http://www.kidstock.com/en/0302.asp
When it comes to your children, you want to give them everything. The most valuable gift you can provide is a college education. On average, college graduates earn over 80% more than individuals with only a high school diploma - a difference of $1,000,000 over the course of a lifetime (source: collegeboard.com). The bad news is that the cost of a college education can be staggering. In 2002 the average cost of a four-year education at a public college was $39,745. For private college, the bill was nearly triple that). And, since 1993, expenses have risen by nearly 6% a year (currently, that's twice the rate of inflation!). If this trend continues, many new parents may be surprised to learn what those costs will look like by the time their children are college bound. In 2020, a four-year education would be nearly $115,000, while the tab for a private college would come to almost $300,000. While the numbers look daunting, they aren't unattainable. And the sooner you start planning, the better. Even if you can't afford to invest a lot, two important keys to success are starting early and investing regularly.

Types of Bonds
Bonds range in risk from relatively safe Treasury bills to extremely risky junk bonds. You should match your investment with your tolerance for risk. Below are some of the many types of bonds.
  • U.S. Treasuries. These bonds are backed by the federal government and are exempt from state and local taxes. There are several types of Treasuries:
Treasury bills are a short term investment. They mature in 13 weeks, 26 weeks, or one year. T-bills cost at least $10,000.
Treasury notes mature in two to ten years and pay interest twice a year. The minimum investment is between $1000 and $5000.
Treasury bonds mature in 10 to 30 years and pay interest semiannually. You can buy a Treasury bond for $1000.
    Zero-coupon Treasuries.

    Choose an area of interest:
What You Should Know About Investing in Bonds
March 2002 With many investors disenchanted or outright frightened by stock market returns since early 2000, bonds are back in vogue. Yet many investors don't understand the basics, let alone the subtleties, of bonds. For example, a recent survey by American Century Investments found that only 1 in 200 could answer correctly all ten basic questions about bonds.
Bonds are loans to private companies or federal, state or local governments with the promise though not always the guarantee that the borrower will pay back the principal along with interest by a certain time, called the maturity date or term. The interest rate is set and is usually paid at regular intervals, such as quarterly, which is why bonds are called "fixed-income securities." However, some types of bonds don't pay the interest until the bond matures. Generally, the longer the term of the bond, the higher its interest rate. Municipal bonds, on the other hand, offer lower interest rates compared with similar corporate or U.S. Treasury bonds because bondholders don't pay federal tax on the earnings.
