Lonely Planet Lonely Planet guide to Botswana and the world Order Now
Botswana Culture Botswana's early tribal religions were primarily cults in which ancestors directed family matters from their underworld domain and were contactable only through the heads of family groups. Religious rites included male and female initiation ceremonies and rain-making rituals. Polygamy was practised, and a man's estate was inherited by the children of his head wife. San folklore is rich with supernatural explanations of natural events, orchestrated by N!odima, the good guy, and Gcawama, the mischievous trickster. Missionaries dislodged nearly all the traditional practices, and Christianity is currently the prevailing belief system in Botswana. English is the official language of Botswana, but the most common language is Setswana, a Bantu language understood by over 90% of the population. The original Botswana artists were everyday craftspeople who injected individual aesthetics into utilitarian implements such as pottery, fabrics and tools. Botswana's baskets are exquisite, employing designs with such evocative names as Tears of the Giraffe, Urine Trail of the Bull and Forehead of the Zebra. Because indigenous languages have only been written since the coming of the Christian missionaries, Botswana doesn't have much of a literary tradition. All that survives of the ancient myths and praise poetry of the native peoples has been handed down orally and only recently transcribed. Botswana's most famous modern literary figure was South African-born Bessie Head, who settled in Serowe and wrote of the harshness and beauty of village life.

THE WORLD CULTURE JOURNAL published by WebdaK Communications "A dying Culture - the last bushmen of Botswana are resettled" - 2002.05.30 by WB For 30,000 years, bushmen lived in the Kalahari desert in today's Botswana - but now, after a 17-year struggle, the last of them will be forced out of their ancestral land by their own government. We all witness the death of another traditional culture - unneccessary as many others, but even more tragical, because the "San people"'s culture survived longer than any other on earth. They are forced out of their ancestral land, because of the greed for diamonds - a reason for Botswana's relative wealth.
"This is the final chapter in a 17-year saga which has seen the relocation of some 2,200 San out of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) into resettlement camps by the Botswana Government." writes BBC News-AFRICA
In 1961, Botswana created Central Kalahari Game Reserve - or CKGR - measuring ,52 000 square kilometres, especially for the San ...to provide refuge and the wildlife on which they depend as hunter-gatherers - a haven where they could continue their lifestyle and develop at their own pace." There was varius resistance movements during the long struggle, but one of the last resources they have is a lawsuit the San filed with the help of South African lawyers. It is an uphill battle: as long as the government insists, that the resettlement is "for their own good", Botswana's leaders will not realize, that this neo-colonialistic argument destroyed the homeland of too many original cultures, including Native Americans.

The Bushmen of Botswana have been encouraged by the goverment to leave their ancestral land to have access to the advantages provided by civilization. The problem is that Bushmen don't want to be civilized. Perhaps the name Botswana will not sound familiar to most people, thus some background is pertinent: Botswana is an African country landlocked by its neighbours (Namibia to the North and West, troubled Zimbabwe to the East and mighty South Africa to the South), it achieved independence from the UK in the 60s and since then it has prospered enourmously thanks to relative good governance (did you ever hear about Botswana in the news? No, that is a sure sign things are going well there) and the richness of its soil. Botswana provides around one quarter of the global production of diamonds , this has brought realtive prosperity to its people. Unfortunately Botswana, as most sub Saharan countries, is affected by the AIDS epidemic (the life expectancy is of 37 years). The local goverment, guided most probably by good intentions, has relocated the Bushmen, concentrating them in a community in which they have water, school, a clinic and some work.

Useful information

No accurate records exist of the first ever inhabitants of Botswana, although tool fragments and other evidence of human activity have been uncovered which are thought to be around 27,000 years old. The Basarwa, also known as San Bushmen, were among the first recognised people to inhabit the country although only 40,000 remain today.
The 17th Century brought the Tswana, or Batswana from the South, a Bantu people related to the Sotho of Transvaal and Lesotho. The Tswana now make up over 50% of Botswana's population and the remaining peoples have been heavily absorbed into this culture. This may be one of the main reasons for Botswana's cultural and social stability over the last two centuries.
As well as the San, minority tribes include the 25,000 Mbanderu, cousins of the Namibian Herero tribe who fled Namibia following the German conquest in the 1890's. The striking traditional costume of these people with large flowing skirts and elaborate headdresses is based on that of the 19th century missionaries wives.

The one very unique fact about India is its "Unity in Diversity". The diversity of India starts from it's land which is made up of snowbound peaks of beautiful cool hills, fertile river valleys, tropical rainforests , blistering hot deserts and breathtakingly beautiful coasts. This diversity is not only limited to the land but extends to the religion, languages and lifestyle. Hence, each diverse geographical region generates a startlingly different culture, language and lifestyle. Adding to this is the culture the immigrants have brought with them. Moreover, the culture of India is rich and diverse. All these blend together to make up a multi-faceted and uniquely Indian Culture which binds the country together in perfect harmony Political Structure Of India India chose to remain within the British Commonwealth of Nations. It adopted The British system of Parliamentary Democracy retaining the judicial, administrative and educational system of the British. India is the largest and most populous democracy on the earth. The Indian Constitution, drafted by Dr.B.R.Ambedkar was adopted when India became a Republic on 26 January 1950. The constitution safeguards all the citizens from racial, religious, creed based or sexual discrimination. It guarentees freedom of speech, expression, belief or occupation.
