Demand for fixed-income paper is set to rise
How do you see the environment for bonds?

There are strategic factors as well. Governments are falling over each other to become smaller, meaning you don't have as much state spending, so the supply of debt is going down. Conversely, the demand for debt is going to start increasing in the West particularly because of pension schemes. Older populations are very fixed-income oriented. If you are 65, you want more bonds in your portfolio than stocks. As populations in Japan, Western Europe and the U.S. get older, that is bullish for debt instruments.
There is another point, which is very bullish for debt. One of the things that people have missed about the Internet is actually that it is stunningly deflationary. Fifteen years ago, in U.S. Treasuries, the bid-offer pricing spread was about 20 cents. Now, because prices are fully available to everyone, the bid-offer spread is basically zero [as the inefficiencies are priced out]. Now you have Internet search engines that will search various sites and find the cheapest book for you. Now you can buy goods globally. That's massively deflationary and that's very good for bonds [because, unlike inflation, deflation adds to the real interest paid to bondholders].

As cyberinvesting moves into the mainstream, individuals are demanding a broaderrange of services, including the ability to shop for bonds online.
http://investing.wsj.com/bonds-body4.html
Buying Bonds Online Several years into the boom in online trading, which took root in the stock market in the mid-1990s, electronic trading had yet to make any significant penetration in the bond market, accounting for less than 5% of the overall trading volume. Many online brokers purport to offer bond trading, but investors will be disappointed if they expect to see systems that mirror electronic stock trading, where orders to buy and sell are fully automated and don't require human intervention. See a sampling of Bond Tools from SmartMoney.com For the majority of firms, bond trading is done the old-fashioned way. Although a customer can get some information online, he or she must phone in buy and sell orders to a representative, who then tries to fill the request from the firm's own inventory or by calling around. And service is usually limited to actively traded Treasury bonds or exchange-listed corporate bonds. For others, online bond trading is no more than an e-mail service. Yes, customers can place an order electronically, but then the bond market's low-tech roots become apparent, as a broker takes over and tries to fill the order just as if it had been phoned in. Only a handful of brokers offer any sort of automatic order execution to individual investors, and that service is still extremely limited. Electronic bond trading has been slow to reach the level of online stock investing, partially because it wasn't a high priority for either investors or brokers.

Shopping for Bonds Online
Mention online investing and most people think stocks. But interest in Internet bond-trading is growing, and firms are moving to catch up.
FOR INDIVIDUAL INVESTORS who want to buy and sell bonds online, there still aren't that many choices for making actual trades and getting helpful information. Punch "stock investing" into an Internet search engine like Yahoo! and you're likely to be overwhelmed by the response. But type the words "bond investing" and you'll be lucky to find a handful of worthwhile Web pages. Many bond sites on the Internet are geared toward institutional investors and professional brokers. They either restrict access to their powerful research and information and other analytical tools to licensed professionals, or, in most cases, those tools are simply too expensive for individuals. Many sites that allow electronic bond trading over the Internet (or through proprietary dial-up networks) require hefty minimum transactions, which many individuals won't be able to afford. However, some sites are useful and accessible to individual investors. Some are hosted by brokerage firms, while others are watered-down versions of sites run for professional bond traders by commercial data vendors. These sites allow individuals access to information on bonds that only recently was available to just professionals, including delayed and real-time quotes from some dealers. Some are even paving the way for retail investors to execute transactions with the click of their computer mouse.

Equity Investing
As the word equity implies, when investors buy equity (also called stock) of a company, investors have ownership in the company, actually becoming an owner in that company. How can Investors Make Money with Stocks? As an owner/stockholder, investors of course will hope that the company will do well, so that, they can enjoy a profit from its success. Depending on the type of stock they own, investors may also earn regular income from dividend payments. Furthermore, investor may earn profit from the increase of the stock's price. However, investors should bear in mind that stocks can decrease in value, too, for a number of reasons. What Factors may Affect Stock Prices? If the company does well, or even if the market simply predicts the company to do well, more investors may buy the stocks, causing the stock price to rise. On the other hand, if the company does poorly - or the market predicts it to - shareholders may sell their stocks, causing the price to drop. Besides, stock value may also be influenced by trends in the overall stock market, in a particular industry - none of which investors can control. Intangible factors such as consumers' attitude toward the company or its products as well as investors' attitude about the market and investing in general may also affect stock price. Risks Associated with Stocks No one can predict which companies will do well over time, which is why stocks are the most unpredictable of the major asset classes. This means they can be volatile - while their prices can go up, they can go down without warning. For investors who can sit tight through market swings and have a long-term perspective of 10 years or more, however, short-term volatility is usually not cause for concern.
