John Gichigi/Allsport HISTORY Sleds have been used for centuries as a way to travel on snow, but bobsledding didn't emerge as a sport until the late 19th century, when the Swiss attached a steering mechanism to a toboggan. Bobsled races take place on many natural ice courses throughout Europe. The Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT) is founded. The four-man race takes place at the first ever Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France. At the Games in St. Mortiz, Switzerland, five men compete on each four-man team for the only time in Olympic history. The two-man event is added at the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. American Eddie Eagen becomes the only person to win a gold medal in both the Winter and Summer Olympics (four-man bobsled, light heavyweight boxing). An important rule change limits the total weight of crew and sled, ending the era of the heavyweight bobsledder. The rule helps make the sport a highly athletic event. Early 1990s: Women's bobsledding debuts at events in Europe and North America.

Canada dead-heated with Italy for the two-man gold in Nagano, and US driver Todd Hays led this winter's World Cup before leaving to train for the Games. On the women's side, the Germans have crowded out the Swiss and Americans and could go 1-2 in Salt Lake. US outlook: If he can replace drug-banned pusher Pavle Jovanovic, Hays should break a medal drought that goes back to 1956 - and he could do it in both events. Jean Racine figures to win the women's bronze, but could upgrade if she and controversial new brakeman Gea Johnson click. US roster Men Todd Hays, Del Rio, Texas Garrett Hines, Atlanta Randy Jones, Winston-Salem, N.C. Mike Kohn, Chantilly, Va.

Bob Haskell WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Feb. 20, 2002) A soft-spoken National Guard soldier steered her two-woman bobsled to a gold medal Feb. 19 by winning the first women's bobsled competition ever featured in the Olympic Games. Spc. Jill Bakken, 25, of the Utah Army National Guard and a member of the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program, drove herself and civilian brakeman Vonetta Flowers from Alabama into the pages of Olympic history. The unheralded duo's two-run total time in their bobsled USA 2 of 1 minute, 37.76 seconds, at the Utah Olympic Park, easily beat the two German teams that walked away with the silver and bronze medals. The better-known American team of driver Jean Racine and brakeman Gea Johnson, in USA 1, finished fifth. Johnson was hobbled by an injured left hamstring and could not push that sled as hard and as fast as she needed to for that team to gain the gold or any other Olympic honors.

Flowers' Gold Was One For The History Books
By EDDIE PELLS
The Associated Press
Published: Feb 25, 2002
SALT LAKE CITY -
Vonetta Flowers woke up famous last Wednesday. She never really went to sleep the night before. Flowers and Jill Bakken won gold in the first-ever women's Olympic bobsled races Tuesday night, and made history in too many ways to count. They shocked the experts. They won America's first bobsledding medal in 46 years. They proved that these Winter Olympics, always pitched as a tribute to the purity of sport, truly do have a distinctly democratic tilt to them. Anyone can win a medal - track stars or snowbirds, Alaskans or Alabamians, and now, most notably, Anglos or African-Americans. Flowers, a long-jumper whose Summer Olympic dreams were dashed two years ago, turned to the mountain to find her gold, and became the first black athlete to win a medal in the Winter Games. She and Bakken rode the bobsled faster than the vaunted Germans, and faster than the mega-hyped, mega-exposed USA-1 team led by Jean Racine.

Skeleton History
The women skeleton athletes have been training and racing in Lake Placid since 1987. Participation in World Cup competition did not commence until the early 1990’s. The first women’s World Championship will be held in conjunction with the men’s in February, 2000 at Igls, Austria. Currently, the women are not in a position to medal in 2002. There are only six competitive athletes in international competition, however, the USBSF has identified one promising Podium prospect. Additionally, Cathy Turner, Double Gold medallist in Speed Skating, trained for skeleton in 1997 at Lake Placid and advanced rapidly. Cathy has expressed interest in training for 2002 pending a final decision regarding the sport’s inclusion. Therefore, the USBSF will:
a) continue to recruit potential world class athletes to the program and b) work through the Core Program to develop the identified athlete and new recruits. The USBSF will request Podium grants for women’s skeleton when those projects will likely produce an Olympic medallist.

For the first time ever, the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships head to the two-time Olympic village of Lake Placid, N.Y., just as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City conclude. But even though the Olympic Center has not hosted this championship before, it is no stranger to hosting elite skating events. In fact, in the past six months the facility has seen some of the top skating stars in the world. The Venues A great place to start your Lake Placid visit, the museum gives a brief, yet informative taste of the Olympic history that encompasses Lake Placid. The museum also offers guided tours of the Olympic Center, providing a behind-the-scenes look at its history and on-going importance as a training and competition site. While figure skating is different from speed skating, the Olympic Speed Skating Oval welcomes people of all levels to give it a try. Situated in front of the Lake Placid High School, the Oval is open for public skating throughout the winter. Skating at night under the lights or during the day - on the same track where Eric Heiden made history winning five gold medals in the 1980 Games - should not be missed. A mere nine miles away in Wilmington, N.Y., Whiteface Mountain is a great escape. With the greatest vertical drop in the east, (3,430 ft.) skiers and riders come from miles around to the Olympic Mountain that also hosted the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games. The famed Kids Kampus, which was rated top ten in the country by CHILD magazine, offers a fun and easy learn-to-ski program for kids. The Whiteface Mountain Ski and Snowboard School has rentals and lesson programs for all levels -never-evers all the way up to experts. Bobsledding
The bobsled was developed in Switzerland in 1897 when a group of vacationers put runners on a toboggan to get greater speed down the famous Cresta Run at St. Moritz. The sport of racing bobsleds down the mountain quickly became popular among British and American visitors. The first sleds were made of wood but were soon replaced by steel sleds, which were much faster. A part of the Winter Olympic games since their inception in 1924, bobsledding is a sport of exhilarating but dangerous speed.

Competition
The first organized competition in the sport was held on the Cresta Run on January 5, 1898, with five-passenger sleds with two of the passengers being women. For better steering, they were equipped with four runners, positioned on axles much like the four wheels of a car. With the new design, speeds on the mountainside became dangerously fast, so an artificial bobsled run with a gentler slope was built at St. Moritz in 1902.
