Time-tested boarding schools and programs where troubled teens find success and families reunite. Over 35 years of experience saving lives, healing families and creating hope
Our schools and programs foster growth in adolescents who are faced with emotional difficulties, motivational or behavioral problems, oppositional defiant disorder, and learning disabilities, such as ADHD. In 1967, CEDU pioneered and defined the term "emotional growth;" for over 30 years, we have led the industry in meeting the needs of troubled teens. Our therapeutic and emotional growth programs deliver an integrated emotional growth and academic curriculum that allows the adolescent to succeed academically and mature emotionally.

Admissions Criteria Exclusionary Criteria Financial Information
Admissions Criteria Stone Mountain School serves boys in grades 6 through 12. The student must be able to participate in a rigorous outdoor program. Students must possess a full scale IQ of 80 or more as measured by a standardized test. Typical academic problems Many of our students have issues with attending to the task at hand. They are easily distracted and have difficulty focusing on a project. Many have experienced repeated failures and they easily become discouraged. A typical student at Stone Mountain is someone who is not performing at his grade level or living up to his potential. A high percentage of applicants have been diagnosed with a specific learning disability and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are currently taking medication. Typical behavior problems Many students who are referred to Stone Mountain School have exhibited oppositional behavior or defiance of authority at home or school. These boys often refuse to do homework or chores. They may be making poor choices when it comes to friends and recreational activities. They often refuse to listen to the advice of their parents. At school these boys are usually disruptive in class, refuse to do lessons, and lack respect for teachers. Many of our students have had difficulty accepting responsibility for their behavior and place the blame for their problems on other people or circumstances.

Assimilation Through Education: Indian Boarding Schools in the Pacific Northwest
Carolyn J. Marr
Introduction
The goal of Indian education from the 1880s through the 1920s was to assimilate Indian people into the melting pot of America by placing them in institutions where traditional ways could be replaced by those sanctioned by the government. Federal Indian policy called for the removal of children from their families and in many cases enrollment in a government run boarding school. In this way, the policy makers believed, young people would be immersed in the values and practical knowledge of the dominant American society while also being kept away from any influences imparted by their traditionally-minded relatives.

The Library of Congress Indian Boarding Schools: Civilizing the Native Spirit
Overview In the late 1800s, the United States supported an educational experiment that the government hoped would change the traditions and customs of American Indians. Special boarding schools were created in locations all over the United States with the purpose of "civilizing" American Indian youth . Thousands of Native American children were sent far from their homes to live in these schools and learn the ways of white culture. Many struggled with loneliness and fear away from their tribal homes and familiar customs. Some lost their lives to the influenza, tuberculosis, and measles outbreaks that spread quickly through the schools. Others thrived despite the hardships, formed lifelong friendships, and preserved their Indian identities. Through photographs, letters, reports, interviews, and other primary documents, students explore the forced acculturation of American Indians through government-run boarding schools. Objectives While completing this unit, students will:

Boarding Schools While social and emotional growth are inherent components of the traditional school environment, there is no structured emotional growth component. Students are assigned advisors who offer support and guidance, however they do not serve as counselors. Traditional boarding schools cater to adolescents who already possess a strong sense of purpose and self, and work with them to further develop a student's intellect, curiosity, excellence, and creativity. They are not appropriate for students struggling with issues of self-worth, self-discipline, and/or inadequate problem solving and decision-making skills and abilities.

Teen Boarding Schools Parents who are struggling with a troubled pre adolescent or teenaged child often feel as if there is no place to turn. They try a number of interventions to turn their child's problem behavior around, yet still find the solutions fall short of the mark. Modern culture makes it difficult for young people to make the transition from childhood to adulthood. Rites of passage that once helped teenagers understand the growing responsibilities that come with age no longer play a major part in our fast-paced, chaotic society. Oftentimes children get their messages from inappropriate sources, whether this be an individual peer group or the larger peer culture. Teenagers who are troubled are often confused and frightened. The defiance, anger, and rebelliousness reflect their confusion and fear. The first step in saving a child from a self-destructive path of academic failure, dangerous drug and alcohol experimentation, and even brushes with police is to realize you need professional help. Where can parents turn when they have tried therapists, school counselors, and spiritual advisors, yet their child is still clearly in trouble?

Therapeutic Boarding Schools As with traditional boarding school programs, students are expected to adhere to school rules and policies, and to make a personal commitment to contribute positively to campus life. Emotional growth students, however, receive daily affirmation that their contributions are valued, and that they themselves are valued members of the community. Students receive continuous support through experiential learning exercises which help develop a more positive sense of self, and improve decision making, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. Emotional growth programs operate on a rolling admissions schedule, accepting students year-round as required. Applicants are routinely required to undergo a series of psychological tests to determine appropriateness and subsequent needs, accompanied by an in depth interview process where students gain a clearer understanding of the commitment necessary for their new placement. While students are expected to be capable of performing scholastically, poor past performance does not serve as grounds for rejection. Emotional growth programs are offered in a wide range of approaches and models. When selecting a placement, it is important to ensure the child's needs are compatible with the program format. Whether clinically or experientially based, emotional growth programs provide non-traditional students with a choice and opportunity to improve their lives and their promise for the future.
