Bobsled Start Simulator helps U.S. Olympic Team bring home the gold Jack Raplee ASME NEWS W ith the assistance of a Bobsled Start Simulator designed by a team that included five ASME members, U.S. Olympians ended a 46-year medal drought in bobsled competition. When the members' role in the design of the simulator was covered last month in ASME NEWS, the result of the Simulator's role in sled design and athlete preparation was unknown. Now that Olympic medals for the 2002 Games have been awarded, some credit for ending the medal drought for U.S. bobsledders can be given to the simulator designers, known long before the Olympics officially began as the Gold Team. The Gold Medal went to the female team, the first women's bobsled competition in Olympic history. The male team won the Silver Medal. Members of both medal-winning teams used the simulator in training. Vonetta Flowers, who also used the simulator, was a member of the Gold Medal-winning two-woman bobsled team. Flowers also became the first African-American athlete to win a Gold Medal at the Winter Games.

Many of the cities that spent millions to build the twisted tracks for previous Winter Olympics are happy to sell you a ride. Every host city since 1980 has had to build a brand new track. The bill for Nagano's Spiral track ran to $79 million, and it could cost as much as $2.5 million annually just to keep it from becoming a total writeoff. Since it's hard to fill a high school stadium with bobsled fans, it's unlikely they'll bring in that kind of cash hosting future competitions. To help pay the bills, and to keep themselves on the bobsledding and luge maps after the Olympics end, a number of past Olympic sites sell rides. Even the course that will be used for the Salt Lake City games in 2002 has started public rides to help defray costs years before the Games begin. Tracking History Not all Olympic tracks have survived. Since bobsledding is not a popular sport in Scandinavia, the committee planning the 1952 Games in Oslo decided they didn't want to inflict a huge concrete eyesore on the city for decades after the games left. So the Norwegians carved a channel from ice that melted away.

In Germany the sport is known as rodel, and it is in the alpine countries of Europe that the sport began. The first international luge race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors representing seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss resort of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer (2.5 mile) road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. At the turn of the century, luge was actually governed by the International Bobsled Federation, which administered all ice-track sports.
