Introduction
For centuries, people in the West have marveled at the delicate beauty produced by Oriental artists and sculptors. From gardening to tattooing to dance and martial arts, these craftsmen have enthralled us with complex forms and simplistic perfection. One of the most fascinating of the visual techniques to emerge from this highly cultured region is the Oriental art of miniature sculpture. Who has not been stricken with the expressive grace of Japanese Bonsai? Though once the sole province of Bonsai masters within Japan, Bonsai plants have been available to fortunate consumers throughout the world for some time. With this in mind, we are proud to now offer to you the animal complement of this art form; the Bonsai Kitten.

Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in decorative pots. Bonsai can live for more than 100 years, and are passed down from generation to generation. For indoor bonsai trees, select tropical plants that are suitable for indoor cultivation.
Brush cherry ( Syzygium paniculatum ) is often used for indoor bonsai plants. The new foliage is bright green, maturing to a rich green or sometimes copper. It produces small white flowers in the summer and berries in the fall. Brush cherry requires bright light. Sheflera, too, make worthy indoor bonsai ( figure A ), and like lots of light but make sure it's indirect.
To keep bonsai plants small, gardeners prune as needed and keep their trees pot-bound and growing in soil mixes that are relatively low in organic matter. The soil mix should be a blend of peat moss, perlite and limestone with a small amount of slow-release fertilizer and a handful of water-holding polymer crystals. Crush the crystals before adding them to the soil mix so the particles will be very small. Bonsai plants need constant monitoring for moisture and may need to be watered daily. Choose a decorative shallow pot for displaying bonsai plants ( figure B ). Make sure that it has drainage holes and a matching saucer to catch water. Cover the drain holes with a piece of plastic window screen, then place a small amount of the soil mix in the bottom of the pot. Make sure that the tree is well watered before you begin the transplanting process.

BP40x Tiny Leafed Chinese Elm
Obtained from China on one our earlier trips in the 80's. Original plant was found in nature, but was artistically designed from the start of its life by Mother Nature and then a skilled Bonsai Master. As these types of Bonsai are truly difficult to estimate age....we place this beauty at possibly 40 to 50 years old. A Masterpiece. 26" above pot: 27" face: 30" depth: 4" + trunk. A Masterpiece.

BP17x - Trident Maple
This Masterpiece was found in Los Angeles in 1968 in a Bonsai Master's collection. We begged, cajoled and everything else.....but did finally receive the Master's approval to receive it and nurture it. This specimen does not have the huge trunks that we used to obtain from China, but then it doesn't look like a large russet potato either. Its elegantly twiggy growth is reminiscent of the many, many maples we see every year in Japan (but because of our USDA prohibition of imports on them can only look at and wish for). Estimated age is 40 to 50 years. A Masterpiece. 23" above pot: 25" face: 22" depth: 1 1/2" trunk.

3813 - Caring for Bonsai Plants
Bonsai plants have become very popular to purchase for oneself or to give as gifts. Unfortunately many die due to improper care. Primary to determining how to care for your bonsai plant is to first determine whether your plant is a tropical or subtropical indoor plant or a hardy, outdoor one. Plants, such as, maples, pines, junipers and boxwoods are outdoor hardy plants and their care differs from indoor tropical plants such as weeping fig, dwarf pomegranate, natal plum, rosemary and Serissa. Indoor plants are best grown indoors as house plants but may be set out of doors for the summer as you would other indoor plants. Hardy, outdoor plants on the other hand, require outdoor growing conditions for best growth. They should be brought indoors for only short periods of time for display and then returned to their outdoor growing area. Trying to grow a hardy, outdoor bonsai plant indoors will most likely result in failure unless you are able to replicate outdoor conditions. Whether you are growing indoor or outdoor plants, proper light is very important. Most outdoor plants require good light. Full morning sun and some afternoon shade is ideal for most plants but pines and junipers can tolerate full sun all day. Indoor bonsai plants should also receive good light. Most will require a south or east facing window. A good indoor plant book can provide you with light requirements for various indoor plants.

10. A Detailed History Of Bonsai...
The Japanese tend to focus on using native species for their bonsai namelypines, azaleas and maples (regarded as the traditional bonsai plants).
http://www.bonsaisite.com/history1.html
A Detailed History of Bonsai... Bonsai first appeared in China over a thousand years ago on a very basic scale, known as pun-sai , where it was the practice of growing single specimen trees in pots. These early specimens displayed sparse foliage and rugged, gnarled trunks which often looked like animals, dragons and birds. There are a great number of myths and legends surrounding Chinese bonsai, and the grotesque or animal-like trunks and root formations are still highly prized today. Chinese bonsai come from the landscape of the imagination and images of fiery dragons and coiled serpents take far greater precedence over images of trees- so the two forms of this art are quite far apart. With Japan's adoption of many cultural trademarks of China - bonsai was also taken up, introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333) by means of Zen Buddhism - which at this time was rapidly spreading around Asia. The exact time is debatable, although it is possible that it had arrived in AD 1195 as there appears to be a reference to it in a Japanese scroll attributed to that period. Once bonsai was introduced into Japan, the art was refined to an extent not yet approached in China. Over time, the simple trees were not just confined to the Buddhist monks and their monasteries, but also later were introduced to be representative of the aristocracy - a symbol of prestige and honour. The ideals and philosophy of bonsai were greatly changed over the years. For the Japanese, bonsai represents a fusion of strong ancient beliefs with the Eastern philosophies of the harmony between man, the soul and nature.

Larz Anderson Bonsai
Introduction Beginnings Japanese Connection The Bonsai Hinoki Cypress Care Bibliography
The Japanese Connection
Larz Anderson's interest in things Japanese predated his assignment in 1912 as ambassador to that country. In 1907, he built a Japanese garden at Weld, and before that, in 1889, he brought two dwarf maples back from his first trip to Japan. But it was in 1913 that he became enchanted with bonsai. His journal entry for February 1, 1913, shows this clearly: About us were dwarf trees of fantastic shape and stunted plum in fragrant bloom, white and pink, and gnarled trees hundreds of years old with branches blossoming out of seemingly dead trunks in pots of beautiful form and color. Isabel and I stopped so long in this little fairy place that we had to drive like the dickens through the congested streets of endless villages to Yokohama, which we reached without disaster in a little over an hour, in time for one o'clock luncheon. Anderson must have made a major purchase from the Yokohama Nursery Company shortly after this experience, since he returned to the United States a little more than a month later, bringing with him at least 40 bonsai plants. This marked the beginning of Anderson's serious commitment to Japanese horticulture. The plants themselves were expensive to import but also, once in the United States, gardeners knowledgeable in the techniques of bonsai were required to maintain them. That knowledge did not exist among Americans of the time, so Anderson was forced to hire a succession of Japanese gardeners. The most famous of them was Rainosuke Awano, who maintained the collection while studying for his doctorate in philosophy at Columbia University.
