The WORD On the ’99 Games Sunday, July 4, 1999 A Publication of the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games Recovering from Mitch Precious medals back around her neck Only two walls of her house were left standing. She and her family were living in the streets. Yet every day Milagro De Rojas Perez was at the stream near their home, sifting through the mud. She was looking for her 40 Special Olympics medals. The medals were lost after Hurricane Mitch tore through Honduras last October, destroying much of what was in its path. After losing her prized possessions, Milagro "didn’t have the smile she used to," said her 13-year-old sister, Flor, who helped to look for the medals. After the loss Milagro would shut herself away and cry. Milagro never found those medals. However, with the help of her sister, she does have her gold and two bronze medals from her first World Games, the ’91 Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Flor had met Gwin Creagan, wife of U.S. Ambassador to Honduras James Creagan, at a Special Olympics reunion in Honduras. Gwin Creagan told Flor to call her if she ever needed anything. This was that time. Gwin Creagan relayed the story told by Flor to Eunice Shriver, who arranged to replace Milagro’s three medals from her first World Games. Ambassador Creagan formally presented Milagro with the medals in the same order in which she received them at the ’91 Games, where she won the medals in the relay and 100-meter events. Shriver later came to the Honduras to meet with the Rojas Perez family. She told Flor that Milagro "is a special human being."

Nathaniel Morton Physical Education Curriculum
Back to Curriculum Intro Page General Scope of Study: The Physical Education program at Nathaniel Morton Elementary School basically follows the curriculum established for the Plymouth School System. All areas involving team sports, individual sports, movement education, and physical fitness are addressed. The program here at the Morton is designed to challenge the spectrum of students from the highly physically motivated to the less physically motivated and those that fall somewhere in-between. To establish and promote a positive environment, students are expected to put forth a reasonable effort in all classes along with displaying proper conduct and sportsmanship at all times. Self-improvement is the primary goal of the program. The physical education program in grades 1-5 is a spiraling one. All grades are exposed to team sports such as soccer, flag football, basketball, floor-hockey, softball, whiffleball, kickball, and volleyball. We follow a seasonably appropriate progression. We also concentrate on individualized and dual sports and activities such as bowling, physical fitness, jogging, frisbee/ball throwing and catching, tumbling, gymnastics, rope climbing, horseshoes, bocce and croquet. At the primary grades, skill development is stressed in all classes. Time is spent working on and improving the basic skills involved in any particular class lesson. Appropriate lead-up games and activities for each grade level are also employed. Gross-motor activities such as running, jumping, skipping, hopping, etc. are emphasized. Movement education along with body coordination and control, make up a large portion of our program at this level.

Training and Competition Training is essential to achieving the mission of Special Olympics. A common misconception is that Special Olympics consist of one or two events per year. False! Special Olympics is a year-round program offering training and athletic competition to its participants. Special Olympics Maine (SOME) athletes train for weeks with certified coaches to gain and master the skills required for a certain sport. All athletes must train a minimum of 8 weeks prior to a state competition. Training usually consist of between two to six hours of practice per week and includes warm ups, and stretching, a review of previously learned skills, instruction in new skills, game concepts, and conditioning. The instruction offered is designed to match each individual's skill level and athlete's abilities are continuously evaluated. Coaching Coaches play a unique and indispensable role in Special Olympics. They provide the sport skills and spirit that define the true athlete. In addition, coaches are role models and character builders. Coaches give Special Olympics athletes the most immediate awareness of their own worth, ability, courage, and capacity to grow and improve. The key to improving athletic performance and well being is based on the quality of training and experiences provided by the Special Olympics coaches. The SOME Coach Education Program offers a series of coaches trainings and seminars to assist the Special Olympics coach in gaining the skills to provide quality coaching to their athletes. Included in the Coach Education Program are a general orientation into Special Olympics, sports specified courses, and general coaches such as Principles of Coaching and Coaching the Special Olympics Athletes.

Program Choices for Athletes Motor Activities Training Program

Emphasizing training and participation rather than competition, the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) was developed to provide a sports experience for those with severe and profound disabilities. It is part of the commitment by Special Olympics to offer sports training to eligible athletes of all ability levels. Sports Skills Competition
Individual Sports Skills allows Special Olympics athletes to develop sports skills in a competitive format. This program is designed to serve as a stepping stone for athletes to become a member of a team as they master skills and learn team concepts.
For example, an athlete competing in Basketball Individual Skills would complete a series of three events including shooting, passing and dribbling.
Sports Skills Competition is offered in:
basketball

football (soccer)

golf

floor hockey
... volleyball To learn more about sports skills competitions, visit the Sports section at the Special Olympics Web site. Special Olympics athletes competing in Individual Sports learn fundamental skills by competing with others in non-team sports.

Boccia
Boccia is a competitive game that can be played one-on-one, in pairs, or with teams of three. It is played on a specially marked court, usually with a hard surface. The goal of the game is for players/teams to throw/bowl game balls so that they get them as close as possible to a special target ball. The game begins with a player throwing the white target ball onto the court. Opponents then take turns trying to throw/bowl their game balls as close as possible to the target ball. When the game balls have all been thrown, a referee determines the points awarded to individual or teams based on measurement of how near the game balls are to the target ball.
Boccia is an official sport of the United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association (USCPAA), the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA), and Special Olympics International (SOI). (see links below) There are two modified versions of boccia that are commonly played: Precision boccia and Special Olympic Boccia.
BENEFITS OF PLAYING BOCCIA
Boccia is an activity that can be enjoyed by persons of all ages and persons with a wide variety of disabilities. It can be played for recreation, as a competitive sport, or for physical education in school programs. The game requires planning and strategy in trying to place playing balls for maximum scoring. It also can develop or increase hand-eye coordination. Finally, boccia is an activity in which individuals with severe disabilities can participate and develop a high level of skill. The game can be easily adapted to allow players with functional limitations to use chutes and ramps in order to to place their game balls into play.
