, 12; wasps and other hymenoptera, 10; snakes, 14; spiders, six; and scorpions, one. In South Carolina, two groups of spiders, the widow (Theridiidae: Lactrodectus species) and the recluse (Loxoscelidae: Loxosceles species) spiders, are of most concern and will be discussed in detail. Two other species, Chirocanthium inclusum (a common running spider) and Argiope aurantia (the black and yellow garden spider), have occasionally been reported as inflicting serious bites in humans. None of these bites produced death or prolonged illness. WIDOW SPIDERS Description: The widow spiders are large with mature females measuring 1½ inches with legs extended. Most people are familiar with the southern black widow ( Lactrodectus mactans ), a glossy black spider with a complete red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen. SAN DIEGO Along with nuclear missiles from North Korea, crazy San Diego drivers, cancer-causing smog, drought, flash floods, fires and fast food you should now be on alert for the rare brown widow spider. Video Spiders Showing Up Everywhere The spiders are not native to Southern California, but they are beginning to show up in alarming numbers. Last week a Los Angeles fourth-grader discovered one on a field trip. The child was not hurt, but the potential for danger was certainly there, according to entomologist David Faulkner. "They can bite, and have quite a bit of venom they can inject," he said. The brown widow's venom is considered to be twice as poisonous as that of the more common black widow. Its venom can have 15 times the toxicity of rattlesnake venom, 10News reported.
