GEOGRAPHY Geographically, Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the heart of South-Eastern Europe, bordering on Croatia in the North, South and West, and Montenegro and Serbia to the East. It covers an area of 51,197 sq. km, with a coastline of 24.5 kilometer extending along the Adriatic sea. Together with some other South Slavic lands, Bosnia was first represented on the geographical maps made by the ancient Greeks. This is the case with other ancient maps such as ‘Tabula Europe’ by Claudius Ptolemaus. In the first century of the new era there appeared the first maps of Roman provinces, including the above mentioned territories, prepared by Roman cartographers. They were incomplete and not very accurate. These geographical maps feature the Sava, Kupa, Una, Vrbas, Drina and Neretva rivers. In the mediaeval period, advances in map-making were achieved by some Arab cartographers, such as al-Idrisi for example, from the year 1154. The maps of this period contained new elements including some Balkan countries as well as Bosnia itself. During the periods of Byzantine and Hungarian supremacy in this part of South East Europe, the Bosnian borders were also shown, albeit within larger territorial units.

Postage Stamps of Bosnia and Herzegovina The Story This page is not an official page of the JP PTT BiH ( National Postal Office of Bosnia and Hercegovina). This page is made to give some, not all information, about postage stamps issued in Bosnia, I have in my possession. Note: I am not philatelist, this is all Greek for me. Because the stamp collecting , or philately, is one of the most popular hobbies in the world there is natural interest to collect stamps from Bosnia. Collecting of postage stamps is also known as philately (according to one source it is coined Greek word meaning, literally, "love of what is free of further tax"). I have received e-mail messages from collectors from all round the world because on one home page I have made were some (bad) pictures of four postage stamps from Bosnia. The purpose of this was only to illustrate the page and because the stamps were designed by world famous design team TRIO from Sarajevo. First postage stamps in Bosnia were issued during the Austrian-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. More information can be find in catalogues or more specialized literature. During the Congress of Berlin in 1878, monarchy of Austria-Hungary have got administration rights over the country, and by 1908 had annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina. Until that the country was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. In June 1914 the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo, an act that precipitated World War I.

It is bordered by Croatia to the north and west and Serbia and Montenegro to the east. A twenty-kilometer stretch of coastline in the south of the country gives it access to the Adriatic Sea. Much of BiH is mountainous, with the Dinaric Alps running along the western border. The central and northwestern parts of the country are heavily forested. Herzegovina in the south is more Mediterranean in character. General Framework Agreement for Peace (the Dayton-Paris Accords) in December. Present-day BiH is home to approximately four million people. Pre-war statistics showed 44 per cent of the population to be Bosniac, 31 per cent Serb and 17 per cent Croat. The population is similarly split along religious lines: Bosniacs are Muslim, Serbs are Orthodox Christian, and Croats are Roman Catholic. The remainder of the population is made up of some seventeen "national" minority groups, the largest of which is the Roma. Political and Administrative Structure The State of Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into two Entities: the Republika Srpksa, which takes up 49 per cent of the territory and forms a crescent shape around the north and east, and the Federation, which forms 51 per cent of the territory.
